Ha ha yes! FFVI was better, or at least to me. The characters were way better. There were so many you couldn't even conclude who the main character was. As a character, I didn't care for Cloud that much, although his limit breaks were pretty cool. But the characters in VII paled in quality to the ones in VI.

Today it's the story, music & atmosphere. At the time the graphics were pretty wicked also. When I first played it in 1997, I thought you couldn't even make a game this awesome. Fighting & leveling up was also pretty addicting.

I first saw the game when I went over to a friends house and he was battling Sephiroth, probably in '97. When Meteor came up, it was the craziest thing I had ever seen. I remember asking how something that can destroy the sun only damages the characters and how 9999 damge doesn't necessarily kill someone. He welcomed me to the world of Final Fantasy.
I think it has some replay value for me although I've played through the whole thing twice in my life. Some rpg games like Oblivion for example have zero replay value IMO.
I'll also echo Syd's take. FFVII took a revolutionary step in what a console is cappable of doing. I bought a PS to play this game just like I bought PS2 to play GTA III. I still haven't seen anything since that forces me to buy a new console just to play a game.

Yea, pretty much, I found myself far more invested in FFVI's characters than FFVII's characters. They are much more endearing IMO.

I'm gonna say that part of FFVII's status comes from it getting a good deal of marketing as opposed to any other rpg released at that point. The game got a lot of exposure for an rpg and commercials showing off the pretty cutscenes helped for sure.
The PS1 also made big leaps in bringing in more folks to gaming in general, hence it being the starting point for a lot of folks for rpgs. Chances are, if you played rpgs before, you weren't as enamored with the game as other folks who broke their rpg hymens on it.

For the last god damn time...Cloud is not Emo.
From Wikipedia...
Usually among teens, the term "emo" is stereotyped with wearing skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colors, and tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in emo fashion. Black Converse sneakers and skate shoes, such as Vans, are popularly worn among people of the emo fashion. Some males also wear thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.[99][100][101]
The emo fashion is also recognized for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Also popular is hair that is straightened and dyed black. Bright colors, such as blue, pink, red, or bleached blond, are also typical as highlights in emo hairstyles. Short, choppy layers of hair are also common. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad.[102] In the early 2000s, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look[103] but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the color black replacing sweater vests.
Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden.[104][105][106] It has also been associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.[107][108]
Ok so he has studded bracelets on his arm. Don't forget there is also a talking Wolf/Lion, and a man with a gun for a hand. He has a lack of Emotion, he's not sensitive, he isn't shy unless he's dressing like a girl to save Tifa, he is an extrovert in conversation and an introvert in his actions. He has hidden angst which comes out when he falls into the life stream and I can't remember him being depressed even after his woman died, he never cut himself or tried to kill himself. Sure his shirt maybe tight and purple but for crying out loud he carries a sword as big as himself around. Give Cloud a break you haters. Attack a true emo...Squall!

I've only played it once, and to my knowledge, it's one of my favorites because it's the first RPG I beat myself (I used to just watch my friends beat these kinds of games) and it holds a special place in my heart because of it.
I'm pretty sure the biggest reason it's considered so great is for somewhat the same reason, it's was really the first mainstream RPG and everyone remembers it because it got everybody else into the genre who wasn't already, and it's just the fond memories. Cause looking back on every RPG I've ever played, a lot of them have better stories, characters, are more engrossing, ect.

Hah, I think you Nailed it.
I think a lot of the "glory" came from there not being anything else like it. As mentioned, more edgy adult themes were in the game. It wasn't cartoony, or Kiddy. It had its own flavor to it. I can't agree more though that all the post movies and whatever is stupid and IMO is runing its image.
I still replay it every once in a while, but I do agree, its long, boring and tedious at parts.

hey, sephiroth is the most badass villian ever. allright, lets take a look on the evidence. First, he can not die. In every game (or movie) were sephiroth gets killed, his death isn't permanent. He'll always show up again to kick clouds ass to the moon (or getting his ass kicked to the moon). Second, you can not run away. His sword is just too long, plus, he can fly! And if everything fails, theres still the Super Nova Spell to erase every atom of yours. Third, the Song. One Winged Angel is the best Boss theme EVER. You can't beat it, you just can't do that because its the ultimate Boss Theme. If you would enhance that song it would be kitsch. Progress is determined to fail, that makes the Sepiroth Theme ultimate. Fourth, his dark personality. The evil inside of him is always subtle and only used to punctuate his Person wich makes im never noncredible, because ultimately his just an insane freak who wants to his mommy.

I'll agree with Iron Mike.. The end battle with Sephiroth was and is simply epic. I remember when he first cast Super Nova on my party thirty seconds in to the cinematics I was sure my entire party was too weak and ill- equippped to handle this. Sephiroth should definitely be in the top 5 of the best video game villains of all time.

Yeah, because dark, brooding, long haired, sword wielding bad guy is TOTALLY a new thing and has never been done in books, movies or video games OTHER than Final Fantasy VII EVER!

Kefka in the game before actually manages to destroy the whole world, as does Kuja two games later. Super Nova is a horrible special move. One-Winged Angel is good, but I prefer Dark Messenger from 9. Sephiroth's actual villainy accomplishments are pretty light compared to most other FF villains.

So can Dr. Wily, Big Boss and a fuckton of other villains. Nothing impressive.

Oh, so he's a godmoder. We've seen plenty of enemies you can't run away from (some of them could fly also. And they had swords, too).

Oh wow, like we haven't seen that before *extremely long cough*Ed Gein along with Norman Bates, Jason Voorhees and those are just the mommy's boys - I won't challenge his subtle evil, because he isn't subtle. His evil is oh-so-obvious, like Dracula's, the Joker's and Santa Claus'.*end extremely long cough*

Up to now it failed to really catch my attention after 5 hours of gameplay, unlike, you know, every other Final Fantasy I ever played (except 2).
I don't know when it gets better, but to be honest I found the beginning of the game quite boring.
I'll give it another go eventually. I have a better TV now, that isn't really fucking dark making it almost impossible to fucking see anything when it's night in the game.

It was good cause of how it was the first Square game to really do the whole theme of memories that I can think of, at least that I played. That plus the MUSIC, plus materia being fun, plus the story was pretty suprising when I first played it.
