Soundgarden kicks ass and Cornell is seriously one of the greatest singers of all time, but Alice In Chains are the grungiest. They had dreadlocks and OD'd on heroin and shit, that's how grungy they were.

Man... Tad kick ass. I wouldn't say FF are grunge though. More post-grunge.
P.S. Soundgarden are the grungiest.
Agreed, huge Soundgarden/Cornell fan.
Badmotorfinger is the grungiest!
I'm more a fan of Superunknown, there's not a bad song on there.
I do like Badmotorfinger too.
There used to be a kickass version of Nothing to Say on youtube but alas it's gone now.
Have you heard this?
New Damage is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs. I really can see how Brian May fits in with it.

I liked Blind Melon. At least their big hit CD from the 90s, I have it around here somewhere, I got it for 25 cents at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Good shit Alowishus, I honestly don't think there is a bad song on Badmotorfinger.
Slaves & Bulldozers is the shit, and Cornell is on top of his game.
I always considered Alice a metal band. They were like, sludge metal or something.

If you're talking late 80s metal, I don't think Alice in Chains fits that mold(let's not talk about their first album.) Sludge metal? Yeah man, they were like sludge, all grungy and shit. We could even give it a cool name, we could call it grunge!

Alice in Chains has a lot of metal elements but are more of a grungy, hard-rock thing.
Well what I'm trying to say is that Alice In Chains and to a lesser extent Soundgarden both had much heavier sounds than a lot of the so called grunge bands. Alice in particular feels more metaly than say I dunno, Mudhoney. I know they all got the same grunge label slapped on them in the end.

I have always said that grunge is related to geographical location and not sound. If it was related to sound all the bands would sound the same. After all it was originally termed, THE SEATTLE SOUND.
Though people get upset when i say that Stone Temple Pilots aren't grunge because they aren't from Seattle, they are from California (i believe). Hole aren't either.
People also argue that the sound topics makes them grunge, i.e. angsty and shit.
The problem with that is that people just call everyone grunge then. I've seen people call Seaweed an Australian band grunge. Sure i'm sure Bush from the UK are grunge too. What about the Melvins they must be grunge too!
Blind Melon are grunge, they have had depressing songs. HEY WHAT ABOUT WEEZER OR JEFF BUCKLEY!
Bottom line is really who cares, they are all alternative rock anyway (or metal).
Also if you don't believe me about people saying they are grunge go to the grunge wikipedia page and read the discussion.
They say bands like STP are grunge but not Smashing Pumpkins. Lol like what the hell what is the distinguishing feature between the too?
There isn't really it's just all fucking stupid.

Funny you should say that about late 80s metal and how AiC don't fit in.... i guess you haven't heard Alice in Chains really early work
Enjoy the cheesy hair metal. Also i would say that AiC are a bit too fast to be sludge.
This is what i think of when i think Sludge:

Uh... yeah, I have. That's why I said "let's not talk about their first album."
Every band has growing pains, look at Pantera's first album too. No, it wasn't Cowboys From Hell.

Well that's funny because those songs aren't off an album.
Their first album was Facelift which isn't hair metal and came out in 1990.

Piss off, nerd. I don't have the wherewithal to differentiate between an album, LP, EP, demo, whatever the fuck. If it was recorded and available to others on some kind of physical media, it's an album to me.

Well it had a limited release and is quite rare in it's physical form. It's not my fault you're wrong.
I literally posted the video in case you hadn't seen it and you go off at me, you fucking psycho.
...and also you have to specify these things, you said their first album, their first album is fucking facelift. Hence why i posted the video.
There is no being a nerd about it, if you don't specify the right fucking thing how is anyone meant to know.

Nah, I concede defeat. If he's going to be anal retentive about it, then retent he shall. My bad for not being more clear.
I leave these last words though: anyone who has even just browsed the Wikipedia entry for Alice In Chains should have known exactly what I meant when I talked about not mentioning their early stuff, especially when I said they weren't a lot like late 80s metal.

This isn't why i was pissed off. I was pissed off because i posted that video asking if you had seen it and you replied with a sarcastic/dickish response. The later replies were only because of what you said earlier.
I guess it is my fault because i didn't read your post correctly but still i didn't think your response was necessary.

If you had said that i would have totally understood, wouldn't have posted the video and this whole "uproar" wouldn't have happened. But you said:

Which made me automatically think:
1. Facelift isn't hair metal.
2. Maybe he think's that album is hair metal, it does sort of have elements of it in it.
3. Wouldn't it be amusing to show him the actual AiC hair metal stuff?
Apologies anyway man, i didn't mean to be a dick.

I'm sure Them Crooked Vultures and their sheer awesomeness was a little bit of an influence for Dave to get this band's old sound back. Foo Fighters there for awhile were really getting on my damn nerves.

Speaking of early work. Have any of you heard Slipknot's MateFeedKillRepeat? It's fucking crazy that, that band turned into what they are today. AIC will always be one of my favorite bands and in my opinion is definitely THE grudge band.
