Agreed, amidst the many Haloclones roaming the market on not only 360, but also PS3 Gears stands out to me.

You guys never played the second one, did you? God it suck. It looked pretty, but there was no good story, too many shark jumps, and the fact that they completely forgot about the lambent wretches is just lame. Also, the multiplayer (vs,) blows and horde is the only thing to play with your friends after the campaign

I loved the gameplay of Gears 2, except for the whole "WHEREZ MA WYFE" part. I love the hilariously bad apex moment where he's staring into the vapid, listless eyes of his tortured and emaciated wife before pulling out a gigantic revolver, and sending her to god in a manner that would require a spatula and a gallon of club soda to clean up.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

So many memories. I used to play Halo 2 online all the time back pre-360 days. Sucks they are cutting it off. More power to the guys keepin on their systems to play. I find that funny, but awesome.

I never understood the appeal of the Halo series. I found it bubbly, sluggish, and overall boring.

I disagree. I loved Gears 2. True we had no lambent wretches, but meh......we've got Brumaks this time.

I don't play multi-player, so I can't comment on that. But I enjoy the Horde mode in single player.

Actually I've played them both, it's not shit. It's the same base gameplay as halo 2. It just has more variety and functionality. More vehicles, weapons, costumes, maps. I'm gonna go ahead and say 3 is better. I'm don't want to piss anyone off here. But halo is a good FPS and you guys are just hating on it because it's popular. Well some things are popular for a reason... because they're good... or because will smith is in them. to quot ZP.

I don't think I have liked a straight up FPS* since the original Halo, which within itself was fun, but generic. The other games are eh though, only fun for split screen.

As a series, I never got why it was so popular. The storyline is overall subpar, with the highlight being the first game. Level design did get better as the games went on, but ended up being okay at best. There are a few cool enemies, like the hunters, but other than that, they are kind of bland. Musically... I was always playing with friends and we were too busying talking to listen. The weapon balance has gotten better, though the Halo 3 shotty feels nerfed to hell to me.

Anyways, the games are definitely overrated, probably wouldn't even put any of themin the top five FPS of all time, but they are about as enjoyable as any other standard FPS series.

*I did like Fallout 3 and Borderlands

I would think that the ability to see your character would imply a different perspective than first person.

Actually I'm not blasting Halo because it's popular, I'm blasting it because it's not that great in comparison to other games that came out around that time.

Okay around the time the original Halo came out we had Tribes 2, Rez, Metal Gear Solid 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (only the PC version) Twisted Metal Black, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, SpyHunter and Sheep, Dog'n'Wolf all of which were fantastic games. Granted not all FPS's but still it's worthwhile to mention. Then you get Halo and instantly all the frat boys down the street love it (similar to the Call of Duty Series of today, all I hear is "let's play some call of duty" or "COD man, that's the best game in the world")
Halo 2 shows up because of the drunken demand for it while at the same time we get Half-Life 2, Katamari Damacy, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Acid, two Ghost Recon Games, Ninja Gaiden, Rainbow 6 games and Unreal Tournament 2004 which is one of the best Unreal tournaments behind 3. To be honest, I played Halo 2 quite a bit and the only real difference I found was the fact that you could get a sword and online play. The storyline was way to predictable from the start and you knew that there was going to be an alliance between the Humans and the part of the Covenant.

Then here's halo 3, by this point, Halo is just became a cash cow for the people that think games are all just killing and nothing else. I can't really argue for 2007 only because it was a truly crappy year for Video games other then Legend of Zelda, Metroid Prime 3 and well Portal. It wasn't as memorable and hell, Portal was a much better game even when it was only 1/2 a game then a full game of Halo 3.

My point being is that Halo falls into what I like to define as "The Drunken Genre" no matter how crappy you are, as long as you have beer and say "hey man I got Halo or Call of Duty" or something that just involves you ducking and shooting. No skill is really required other then timing. The main storyline is like the process Doomsday was created, trial and error. Not skills, just "oh he has two choices so this time he'll do this or this"

Let me explain a little about my lambancy complaints. In the original game, lambancy just made the Horde explosive. Nothing more. Then, in the next game, suddendly the lambent are rebels and the queen Since when did that stuff make the Horde go bat shit crazy and regenerate them after you BLOW THEIR HEADS OFF? As for the Brumaks, they were a Nice addition, but werent anything compared to the goddamn reavers. BTW WTF with the lambent Brumak?

Well, as far as the lambency thing goes, my guess is that the developers didn't know where they were going to take the story when they were making the first game. At that time, the lambent wretches were probably just a minor twist to make those sections of the game more difficult. They probably didn't come up with the whole civil war thing until the next game. So yea.....there's some inconsistency there. But when it comes to a game like this, I'm not gonna be a plot-Nazi. Other types of games I definitely can nitpick the plot all day, but with Gears......meh. I enjoy it either way.

The lambent Brumak at the end was an interesting idea, but I can't believe they made it the final boss. It was easy as hell compared to General Ra'am in the first game.

This. I loved Airborne, and it would have been one of my favorites if it wasn't for the invincible gas-mask nazis. I still haven't seen the stupid AI people talk about, because your squadmates seem pretty smart compared to a lot of games.

I don't think half the people here hate Halo because it's popular, they hate it because it's so unspectacular (not to mention grossly overrated).

I agree with Nero; why are the Halo and GOW games being compared? They're two totally different games.

Halo will always suck to me, and it's a shame that WW2 games have oversaturated the market that take away from awesome ones like Resistance 1 and 2.

Personally, I enjoy Halo to a degree, mostly as a stupid little FPS I play when I don't want to think about the plot but not to the level of those twerps that think getting the Legendary difficulty logo tatooed on their arm makes them hardcore.

I do too, but it's not the most complex thing in the world. If I just finished a full day of note taking for freshman comp and sociology and then studying for Japanese, I'd rather play Halo since it's plot is considerably simpler then say, Final Fantasy Tactics.

the plot of the game is decent, but i wouldnt say its remarkable. on a scale of 1 to 10, i give it a solid 6.

Final Halo 2 Player Drops Game

It was bound to happen eventually, but the players dubbed "The Halo 2 Twelve" have finally finished their labor of love. A Bungie forum thread describes the last few players left in Halo 2, as many of the larger original group have been slowly dropping over the last few weeks. The final two were Agent Windex and Apache N4SIR. At 4:21 p.m. Pacific time yesterday, Windex posted a message that read, "I just got kicked off guys. Good Job Apache, your the last one." Apache stuck around for a few hours afterwards, but was booted as well.

The group started out much larger, as those celebrating the final hours of support for original Xbox games found that even after the servers had been closed, games could still be started if the player was already in. The numbers slowly dwindled to 14, then a dozen, and so on. Despite Microsoft's encouragement, it had to end eventually. If nothing else it's a nice testament to the kind of passion that Halo inspired in players.
