Most cartridge system's games were expensive though, which is how if I remember correctly the PS1's 19.99-34.99 games were a factor in PS1 winning over the N64's $60 dollar ones.

Yeah...which is why I'm glad I picked Playstation.
N64 had some incredible titles, but the library was so much smaller and the games NEVER went down in price.
I usually only had to wait a year for a Playstation game to go down in price.
N64? I had to wait until 2001-2003 before I was able to snag any games cheap.

Anyways, I'm going to drop it. I can see we aren't going to agree on the subject, and that's fine. I just think it's steep for what you get. |
Yeah and that's a problem with the industry not the game itself. 50-60 is the price for a new game.

Hey syd, you may be mad about DS games being expensive still, but it allowed me to sell my DS and four games for it on ebay for 183.70 last week.
The fact that Nintendo doesn't lower their prices means the aftermarket for the games stays high, so sellers can make decent money selling
I'm still surprised someone was willing to pay 22.50 for Yoshi's Island DS....

sweet christ. call the waaambulance people.
im getting this game regardless. i know what im getting into since i've been following all the release hype and im sure ill enjoy it regardless.
i agree w/syd's statement about having 2 toads instead of wario & waluigi. even if they didnt have wario/waluigi, they shouldve had another character instead of 2 toads. maybe one toad and... idk that dog from yoshis island or something.
at least they didnt make them baby mario or baby luigi. that wouldve been stupid

I have high hopes for NSMB Wii, the DS one was good, but I felt like something was missing?
The Koopa Kids are cool, I don't mind Bowser Jr. though. |
Well, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is pretty great. You get to use all sorts of cool items, plus Yoshi is usable.
And I like the Koopa Kids too. They were some pretty awesome villains.

Man I loved the boss fights in this one. And Iggy is totally awesome now.

Oh fuck that would've been so awful. Of all the characters Nintendo tries to cram down our throats, I think I hate the babies the most.
Even Bowser Jr. is, SOMEHOW, tolerable in this game.

I believe 49.99 was standard pricing for N64 games, but I could be wrong. I do remember, however, that Yoshi's Story was met with such great backlash that it was selling $19.99 at EB three weeks after it came out. Even though I had my first job at that point, I convinced my mom to give me $20 to buy it because it would be a good title for an almost-five-year-old. And it was, except she terrible at Page 6. Specifically, she was terrible at Page 6-1, which was usually the only one she unlocked.
#edit: Standard pricing on N64 games was $59.95.

I've heard Doom 64 is actually really good, provided you play it in a pitch black room and adjust the screen brightness. Darkness problems aside, the game's level designs have garnered some significant praise.

One time I spent $69.99 on a SNES game at Babbages. I had to have Wolfenstein 3D and they were the only place that had it in Memphis.

Eh, everything else i can see, but i don't understand where you're coming from here. It looks good. It doesn't appear that anything was down sampled. This was clearly the look they were going for, and I think it looks good. In fact, it's the first mario game for their main consoles that actually looks like a mario game since the SNES. The fact that it's not pushing the consoles hardware to the limit is insignificant if they are doing exactly what they want visually. |
I guess I'm comparing it to Super Mario Galaxy which has better graphics. That really isn't fair though since Galaxy is supposed to be a 3D game and this one is supposed to be a side scroller. I guess I will just say that it isn't a revolution in graphics for the Wii, though perhaps for sidescrolling fans it is a little improvement.

That's what bothered me most about the new Mario Kart games, you aren't getting new characters, you're getting alternate versions of characters you don't give a shit about. Dry Bones Bowser? Really?

Really? The characters are what pissed you off about Mario Kart Wii the most? For me it felt like this:

No...there was a lot of stuff that annoyed me about the game...but the first was the actual roster, which is one of the first things I look at in a game. There's dozens of unused Mario characters they have from the past, yet they keep with the tradition of bastardizing the ones they already have.

Both of you make good points about Mario Kart Wii as both complaints are valid. After you've dealt with the frustrating tedium of the constant power-up barrage and worked so hard to unlock a new character, it sucks pretty hard to find out it's Baby Luigi or Dry Bowser. Surely there were more characters in the pool to choose from.

I've made the comment before on here...but it would be an awesome throwback if they brought back Tatanga the alien or Stanley (Mario's bastard son).

So, now on the correct thread:
Can anyone who owns/has played the game tell me how many different power-ups and/or items are there? It may seem like a stupid question, and it probably is, but it bothers me I can't seem to find the answer just by looking at screenshots and videos. All I see are super mushrooms, fire flowers, the penguin suit and the bizarre gyro-propeller-thingie.
Anyways, I think I'll be getting it next month =)

Tatanga, a combination of Ta-Ta's and Tanga. Sounds like a good time.

Tatanga was awesome
If Super Mario Land wasn't a hit (talk about a hard game), we might not have seen the rise of Super Mario Land 2, which gave us Wario.
Yet, Tatagna must've flown away to another "Galaxy", he doesn't have the same persistance that Bowser has...which kinda sucks since I get tired of Bowser always being the top boss in all these platformers.
