Actually, Japan doesn't have it on VC, it's only available as a demo on SSBB.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as if we'll ever get EarthBound on VC, what with all the copyright-infringing music or whatever coupled with NOA's apathy toward EB fans. I say just emulate it.
EDIT: just realized how old this thread is. I hope you've played EarthBound by now, Thunderhorse!

Ah. I heard about the demo and assumed it meant that Japan got the game on VC. I have yet to play it, but I have played Mother 3, and it is amazing, so I will be playing Earthbound soon.

I'm midway through Chapter 4 of Mother 3, and despite the major gameplay improvements, I still prefer EarthBound by a long shot. I dunno, EB was more lighthearted and goofy, while Mother 3 tries too hard to be emotional.

The only emotional part that got to me was the end of the first chapter. The lack of emotiveness on the sprites killed what messages could have been there for me. I think I tried too hard to find a connection and turned up nothing.
