Look, people that wear all black trench coats and shit have a reputation in this country. It's unfortunate, but if you are gonna wear black trench coats, and whatever other shit that goth people wear than you should also understand the consequences.
Would you go to a job interview and expect to get hired dressed like that? Fuck no. So don't be pissed when people act like that towards you if that's actually how you dress in your normal life. |
As someone who wore a trenchcoat far before Columbine I was always annoyed at the perception that I was some kind of retarded massacre fanboy looking for shock value, I pretty much had to retire my coat.

I miss the days when trenchcoats were acceptable.
But on topic, I have no reason to dislike goths. In fact, they're interesting to hang around, even while I am not one myself. But some of these people calling themselves goths... the ones with rings growing on every square inch of their body, for instance, kind of scare me. But only because I can't understand what would possess someone to get that many rings on their body.

When people go out of their way to show how interesting and unique they are I usually act like I never noticed them.

I'm fine with goths, but I fucking hate emo kids. That's all we have around here, though, and it's fucking annoying to hear their horrible excuse for music at the local video/game/music store. Ugh. As far as dressing like a certain group, I guess I fit into nerd, although I've been branching out into hipster douchefuck.
Nothing like a hot goth chick, though.

Goths are always whining about their mistreatment, but in actuality they want the attention because without the get-up, they are just ordinary, more than likely, homely people. If you're a goth and truly love the look, then you would be content with the friends you have and not give a shit what anyone else has to say. Goths obviously have common interests as i have common interests with my friends, so why even care about what other people that would more than likely not share the same interests have to say about you?

Or maybe we do like the look and are just tired of ignorant people going "oh look its the freak show! look at the freaks! what a bunch of freaks!!"
Or maybe Im just sick of hearing about innocent people who dress differently getting beaten, sometimes to death to death
"In 2006 James Eric Benham, a Navy sailor, along with his brother, attacked four goths in San Diego California. One goth, Jim Howard, had to be rushed to the hospital. The perpetrators of this attack were found guilty in August 2007 on four related accounts, two of which were felonies, though Benham only spent 37 days in jail. During the trial, it was made clear that the goths were assaulted due to their subculture affiliation. This can be otherwise known as a "hate crime" though the San Diego courts do not recognize this attack as such at this time.
On August 11, 2007, two goths, walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Lancashire, England were attacked by a group of teenagers because they were goths. Sophie Lancaster subsequently died from her injuries. On April 29, 2008, two teens Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris were convicted for the murder of Lancaster and given life sentences, three others were given lesser sentences for the assault on her boyfriend Robert Maltby. In delivering the sentence Judge Anthony Russell stated "This was a hate crime against these completely harmless people targeted because their appearance was different to yours." He went on to defend the goth community, calling goths "perfectly peaceful, law-abiding people who pose no threat to anybody." Judge Russell add that he "recognised it as a hate crime without Parliament having to tell him to do so, and had included that view in his sentencing." Despite this ruling, a bill to add discrimination based on subculture affiliation to the definition of hate crime in British law was not presented to parliament.
In 2008, Paul Gibbs, a Briton from Leeds, UK was attacked by three men. He and his group of about 20 young goths were on a camping trip in the vicinity of Rothwell when two 18-year-olds (Quinn Colley, Ryan Woodhead) and one 22-year-old (Andrew Hall) raided, stabbed four of the men and robbed two women. Quinn Colley had previously appeared in a homemade clip rapping on his love of violence. Gibbs was offered a motorbike ride by the attackers who at first insidiously befriended the group. On their way Gibbs was knocked down from the bike, rendered unconscious by a helmet and had his ear sliced off. Afterwards, the attackers returned to the camp. Colley and Woodhead were sentenced to at leat 2.5 years of prison while Hall at least 4.5 years. Gibbs' ear was found 17 hours later, thus doctors could not immediately reattach it. Instead, they stitched it inside his stomach with the hope that some of the tissue will re-grow. The ear could be reconstructed by using cartilage removed from Gibbs' ribs.
"Violent and abusive attacks against “alternative lifestylers” are rising in Bradford, according to the manager of one of the city’s leading bands.
Joolz Denby, who manages rock three-piece New York Alcohol Anxiety Attack (NYAAA), claims that while incidents are on the rise, the majority go unreported because of the insular mentality of people who often get labelled Goths or moshers.
Her outburst comes after her band’s treasured psychedelic touring van was damaged in what she believes was a targeted attack."
"POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a group of ‘goths’ were attacked by a gang of ten Asian teenagers.
Two of the children were assaulted in the incident, with one 15-year-old having his head rammed into a wall."
Yup we sure do just want all that attention :p

When you hit puberty, you'll realize that shit is for the birds, holmes. Just be a person. Don't try to act like a certain crowd or a certain style of person. In the end it will ALWAYS make you feel silly and you'll look back on it and regret not just being yourself.

