i think the Wii is going to incorporate hands in a movement sense, e.g. if the games says "left" then you move the controller to the left. But you're right; using the arrows on a computer blows.

While in theory Wii DDR using the wiimote/nunchuck would be good, they'd need to make a new nunchuck. It would be silly to only use the wiimote, and the nunchuck chord is significantly less than an average person's arm span. The length doesn't normally matter, but when you're already moving your legs, chances are the arm motions would become larger and stuff and I could see broken cords becoming a big problem (that or just restrictive game play)

The Wii and the 360 can peacefully coexist, as they both bring something cool to the table.
My fanboy loathing of the Failstation 3, however, is great.

I agree that the idea of using both arms/hands & feet seems "interesting", but it's a very flawed concept.
1) How complex would the arrow patterns be if they applied to both arms & feet? I mean, on extreme difficulty on DDR Supernova for example, you almost need the metal dance pad, just to have the arm bar to hold onto. You're feet are moving so insanely quick, that you need to hold on with hands to prevent falling over! If you were using the wii-mote, would the dance routines be slower? or less complex?
2) How could you possibly incorporate more arrows than already exist? This screenshot isn't even remotely close to the MAX number of arrows you can have on-screen, but you get the idea:
3) You'd have to buy a Wii... and that would suck, unless you already have one. Based on personal experience, PlayStation has the best DDR games!

Well how many non-PS2 DDR game have you played? The Gamecube one is the exact same thing as any PS2 DDR game, except that it has Mario in it. And if you want to play any future DDR games, you're going to need SOME new console. I'm not sure if they have DDR on the 360, but between the Wii and PS3, I'd take the Wii.

I personally only played on PC and Gamecube, I mean aside PS2, and I very much prefer using the PS2... I suppose their might be some good DDR for the Wii if they ever release a game... I'll have to wait and check it out! In the meantime, PS2 it is.

They do have DDR on the 360 now: Dance Dance Revolution Universe. As for the upcoming DDR Hottest Party (Wii), look to the "Hands and Feet" mode introduced into home DDR with DDR EXTREME (US PS2) for an idea of how the new gameplay will work. It'll be similar to that, but with Wiimote motion sensitivity instead of the Eye-Toy camera. DDR HP is supposedly going to feature a soundtrack made up of all new songs for DDR, so the choreography WILL likely be designed in whatever way necessary to incorporate the hand motions with the traditional cardinal direction step paterns in a way that provides fun and progressive challenge without necessarily becoming physically unfeasible. Oh, and FYI, you don't ever "need" the bar to clear songs, not even the hardest ones on DDR SuperNOVA. The bar is there for safety reasons only; the arcade manuals warn operators that players should never support their body weight on them. Most people you see clinging to the bar for dear life, staring straight ahead, and flailing their legs about furiously, are just score-whores who want to get the top grades with minimal physical effort.

As for DDR Extreme having hands & feet mode, I never knew that the game itself offered hands modes, I just thought the eye toy was there as a cute accessory, so you could see yourself on camera... I really had no idea that the gameplay changed! So, it does? I'd never waste money on an eye toy, so I'll never know unless someone tells me...
Also, even if the manual warns not to do it, it also warns that you should play bare foot... which is DUMB! Your feet stick to the mat, making it more susceptible to ripping... and wearing socks makes it easier to do complicated moves! It also warns not to use the game when consuming alcohol... RIGHT! If you've ever gotten drunk, you know how much funner DDR can be!
And lastly, I'm sorry to say this, but why would anyone even get a 360? Let alone for DDR! Ick! When I feel like wasting $500, I'll take a few days vacation!

We're talking apples and oranges on the manuals. I'm talking about the operation of the arcade units. You're talking about the instruction manuals for the home versions. The "barefeet" issue I'm sure is a failsafe to makesure they can't be liable if some moron plays with shoes on, tears up the mat, and manages to electricute themselves in the process.
As for the 360, it's a great machine that's come into its own after a rocky first year. I'm enjoying mine greatly. It complements my Wii very well too. There are some terrific games on Xbox Live Arcade, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, etc. Whereas the Wii provides excelent console nostalgia with the Virtual Console, the 360 provides excellent arcade nostalgia, with online functionality too.
As for DDR on the 360, yeah, you're not missing much. Most of the problems that plagued the Xbox DDR's (the DDR Ultramix series) are back again. Design flaws with the interface are annoying, but performance issues like frame rate dropping are inexcusible on the 360.

I'm guessing that the Wii DDR will be like DDR merged with ParaParaParadise.

