Had a Blackberry curve a couple of years ago. Realized that I used hardy any of the "Smart Phone" features, and only used the internet maybe once a month while out and about. Wasn't worth it. Dumped the data plan and went back to a regular Samsung phone.
There is hardly anywhere I go, where I don't have close access to free wi-fi I can use with my Netbook. So, why pay more on a slow browsing phone?

Up until recently I have been in 100% agreement with you Knyte. My adventures down the east coast into Philly, Baltimore, and DC made me realize that in this day and age, having Google in your pocket can really help you make decisions on the fly instead of preplanning everything. Not having info in Phily caused me to walk about 2 hours extra in the wrong direction.
Outside of travel, I'm not sure it is necessary if you have a lot of PC access. My 12 hours per normal day seems like plenty. Still I am hoping that a smart phone will actually allow me to reduce my desk time by a few hours.
I am getting a Thunderbolt in a few days. I want to use it as a point and shoot camera replacement so that I can save up and get a SLR. It will be a GPS for my car so I don't pay for an additional unit. It will be a web browser. I plan to use the video chat with co-workers to be able to remotely see field problems and reduce the number of times that they have to bring equipment back into the office for me to work on. All in all, I have a lot of plans... if it fits the need of just a few, I'll be happy. Also, I'm excited about Google Music.

I have no argument that smartphones are better for some people. I have a GPS already, that I never have to pay for again, and has no monthly fees. Portland is a very tech savvy city, and Wi-Fi is everywhere, so if you have a portable PC you don't need to pay extra for phone web access. I have a 12 megapixel SLR, so I don't care about phone cameras. I only need to make phone calls and send the occasional text message, so that's all I need a phone to do.
Maybe if I can get all the features of a smartphone with data plan for what I pay now, then I might upgrade again. But, I am more than happy to only pay $35 a month for unlimited talk and text for now.

Oh... I should point out that I was paying $38 for 1000 min + 100 text. I will now be paying $0. So... this would be a good choice for me

I just use the free phone T-Mobile gave me. No internet or anything. But in a few months when my contract expires, my fiance's dad can get us a good deal with Verizon so I'll probably go Android then.

There have been countless times where I am out at dinner and want to see what is going on with a sports game, or if we are talking and can't remember a movie or need a quick answer to a question. Plus I like not having to lug around a PC everywhere I go, sitting in a waiting room playing Super Nintendo or browsing the web is amazing.
Personally I could never go back to a non smart phone. Plus I get a 20% discount on my bill from work so double yay!

I haven't got my blackberry yet it's coming tomorrow.
However i don't use my phone that often so it may seem like an unusual new phone to get. I'm not on contract though so i can top up as i like which means i don't have to fork out huge amounts of money each month for a service i'm not using.
I will use the internet and stuff on it as i am out and about a lot, need to organise meetings, check mail on the move and i like to have access to internet where there isn't any - e.g. my work which isn't a desk job so i can't use a computer.
I'll probably hate it once i get it though, haha. Time will tell.

I've had an LG Lotus for the last 2+ years, and despite the fact that it kept fucking breaking and I kept having to replace it, it's been a great phone. I love the QWERTY keyboard on it, since I text a ton... I'll never be able to go back to a normal phone.
That said, my sister wants to upgrade her phone to the EVO she got, which means we have to upgrade to a data plan, so I think I'm going to be getting an EVO of my own... probably the EVO Shift. Really excited about having a touch-screen phone, and since we have a shared account with three people on it, the bill gets split so it's not so painful.
I really only use my phone right now for talking and texting. I have a few games on it, and it had a few, I dunno, pseudo-apps on it that you could install (the weather, your horoscope, movie times). I'm not sure which features of the smart phone I'll be using, but both my mom and my sister seem convinced that if I had access to the apps and a decent internet connection on my phone, I'd use it constantly. I'll admit, if the phone can do a lot of the internet browsing that I usually do on my laptop, I'm going to be hauling my laptop around a hell of a lot less.

I'll never understand how anyone could feasibly think emulation on phones is a good idea.

it works alright for RPG's since they are slow paced & dont require more than 1 button press at a time. i have an SNES emulator on mine and am currently playing Earthbound on it.

This. And seriously. I love playing my old RPGs when in the car or waiting at the DMV or whatever.

Blackberry Torch with 5 gigs a month data. I never even come close but its part of the student bundle that's $20 a month and comes with voice mail and caller ID and shit. I am all about my phone. I do most of my internet viewing on there. RSS feeds, SydLexia.com, emails, I even use it as a GPS when I drive. I would truly be lost without my phone.

Droid X. It has officially become my external brain. I dunno what I'd do without him.
His name is Hal. All of my alerts are either Hal's voice (from 2001), the Star Trek TNG computer, or GLaDOS.
Yeah. I'm a nerd.

After getting my Thunderbolt yesterday I have been trying to figure out what to use for the sounds... GLaDOS is a very good idea.

I have a basic phone, I am not a teenage girl and have no need to text message while on the go. Every time I see some droopy kid staring at his smartphone coming my way in skinny jeans I make it a point to knock him over.

Hahaha, you sound like my mother. Her and her love of basic phones.
I text much more than I talk on my phone, as does my sister. We text each other because calling is completely useless when she has four screaming kids that she can't really take her attention away from, or quiet enough, to have a coherent conversation on the phone. It's easier to text, because it takes less of her attention to reply and there's no risk of either of us misunderstanding the other when there's no shrieking to drown out the conversation. Also, most of my friends are in college like me, and it's hard to remember when their classes are, or when they're working. Texting is the best way to get a hold of them, as they can reply when it's convenient and no one runs the risk of calling someone while they're in class or on the job. Likewise, I tell my friends that it's better to text me to get a hold of me as opposed to calling, because if I'm lucky, I can answer maybe 1 out of every 5 calls I get. Too damn busy.

I bought a Droid off Ebay and have it rooted and overclocked. This does just about everything I want(web, emulators, pandora, youtube, etc) and I'm not locked into a 2-year contract. My biggest gripe is to be stuck on a contract with a phone that is no longer supported by Motorola, Samsung, etc.

I use La-Mulana sounds on mine. Hear them enough times and you'll eventually come to love them more than the Zelda equivalents.

There are some emulators that can connect to a Wii remote or Bluetooth controller, so that you can play games like Super Mario World. I have a NES and SNES emulator on both my iPad and iPod touch. The iPad emulates both consoles at full speed, with excellent sound quality. The iPod touch emulates the NES perfectly, but the SNES emulator lags a bit unless I set the frameskip to 1.
I don't know what emulation apps are available on the Android, but I hope they are as good as the iOS emulators that I use, since I might be getting an Android phone soon.
And if you're interested, the iOS emulators I use are NES.emu and Snes9x EX. All the other emulators for iOS are not very good.