Just emulate Nickelodeon's Doug and start your own style, only later to learn it already exists, thus ensuing in both hilarity and a valuable lesson learned.

If you're so sick of it, then stop dressing in such a provocative and reactionary way. There's a reason you like that particular fashion because you like the message it sends to everyone else and how it makes you feel in that context.
It's not that society dislikes Goths, it's that society usually chaffs against anyone who dresses in an extreme manner, especially if the fashion can be construed as aggressive, "scary", or things stereotypical criminals wear (i.e. black trenchcoat, black make-up, lots of piercings, big rattling chains, combat boots, wild hair, etc). If you dress far outside the norm of accepted fashion, don't be surprised when some people call you a freak and others cross the street to avoid passing you.
It's far easier for you to change your own aggressive look slightly than to try to change the minds of thousands of people every day who will prejudge you based on that look.

Comparing the goth crowd to someone with a different color skin being persecuted is fucking dumb.
"Oh, I'm tired of my identity as a suburban white kid, I think I'll dress a certain way to identify with minorities, even though I have the option to not dress like a weirdo, therefore pissing off or freaking out a good chunk of the populace."
It's not cool, you have a choice to dress like a goddamn adult, you aren't going to be lumped in with minorities because you aren't. You are a goth kid, and goth kids don't really exist outside the realm of teenager.

I've never personally had a problem with Goth's. They're just a minority with their own social views and standards.
Although the only one I ever knew was some girl who was Emo and just didn't want to be identified as such :/

you realize you dont really know a thing about me correct? What makes someone weird? how they dress or how they act? Because to me a weirdo is someone who has a great standard of living, is a good man in the community, takes care of his family, has a good house, car, a dog and he abuses children or beats his wife every night.
A criminal is someone who causes harm to the public or hurts the public interest in any way
But a group of people who like a certain type of fashion... give me a break, stop being so ignorant

Sorry bassguy, I don't care how you fucking dress and never will, it's whatevs, but your last response totally reminded me of the Michael Jackson episode of South Park. Made me laugh and disturb people around me.

I just find it ironic that someone will be like "Man, I hate all these sheeple that all look the same, wearing fancy shirts and nice clothes. I think I'll go find a clique to join where everyone wears the same homeless looking black clothing and listen to the exact same kind of music."
I don't get it. Can you not have fun with a normal group of people? Are you mad that people treat goths with disdain when they wear clothes that have a history of violence associated with them? How surprised are you really when a goth guy wearing tight black pants, fucked up hair and chains walks into a redneck bar and get's his ass beat? I wear jeans and nice shirts, and I wouldn't dream of going into a cowboy bar or tranny bar because I'd get stared at or get in a fight (I learned long ago that just because someone dresses like a woman doesn't mean they can't fight like a grown ass man). But I'm also not gunning for attention.
Please don't get me wrong, buddy. I have goth friends, albeit many years younger than me. All of the friends I had that were goth in high school are adults now and really embarrassed when people talk about their goth past and we mess with them, all in jest of course. It's not a big deal man, it's just a phase and the majority of people grow out of it when you actually have to look presentable when you get a real job and a family.

Bottom line? Don't try to look a certain way if you're going to complain about the consequences of it.

I have a real job and real friends and I avoid redneck bars at all costs... regardless of how I dress I wouldnt step foot into places that I dont feel safe, On sunday two people got shot outside of a prep bar 7 blocks away from our Industrial bar... where violent occurances are so rare that I dont even remember the last time an altercation took place there
Lots of adults in our scene dress Goth too and they come from all walks of life, I would like to ask when I said I hate everyone that wears "normal" clothes... I do notm I have friends from all walks of life as well, it would be pretty hypocritical of me to say people need to be accepting and then say I hate the way a certain group of people dress.

You know what I miss? When the stereotype was that everyone "goth" looked like Robert Smith or Edward Scissorhands and talked like Bela Lugosi or the lead singer of Bauhaus. Not now, where everybody who considers themself part of the goth crowd is assumed to look like a cross between Kanye West and the lost member of Insane Clown Posse.

I think thats a huge misconception
goths dont really wear corpse paint... but people into Black Metal do, I think its kind of silly
most goths up here wear like Tripp NYC or Cargo Pants, army pants, Lip Service, Bio Hazard Symbols, things with Skulls, Fishnet Shirts
stuff like that, But we do have what we refer to as mall goths or terror cookies... the "stereotypical angry goth that all of you guys dislike so much and give the rest of us a bad name"