I've only played DDR on the PS2 and on the computer. I've really wanted to play the one on Gamecube, so I'll probably get it once I get a Wii. As for the new games, I would think that, no matter what new features they would put in, that they'd have a "classic" mode or something where you would only use the pad. It would be a good safeguard just in case the idea of adding a hand aspect doesn't work out so well.
On another anal-retentive note:
I really hate that saying about apples and oranges. People say that as if they have nothing in common, and it's sort of "racist" because the biggest difference between them is their color. Here's a list of some of the things they have in common:
- They are fruit
- They grow on trees
- They have sugar
- They have seeds
- They have peels
- They are about the same size and shape
- They are edible
- They are able to be juggled
- They are both affected by gravity (if it actually exists)
I'm going to stop there. I just really detest that phrase, so I had to open my face.
(also, this is nothing against Wolfman. It's just that phrase. I blame whoever first thought it was relevant, and it had better have been at least 6,000 years ago.)

I own Mario Dance Party. It's fun, and some of the classic game song remixes are great, but don't bother buying it!
The difficulty goes nowhere near some of the leg melting stuff that usual DDRs do, which is fine for someone like me who is not an expert at DDR but will bother a lot of other folks. The dances don't have much complexity to them (no sudden slow downs, very few sudden stops), and there are not many songs to choose from either (somewhere in the 20s I think). Also if your pad breaks down you're pretty much screwed. I think they only manufactured that pad for 6 months, so they're very difficult to find replacements for.

I don't know about replacement pads, but the game itself went back into production after a limited run because demand turned out to be greater than expected.
Also, Mad Catz makes a GCN DDR pad as well.

Mad Catz makes pretty horrible pads, though.
On the subject of "Apples and Oranges," saying their only difference is "color" is one rather shallow analysis. Apples and oranges, besides being different colors (and remember, apples come in a variety of colors themselves: red, green, yellow, mixtures of those three, etc.), have different textures, inside and out, very different tastes, different types of seeds, and different nutritional content. Apples have edible skins, but oranges have largely inedible rinds. Apple seeds also contain trace amounts of cyanide, while orange seeds don't.
I'll refrain from using the "apples and oranges" comparison for your sake, Rycona, but try not to go looking for offenses where none exist. You'll just end up upsetting yourself over trivialities.

It was mainly a joke anyway, but the context in which that phrase is usually used seems, at least to me, to point to some impossibility in the comparison of apples and oranges. I know they do indeed have their differences, but I was pointing out the similarities for semi-comedy and thoughtfulness' sake, as many people probably use that phrase without thinking about it at all. I didn't point out the differences, because it wasn't part of my argument, so just because I don't mention something doesn't mean I don't know it.
This isn't some personal attack; It was a reflective joke. I like to point out trivial things, if only to make people think a little bit, and I usually am comedic about it, but plain text is good at killing my presentation. I think you took it too seriously. Of course, the lack of much tonality when reading text can do that though, so I apologize if that is the case. I sometimes like to try to do funny little rants, and if someone doesn't put a smiley face or something in there, it can be misinterpreted.

In other news, when I do get around to DDR-ing again, I would like to get a foam RedOctane dance pad. We had a few of those at GamerzLAN and it was really nice. I'm assuming they're going to make one with connectability to the newer consoles, if they haven't already.

Ryconna, while we now know you were joking, don't forget the whole "apples and oranges" thing is used when someone is trying to compare things that seem like they should similar enough to compare (both fruit, etc.) but are too different to compare accurately. It'd be like comparing 300 to Anchorman asking which is a better movie.

While we're being anal retentive, I HATE when people say "funner", which has appeared in the thread I believe at least twice. IT'S NOT A FUCKING WORD! It actually hurts my ears when people say it because they can tell it's not a word and feel insulted.

I've been using RedOctane's pads (the ones with the thick foam inserts) for two and a half years now. It's the best you'll find if you don't want to fork out a few hundred dollars for a metal dance pad. The latest models support PSX, PS2, Xbox, and PC (via a USB adapter you can attach to the Xbox plug). Make sure you buy from a store that offers at least a one-year replacement plan. The pads don't last forever, especially if you play often on Maniac/Heavy/Expert. The down arrows are especially prone to malfunction after normal use. The good news, though, is that the RedOctane pads have come down in price. Best Buy sells them for only $59 (they used to be $99). The bad news is that I don't believe RedOctane is producing any more pads. They were acquired by Activision after they made it big producing Guitar Hero. I doubt Activision has an interest in producing hardware to support another software company's games. So, once stores sell through their current stock, that's it.

I have two Mad Catz pads. I find them to be quite responsive, although they're worn out a bit.
For example, one of them has a giant brown tape on it. I was trying a hard Heavy song when my toe got inside a small hole in the pad. You could almost see the right arrow sensor after that. On the other pad, the down arrow activated on its own all the time. It stopped for some reason and seems to work well now.
As for playing on a PC, I'm trying to find an adaptor to connect my pads, and that won't bug when pressing left and right at the same time. I have a few mario and megaman songs on my PC, and a 4 minutes long Sandstorm I really have to try.
