I've heard good things about Samurai Champloo. My brother made me watch Hellsing and Serial Experiment Layne and I insisted on the dubs. Both of those were straight to video releases and the dubs were very good. The Akira dub was pretty terrible, but that's from the 80s. Akira in general just wasn't all that interesting to me.

Meatloaf - If you want to see more Miyazaki films, Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro should be pretty high on your list (and who doesn't like Lupin?)

Subs v. dubs once again - Like Blackout it varies for me. Most Gundam shows have pretty good voice casts in both languages. The Slayers has jokes/punchlines can only be "gotten" in Japanese and have to be localized, so it's better watched in English along with some shows have a predominantly "western" feel to it like Cowboy Bebop, Big O (very boring in it's original Japanese btw) or akin to Sathien's Baccano example. Series that take place in Japan kinda sound weird dubbed when you have whitey saying Japanese words/techniques/etc. so most of the time those are better subbed.

Also I remember Ponyo doing pretty good in Japan, and having the widest release of Ghibli film so far in the US, in addition to a strong ad campaign here.

Ponyo was great, and the wife and I saw it in theatres. I think if it would've been subbed instead of dubbed, I wouldn't have gone and just rented it instead. I'm much more a fan of dubbing, although it can have hilarious results, as in Biozombie or Kung Fu Hustle, just to name two.

Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

Speaking of which, Castle of Cagliostro (along with a pair of scenes from Mystery of Mamo) was completed redubbed with a new plot by Stern Electronics for their 1983 Laserdisc arcade game Cliff Hanger.

Surprisingly I've never seen Lupin III, I know he's a master thief, so I think it'd be something I'd like.

I guess it's best to say it all depends on the particular anime. I think dubbed perhaps has more potential in most ways, perhaps everyway... However, I think there are many cases where subbed has done a better job, usually not becaue of a lack of talent eleswhere, but a lack of dedication and caring in the work.

By the way I sent a PM to ya Syd... after you read it you'll need to play me in magic at least once. So we can just say we did it, and it felt good.

Nasuicaa was pretty good. So was Porco Rosso. Also see Pom Poko if you like raccoons who turn there nuts into boats. I shit you not.
