I just gave this a thought. Without girls in fighting games would they be anywhere near where they are now?
Chun Li had TONS of panty shots in The World Warrior. Then you pretty much had an avalanche of hot female fighters. Cammy, Sakura.. Nina, Julia, Anna, Christie from Tekken. Taki, Sophitia, Cassandra, Ivy from Soul Calibur. Sarah from Virtua Figther. All the Dead or Alive girls.
The panty shot revolutionized fighting games

but it's not true.
chun-li had no panty shots until tehy gave her a fireball in turbo, and even then, by the time super rolled around where they cahnged the fireball's animation, they toned it down.
