So we finally got around to visiting my dad. We went to drop off/pay his bills. Then went back to his house, mainly to be there if he needed anything while waiting for my grandparents from his side of the family to arrive from near Valdosta (that's roughly 20 miles away from the Georgia-Florida border). They'll be staying in a hotel nearby in case he needs anything and came with a couple pairs of shirts and pants since he's lost so much weight (and is running the risk of dehydrating). They talked for a while and got his shopping list just before leaving. I have to admit it was good seeing them as I haven't visited with them in like 6 years, even if it wasn't under the best circumstances.

Oh and in other family problems, my mom refractured her tailbone when she was slipped while mopping up her tile kitchen floor. Hopefully she'll be fine in a couple of days, but for right now I'm waiting for her friend to call me and let me know my mom's back home at her apartment.

Sorry if this came off as too lengthy or "journal-y."

It's no problem. It's nice to have people you can vent to.

oh no doubt. I feel your pain bro. I figured making a spambot joke would lighten the mood, which is most melancholy.

...Two pages, I was hoping this could go the whole thread without "crude sincerity" coming up, thank you very much random farthead (who I've always felt was just murdar using another account).

Anyway, I've been assured by my aunt Jacqueline, a medical technician for over 20 years, that he won't be losing his tongue with the treatment he's receiving at Emory (top-notch care). If anything would kill him, it'll be the chemo treatments themselves.

Whoever finds an inexpensive and effective alternative to chemotherapy will win a Nobel Prize.

It's good to hear he and his tongue will be okay. Chemo, from all the stories about it, sounds like it's tough, so good luck to him on that.

Man, best of luck. I know how scary the cancer thing can be.

When I was thirteen, my grandmother has a partial masectomy due to a cancerous lump and four years ago my mom (a lifelong smoker... of course) had a third of a lung removed because of a tumor. If anything, they're both around and kicking. So cancer CAN be beaten.

Of course, having stuff like this happen is part of the reason why the only thing I genuinely fear IS cancer. It's turned me into a bit of a hypochondriac. Having a lot of downtime at work and an internet connection doesn't help. Everyone: if you have a medical question, just ask your doctor. Looking symptoms up online will ONLY bug you out.

It never ceases to amaze me how you can make some shitty joke about chemo, but I get shit for doing the same thing... hypocrisy ate my brain.

EDIT: I will remove my "inappropriate" comments...

Tish and Jew: both of you end it. if anything keep it out of here.

LS: I'm not going to bother you with my dad's turbulent medical history in the last three and a half years of his life. About all I can tell you is that in this kind of situation, not everything is trivial. Zeke's right: trying to look into this stuff from medical "professionals" on the internet can be unnerving. If you have a family physician that has known the family for a while, they can be someone to at least talk to about things you can do to help your dad through.

Keep up with it, yo.

I don't want to seem insincere or lacking sympathy, believe me, I've been through similar situations throughout my life. My grandfather has had prostate cancer, over a dozen heart attacks, 2 triple bypasses, and lung cancer. My brother was born with a congenital heart defects (Ventricular septal defects - 2 holes in his heart), an artery too small to pump blood, and as a result was hospitalized for the first year of his life. Also, a few weeks ago, I found out that my uncle has prostate cancer, and my dad is waiting on test results for the same.

Hang in there, the bumps in the road can only make you a stronger person. You may not see that now, but you will.

Even if we don't get along on the forums, I have nothing but good will towards your dad, and I hope his health improves.

I've got a positive update:

He came by today and other than the chemo making him lose his hair, he's MUCH better. He can talk without any pain. He said he does experience pain, but it's like a 1 or 2 so it's barely noticable. He said he's lost 50 pounds from all of this and disability has helped out with the more menial things as well.

He's part of this study with 5 other tongue cancer patients, one being a woman from China. My dad says that everyone's recovering nicely and that tongue cancer has like a 70% survival rate.

In short, I think the worst is over. And I thank everyone for their wishes and prayers (where appropriate).
