So the new Magic promo dealy From the Vault: Exiled has been announced. It features 15 cards that were at some point in time banned or restricted, and possibly still are. They're premium cards, so they don't have to follow the reserved list. The qualifications are:
They were banned or restricted for power reasons (Sorry, no flip cards or ante cards)
At least some of them need to have been printed in the new card frame before (Don't know how many)
Here's my guess for what the 15 cards are:
Balance
Land Tax
Gush
Mind Over Matter
Time Spiral
Mind Twist
Recurring Nightmare
Yawgmoth's Bargain
Burning Wish
Fork
Channel
Regrowth
Black Vise
Lotus Petal
Tolarian Academy
A lot of them aren't overly exciting, but there's still some decent stuff that's played in legacy that don't have foil versions yet (Academy, Lotus Petal).
Balance is definitely in from the promo art
Black Vise I'm saying is 100% in because The Rack just had a foil version in Timeshifted, and because it was recently unrestricted
Channel I'm saying is 100% in because it's THE banned card. I still get people coming into the store asking me if channel/fireball is still banned.
Curious what people think, and if they have other ideas as to what might be in the set.

Is it going to be for organizers only? I know those are guesses, but I'm still jealous.

Nope. Allegedly all organizers will have the chance to buy one (I assume at MSRP), but much like FTV: Dragons, it will be available to retailers in very, very limited numbers. Hopefully our distributor won't screw us over again

I'm gonna guess Time Vault.
It's got vault in the name and it's the most controversial card ever printed.
Not gonna happen, but I'd cream myself if it did.

If Tolarian Academy ends up being in it I want one, but otherwise pass.

Time Vault is already a $200 card, so there's no way they'd make a super limited run of foil ones.
And BZ, there can be more in there besides Academy geared at you. Of course, I feel this is aimed more at me and Syd, but there's a lot of cards that have been banned or restricted, and I'm sure a number of them are ones you'd be interested in. For example:
Tinker for your artifact deck
Maze of Ith for...anything
Mystical Tutor for your counter deck
etc..

Yeah but see unlike you, I don't want to play with a majority of ridiculous cards that not everyone has access to. These cards are banned/restricted for a reason, mostly because they make other players hate you when you use them. You should learn something from that.
Plus this is different from the Dragons set; I wanted the Dragon set because I planned on using pretty much all of the cards in it. Exiled, even though we don't know exactly what it's going to contain, is far less interesting to me. Now if it were Slivers like we were speculating...

Dunno when, but slivers WILL happen. As for these cards being unfair, these are cards that WERE considered too powerful, but aren't anymore (Things like Black Vise and the mirage tutors which are unrestricted now...btw Syd, those are indeed unrestricted). Weird though since Balance is still restricted, but whatever, lol.

UPDATE!!!!
Apparently, someone on the MTG cruise (If you don't know what it is, don't ask. Gayest idea ever) someone got the information out of the R&D team that every From the Vault was going to have a spoiler card for the set coming out, which means one of two things:
1. They are printing a card in the set in October (Codenamed "Live") that they already know is so powerful it will need to be banned or restricted in vintage or
2. One of the cards in this FTV will be reprinted in Live.
I'm guessing #2 is far more likely, and I think that's potentially even more exciting than getting a new card early.

This is a choice they're making, however, and not actually due to the official policy.
Of course, if the cards on the reserved list are off limits, this will be far less exciting. I'd much rather be getting Yawgmoth's Bargain, Cursed Scroll, and Time Spiral than Aether Vial, Vault of Whispers, and Ponder.

I could see Mana Crypt coming back, since it was never meant to be good.
When the fuck was Dark Ritual banned? I'll fucking kill a fool if Dark Ritual makes the cut. That fool will probably be MaRo, regardless of whether or not he works for Wizards anymore.
Unless they're complete assholes, it goes without saying that no ante cards will make the cut. The Reserved List confuses me. Metalworker is reserved and Mishra's Workshop isn't? Ok, whatever.
My guesses are:
Thawing Glaciers
Zuran Orb
Balance
Necropotence
Eh.... I dunno. I don't feel like coming up with 15. I'd like to make a case for Chaos Orb though. Is it a $100+ dollar card? Yes. But it's also completely uncompetitive, completely awesome, and a fan favorite.

The reserved list a total clusterfuck, don't try to figure out why things are or aren't banned.
And Dark Ritual was banned in extended fo the last few years it would have been legal. They JUST sent out foil ones to judges though, so they'd be out of their fucking minds to put it in the set. If they do though, it will be the same artwork that we got.
#edit: Sorry, Chaos Orb wasn't banned for being too powerful. The flip cards, ante cards, and shahrazard don't meet the qualifications.

Full list:
- Balance (New art)
- Berserk (New art)
- Channel
- Gifts Ungiven (Old art)
- Goblin Lackey (New art)
- Kird Ape
- Lotus Petal (Old art)
- Mystical Tutor (Old art)
- Necropotence (New art)
- Sensei's Divining Top
- Serendib Efreet
- Skullclamp
- Strip Mine
- Tinker (New art)
- Trinisphere
The new arts actually all look really good, even berserk. The old Berserk artwork is classic and the back of the token card looks awful, but the full art on the card is really nice.
BZ, I assume you're not interested since only the Lackey would appeal to you?

Kird ape is a copout. They may as well have included Juggernaut.
I had no idea Serendib Efreet was ever banned/restricted...
I really like the inclusion of Trinisphere. It's a good example of a card that isn't a problem in most formats, but seriously disruptive in one.

I'm not a big fan of Trinisphere. For me, Trinisphere is this set's Form of the Dragon: I will NEVER play it. Kird Ape is this set's Dragon Whelp: it's not worth a damn thing and it's stupid that they printed it, but at least I can use it.

I'd probably never play it either. I just think it's a good inclusion into the set.

It said Kird Ape is a ridiculous choice, which it is. The fact that there's already an FNM Kird Ape makes it especially retarded.
