Superman-
All star superman is amazing plan and simple, though avoid Frank millers All star batman and robin like superaids.
The Death of superman story is pretty good I thought though others may disagree, I got the collections and I really enjoyed them.
Jla- the nail is really entertaining too
Spider-man-
As Jeebus said Reign is great, though very dark.
In the complete opposite direction is Spiderman loves Mary Jane, it's a bit girly and silly at parts but the art is beautiful, it's sort of a my so called life type of story following mary jane.

X-men-

the first paper back is $2 used and the collection of the first run is $18 used so it's worth checking out
Exiles-
Think quantam leap meets sliders with superheroes. Don't bother with new exiles.

The work of Brian Wood, Daniel Clowes, and Harvey Pekar can not be missed either, especially Local, Ghost World, and American Splendor respectively.

Speaking of Brian Wood, Northlanders is really good, though very violent, vulgar, and perverse.

Batman stuff: Hush, The Dark Knight Returns, No Man's Land
Also, the X-Men story is The Dark Phoenix Saga, dunno why I left the word out.
As for Spidey, Ultimate Spider-Man 1-100ish is really good and, really, is the reason the Ultimate universe was successful. In the time I've been reading, Spider-Man is a book that's been consistently good (Except for a few months immediately following Brand New Day that we won't talk about) but no particular arcs stick out in my mind.

I am not sure if you wanted thoughts on manga, but I am including them with comics.

Rurouni Kenshin - There are 28 books in the series, so it may not be the best idea as a first choice in manga, but it is fantastic. Especially if you like Samurai.

SGT Frog - This one requires a little knowledge of Japan and some sub cultures, and some of the sexploitation is a little off putting at times, and it has got on way too damn long. Still, one of the funnest series of sci-fi comedies ever written in my eyes.

Hellsing - Still my favorite series of all time. There is 10 books, each about $13, so that may be a little much. Still, there is no words to describe how much I loves this series. If yo get a chance to read one, do so, then make your choice on whether or not you want to buy it.

As for anime:

Trigun - A really good series, balances comedy and action very well, and gets quite emotional near the end. An anime everyone should watch before they die.

Cowboy Bebop - Still thought of as one of the best anime of all time. I don't agree with that, but it is still a great series.

Samurai Champloo - I got a lot more into this than Cowboy Bebop. While Cowboy Bebop is Jazz meets Sci-fi, Champloo is hip-hop meets Samurai. Both are still must watch series.

Gin Tama - Sci-Fi samurai comedy. If that sentence interested you at all, you should probably look this series up. Might want to pick up a gist of other anime though, as it makes a tons of references.

Also, anything by Miyazaki. Seriously, anything.

Jeebus, I thought Ultimate X-men was pretty good too it and Ultimate spidey were my first comics I read regularly.

Ultimate X-men started off really well, but it went all over the place. Likewise, Ultimate Fantastic Four was great when it started out, the the Crossover story arc was so great it spawned like 6 miniseries so far! Then Mike Carey took over the book, and it all fell to shit.

If you are going to be buying graphic novels you would be doing yourself a disservice if you did no pick up : Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt, Spider-Man: Death of the Stacys, and Infinity Gauntlet

TPBs are those books that you see in borders and barnse and noble that are basically an entire story arc or whatnot compiled into one book for convenience. Kingdom Come is fantastic (if you're into that)
so is the current Batman run (reborn: 150 starts here I think)
Red Robin, Batgirl, Allstar Superman, Green Arrow

Much appreciated Kojjiro. I may very well check out the current Batman and Superman. Possibly Green Arrow too.

If it makes you feel better I discovered the new run of Batwoman in Detective Comics on my own, and instantly fell in love with it, so I'm really enjoying that one. Year One and Gothic are officially added to my list of things to look for.

Totally agree with this, like the first 30 issues or so were pretty good, then everything started to get all over the place and seemed rushed. There were some other Ultimate story arcs I liked such as Ultimate Vision, also Ultimate Iron Man was pretty well written IMO. In fact I think I like the Tony Stark origin story from the Ultimate series a bit more than the original canon version, its way more science-fictiony, which is fitting for a character such as Iron Man.

Also, despite feeling dishonest about it, the internet can be a great resource when trying to find some of those hard to find comics. Cool

a lot of great recommendations.

if you want to read something thats fun w/out being about superheroes, try picking up The Life & Times of Scrooge McDuck. and its Addendum. its lighthearted, silly, well written, and rather whimsical.

lately, i been buying the Carl Barks' collections from amazon, and those old stories are also good fun

good suggestions on anime. I myself, tend to like the 80's and 90's stuff as I was a lot more into anime in the 90's and i could be wrong, but it seemed like more stand alone movies were being made back then rather than large on-going series that you get now.

One not mentioned that kicks a considerable amount of ass is Ergo Proxy.

Hey I was gonna recommend FLCL but then I remember that this thread was in Reading not Television, does FLCL have a mangoe, or does that guy who did it have something similar? Because if so you should probably read it. Confused

Also, there is a manga, if you can find it. I just know it exists, but have never seen it in person.

Ultimate Iron Man was great though, I almost wanna see another Ultimate Iron Man story arc penned by him.
