You are not.
It was first officially released in the US in 1999 as part of Final Fantasy Anthology for the PSX.
It was also one of the first SNES games to receive a full fan translation, so you can play a patched version of the original ROM.

Any version will give you the same overall experience.
The GBA version is neat because it has a few cool extras, like some extra classes.

I've only played I-VI, would have to say that IV is my favorite even though VI is probably the overall better game.

II, X, VI, V, IV, VII, I, VIII, XII, III, in that order, for me.
IX and XI are omitted as they're the only ones I've never played.

Hell yes. V! Never played III, but I have to say II didn't appeal to me as much as the first one. But that's probably just because I played it 20 years too late. If I'd played it back in '88 I'd probably love it.

I might take some shit for this, but five might be my personal favorite. I'm a big fan of the job system or any RPG with more customization. VI had enough characters to be highly customizable as well. Although I did get my fill of VI when it was released back in '94 when it was supposed to be. IV was good, however not as customizable as I would like it to be. The first one will always be the most classic to me (NES version of course). I'm currently enjoying the PS1 trilogy even though I haven't finished IX yet. Haven't played any of them beyond that and don't know if I'll even bother. As a 'retro gamer' are any of the newer ones even worth trying?

VI is the best one, followed closely by IV. As Andrew Man, I can not understand how anybody can choose anything else then these two as their top FF's.

IX.
I've played, VII, VIII, IX, X and XII and there is just something great about IX that makes me keep coming back to it.
The characters, story etc. it's just all great.

VII . I hate myself for that, but it was the first one I finished. It kind of stuck with me over the years.
Really tho, I'm divided between V, VI and IX . You can't get more classic than that.
V has four characters at once and a shitload of jobs. I absolutely love maxing out the abilities and equipment by leveling jobs.
VI has a terrific story and some of the best characters, only rivalled by IX. And Kefka is pure genius! Also, the Esper thingie to customize magic and leveling bonus is really good.
IX is the series swan song. It´s just too good. I'm waiting for a PSN release... I lent my original FFIX to a friend some time ago, and he never gave it back ._.
Also, I liked the grid system from FF X.

Hahaha, yeah, it was just a way of saying I know I'm not being original, and that the game has been overrated, but I like it anyways =)

XI and XII going unvoted-for all this time I can understand, but is X really so bad? I mean, I never finished it, but it's still good.

I didn't like it. The characters were awful and the locations were bland and boring. Plus I hated the grid system and being forced to play that awful Blitzball mini-game was bullshit.

Any Final Fantasy fan would not vote X as the best Final Fantasy. X was fun and probably my favorite PS2 release, but as far as the older games go, it cannot hold a candle to those.

1. VI
2. V
3. IV
VI was I think was the superior game (hard to argue that). V would have to be a close 2nd, and superior to IV. If you think IV was better than V then either you never played V, or have such a boner for IV due the fact that it was released first and happens to be the game everyone grew up with. If V had been released in this country when it was supposed to be, more people would probably favor it.

I've never actually played VI but when I was a kid I remember watching one of my dad's friends playing it on his SNES. I'd like to try it sometime though.
