I've been spending quite some time now working on a full game redesign of Super Mario Bros. for the NES. And now, it's complete. Granted I'll probably go back and change some things around, but right now it's fully functional and playable.
The name of the game is Super Mario Zero. It starts off much harder than the original, but it's not mind-numbingly impossible and unfair like some other hacks. Eventually though, it does get incredibly hard, but I imagine I could beat it with enough effort (even though I made the last few levels fairly insane). I do recommend plenty of saves states in the later levels, at least at first.
Anyway, if you're interested, you can download the game here:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/h6hmnc
I imagine it should work on most emulators.

Without using save states I got to level 1-3 with 18 lives left. I couldn't get passed those platforms a single time. Tomorrow I'll try it with save states.
Fuck those moles.

I plan to, but only when I'm satisfied with a finalized version of the game.

Oh yeah, I'm working on a smw hack. It'll be what's known as a "vanilla" hack with one or two exceptions: I'll have the blocks you break from below like in SMB3, and maybe an SMB3-style hammer bro. if I can get it to work right. I'm new to ROM hacking, so it might take a while to complete, however.
By the way, what hacking utilities did you use for this, Not Sure? Awesome hack so far, except I can't progress in 2-1 (which is my fault, not yours).

Got it just now, I'll try it later when I have time.
By the way, anyone know of a good SMB3 editor?

Spoiler alert:
Jump on the first buzzy beetle and knock him off the vertical block stack and down to the lower platform. Stop him there, and knock him under and follow him to kill the koopa. After that, get the mushroom by knocking it off the brick. With the mushroom, break the other bricks to reveal a star. Lose your mushroom power-up from the piranha plant, and then retrieve the star. Then run through the mini maze fast enough to get by the enemies and into the latter half of the stage.

I used SMB Utility for level design, Tile Layer Pro to edit some tiles, and SMB Title Editor to make the title.

Alright, I got up to 7-4 last night after about, er, 3 hours of playing? Something like that. Then I was too tired and too hot to continue, so I gave up for the night. I continue my significant quest later today.

It's hard, but I've played worse. I think playing a huge amount of Mario World hacks got me used to having to do stupid bullshit things to progress.
I savestate when I remember to basically.

I updated the link with the newest version which includes:
A completely different second half of 8-3
Changes to the Final Bowser fight
Warps to Worlds 6 and 7 in addition to 5 at the second warp zone
A secret shortcut to skip the falling platforms at the beginning of 1-3 and 5-3
Some other minor changes
Now it should hopefully be finalized.
