This.

Entry 3.5ish

Did Zora's River. As I entered and re-entered, the owl showed up to give his speech FOUR FUCKING TIMES!

By entering and re-entering I mean things like going down hidden potholes for goodies.

Hah, the owl! I almost forgot about him, it's been way too long. So annoying, yet so funny.

The best part is that he asks if you want him to repeat what he said and YES is the default option.

Enjoying the discussion so far. JRA, you had mentioned early on that you're playing the original version with the Muslim chanting and crescent moon symbols. Are you on the gold-colored N64 cartridge? That's the one my friend owned for his console, and I feel like that may have been the original version, but I'm not for certain.

All I can say is that the Master Quest edition on the Gamecube was the first time I had noticed their absence.

I pressed YES by accident all the time. I was so used to games saying something like "do you understand?" that I'd see it and just select it out of habit.

I did the same.

On another note, this thread has made me want to play through my N64 copy of the game. I am going to start it up tomorrow.

Yeah I want to play through it again but all the places I looked when I was rebuying 64 games wanted something like 40-50 bucks for it at the time so I never purchased it. Can pick it up online now for a better price than I could back then but I'm thinking about a 3DS so I might just pick up a used copy on that instead since I'll need something while I wait for the new Harvest Moon to come out.

No gold cartridge. Thought I originally had one, and asked by Dad's wife if it was around because I was in Bloomington and she said she couldn't find a gold cartridge. I looked myself and found the game, it just wasn't gold. I did have a gold cartridge, but it was Majora's Mask.

Delayed entry:

I decided to go through the Happy Mask sequence just to get it out of the way, but I didn't want to sell the bunny ears until I got the Giant wallet, cos he fills you up with money to the maximum. To only go to 200 would be wasting cash. So I get 30 Skulltulas, during the process of which I had to enter Jabu-Jabu's belly and get the Boomerang, run circles around Lon Lon Ranch where he usually is. I do this for about 6-7 minutes and he's not showing up, so I look to my guide to see if I'm missing something and I read this:

Bunny Hood: After borrowing the Bunny Hood and beating the Jabu Jabu dungeon,

FUUUUUUUUU

I think the event that triggers getting the Nocturne of Shadow is just going to Kakariko once you have the first three medallions. It'll be on fire, and Shiek shows up and teaches you the Nocturne. I always do Shadow first, because it's easy as /fuck/.

Ah. I guess I just didn't go to Kakariko Village as Adult Link at all between beating the Water Temple and the Spirit Temple, because, really, why would I? Kakariko Village sucks?

Also, I think I might have beat the Spirit Temple before the Water Temple. I didn't open doors in the most efficient order and ended up with a bad case of Can't Find The One Fucking Key That's Left.

Finding the keys in the Water Temple is easily the most annoying part of that dungeon. And I don't think the order you open doors matters at all for that, you'll still have to search around for that stupid key remaining unless you remember the dungeon by heart.

I just read that the 1.0 version of the game, which includes the Muslim chanting and moon symbols, is present in both the gold and some grey cartridges.

Also, I always went through the Shadow Temple first. I have never really enjoyed it or the Spirit Temple as much as the Forest, Fire and Water ones. It would be nice if the Shadow Temple had a music track separate from the Kakariko Well, but I'll admit that's being nitpicky on an excellent game.

Also, Greg had previously mentioned a glitch that allowed the game to be completed in minutes - you can find the video here. Basically, some well-executed shenaniganry in the Deku Tree can allow the player to teleport to the game's final moments.

I want them to find a OoT version of the SMW credit-warp glitch, so they reach the ending by screwing around with a Deku Baba.

Yep, I have a grey cart with the chanting, symbols and red blood when you stab Gannon. At least I think the blood is another difference.

