What's the game about? The aptly named official website for the game -- worldscollide.com -- perfectly describes this crossover fighter. Characters from the DC Comics universe fly into the fighting game world to challenge a selection of the best-known Mortal Kombat fighters. It features a classic Mortal Kombat fighting system that returns to what Senior Designer John Edwards describes as being close to that of fan-favorite MK2. In general, this equates to less reliance on complex combos and more emphasis on a face-to-face fighting experience. Free run (the ability to move in and out of the screen in three dimensions) won't be on the D-pad -- in fact, the team is toying with not including it at all. If they do end up putting it in, it won't be a primary control method; they want this game to feel more like the 2D arcade brawlers of old. This also puts the jump and duck commands on the corresponding up and down buttons on the D-pad...just like the good old days.
What's new for E3? E3 gave journalists their first hands-on time with six of the game's characters: three from each side. Of note, the attack buttons have changed somewhat to accommodate the addition of superheroes. Instead of two punch and two kick attacks, you now simply have four attack buttons. In many cases, these will indeed translate back to the punches and kicks, but for some of the DC characters, they will be repurposed to other attack variants. Other adjustments for the DC cast include the good-guy-accomodating "brutalities," which will take the place of the series' trademark fatalities. Don't worry, though -- DC villains and MK characters will still perform fatalities. Superman's brutality was in this demo, and it was plenty over-the-top: Superman pounded his opponent into the ground until only his head was sticking out.
What's our take? The best Mortal Kombat games struck a sweet spot between being hardcore fighters and over-the-top button-mashers. From this first look at Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, it looks to be aimed squarely at that point. While it requires some moves that require technical inputs along the lines of down-forward-X, they don't require the precision execution of a more technical game. Everyone willing to memorize the inputs should be able to pull off their character's favorite moves. And it's plenty satisfying pulling off these moves. Sound probably has a lot to do with that, as almost every strike gets some sort of dramatic "thud" audio effect, but the visible damage on the characters (like black eyes and bloody cuts) also helps convey the violence. These battle marks break the visual look a little right now, though, because they're not quite as polished as the rest of the character models.
It's obvious the developers are trying to emulate the feel of old arcade fighters. The characters dominate the screen and sport aggressive stances. The fighting action stays attack-oriented and flows quickly thanks to the elimination of the longer combo moves. A couple of other things help keep the action intense. Both the close kombat and freefall kombat (and yes, the incorrect spelling is intentional) use a quick-time button-pressing minigame wherein the attacker hits attack buttons as their icon lights up and the defender tries to counter by keeping pace.
On the other end of the spectrum, they've also included a technique called promoves on some of the character's best maneuvers. Promoves add powerful secondary effects to an attack if you can manage to pull off a more technical set of inputs right after doing the initial move. This definitely holds the potential to add some depth to the game. It seems like a good compromise to provide serious fans a way to learn that little bit extra without making the whole game exclusive to "professional" fighters.
And to have all this taking place in familiar cities like Chicago and San Francisco only sweetens the deal. We definitely would like to have seen more, but what we did see has us plenty excited. |

The game needs Heath Ledger. Not the Joker from Dark Knight, actual Heath Ledger. Like, a tag team of Scorpion and Heath Ledger. It would be awesome.