Cartridge Versions

There are three different versions of game cartridges: 1.0 (NUS-CZGE-USA), 1.1 (NUS-CZLE-USA), and 1.2 (NUS-CZLE-USA-1). The differences are minor, but include cartridge color (1.1 and 1.2 are gray, 1.0 can be gold or gray) and the swordless glitch in 1.0 that was fixed in 1.1. Also from version 1.0 to version 1.1, a glitch where you could steal the fishing pole was removed. From version 1.1 to 1.2 the color of Ganon's blood was changed from red to green. Minor glitches in the Twinrova fight scene were corrected. In-game elements relating to Muslim culture, such as the background music of the Fire Temple (which included a choir that Nintendo felt resembled a holy Muslim chant), as well as the emblem on the Mirror Shield (whose design was a crescent moon and a star, also a symbol associated with Islamic culture), were altered in version 1.2 to avoid offending Muslims. The shield design was changed in the GameCube version. The symbol is also seen on other more minor objects such as blocks. In each subsequent version until 1.2, some very minor pieces of dialog were re-translated.

All Japanese cartridges for the Nintendo 64 are version 1.0. In North America, all three versions were released (in fact, all gold cartridges were 1.0). In Europe, only 1.2 was available. The Virtual Console release seems to be 1.2, once again with the emblem change from GCN versions.

Zora Falls was always my favorite place in OOT, especially for young Link when you can dive off the cliffs <3.

In terms of glitches, there's another difference between the three versions.

I'm assuming you've all heard of the Swordless Link glitch. If not... http://www.jaytheham.com/zcw/Ocarina_of_Time_Swordless_Link

That has more than everything you'd want to know about it.

If you're at all interested in hearing the differences, then:

[SPOILER:090d5d3b16]The difference in the cartridges is how you trigger this trick. In the oldest version, you can activate it in a very simple way--save the game after Ganon knocks your sword away in the final battle and then just reload.

In 1.1, they removed it for some of the cartridges. If that doesn't work, you can go to the fishing pond. Once there, equip the hover boots and cast the rod while floating above water. You'll cast it, but fall in and start swimming, so you can move while fishing. This breaks it and allows you to leave with the fishing rod. You can cast it, but that freezes Link forever. If you manage to avoid it, the game has registered Link as "swordless" and you're good. Leaving Lake Hylia gets rid of the pole, I think.

In 1.2, it's the hardest to do. The previous two glitches are removed, and the only way to do it is to use the Ocarina Item glitch, where you catch a bug or fish, take it to the final boss battle, release it, catch it again (gotta have the bottle with something in it in your hand or else it won't work), then you flip backwards and press the C-button with the full bottle, then quickly press one of the other two C-items. if you did it right, when you land, Link will pull out the item you hit after the bottle and start playing it like an ocarina. This way, you can warp out of the battle since the Ocarina is disabled during a boss fight.[/SPOILER:090d5d3b16]

Fun times. Swordless Link is an amazing glitch.

For the most part I'm doing it blind but if it's something annoying like the grave digging tour heart-piece I'll use it then. I have 80% of the game memorized anyways. Besides, whenever I use Strategy wiki for other games, I constantly see Ocarina of Time as the most popular one so I figure I'd use it where appropriate to see if it's actually worth the webspace it's printed on.

Eh, it was at first. But Dark Link has been becoming more and more of a pain in the ass each time I play. That will probably be the hardest part of this playthrough.

The only thing I used a guide for on my last playthrough was finding the runner in Hyrule field. I don't think I realized he didn't appear until you had done certain things, but I used a FAQ to find his end point, and then I camped out near it until he showed up. This was after I spent had spent at least 2 hours worth of time roaming Hyrule field at prior times trying to find him.

I don't remember if the original version did this, but the 3DS version put a Skulltula symbol on the map screen for areas that you've cleared of Skulltulas, so I used that to find all the Skulltulas.

Yes they did indeed. For both Hyrule Field and the dungeons. It doesn't matter that much anyway, as I'm not gonna get 100 skultullas. Pointless waste of time.

I haven't decided if I'm going to get the Giant's Sword though.

I say go for Biggeron's Sword. It's a lot of fun to play around with. And if you know the steps, it's not even all that hard.
