It could happen if you are a retailer in New York.

Making game sales a felony is the latest idea out of a New York legislature so bent on wasting time that they've authored dozens of anti-video game bills in the last month. The Constitutional issues have been brought up in other reports, but New York GameStop employees (among others) should really be paying attention. Why?

New York has a "3 Strikes" rule, which was upheld in 2005.

While the law does give some leeway for the sentencing court, it theoretically allows a judge to put someone away for life for selling a copy of, say, Gears of War to a 16 year old who looks 18. Yes, selling a game could come with a life sentence under the new law.

This is just poor governance. However, to go as far as to make it a felony borders on lunacy. It would only further contribute to prison overcrowding, among other things. Moreover, providing alcohol or tobacco to a minor is generally a misdemeanor and a fine in most states, and there is no penalty for selling a copy of Saw or Hostel to a minor. In any event, the game developer and game retailer attorneys will likely be busy in New York in the coming months considering the determination the New York legislature is showing on this non-issue.

Selling a M rated game to a minor, a felony??? Not a misdemnor, that usually carries a fine and little to no jail time, but a full fledged, off ya go and don't drop the soap felony.

Yeah, I can see that earn you props in the pen.

Inmate A : "What are you here for?"
Inmate B: "I killed three people with a chainsaw. What about you?"
Inmate A: "I raped six nuns with their own crusifixes."
Inmate B: "What about that skinning guy over there?"
Inmate A: "Oh him? He sold a copy of Resident Evil to a 13 year old kid."
Inmate B: "What a sick bastard."

*twitch* This is horrible. Why not go the whole 9 yards; movies, music, books, anything. And after that, THE INTERNET! Let's go ahead and limit people who are under 18 from doing ANYTHING. Even driving. And revoke any licenses of 16 and 17 year olds. NOTE TO WHOMEVER IS PASSING THIS LEGISLATION: NOT ALL PEOPLE UNDER 13/18 ARE LITTLE IDIOTS WHO NEED TO BE SHELTERED FROM EVERYTHING BY REMOVING FREEDOMS. It's something I call "Ageism". A bit is good, like putting kids in the right classes, but not this much.

Syd or Valde need to make a articles on all the stupid video game politics things.

I seriously want to know what's wrong with people. Oh, sure, rapists can get off after 3 years, but if you sell a copy of Mortal Kombat to a 17 year old, your ass will be in jail for so long that when you get out you'll be older than Sub Zero's MK3 look.

Whoever wrote that did a great job of making it sound like the law was already set in stone.

It'll never happen, don't worry about it, kids.

If I was going to do something on game politics, it would be on old school game politics, like why NHL '94 didn't have blood and fights or why certain games never made it onto to various systems.

If you want current stuff, there's a site devoted entirely to game politics: http://www.gamepolitics.com/

Hey, the 2nd half, including the coverstaion, was mine!

The first half is from Law of the Game, which I found through an article HERE.

I would have used the Inquirer's article, but then I have to translate out all of the English slang, that average Sydlexians wouldn't understand. (No offense to those that do.)

That's what I was thinking. You or Valde would NEVER EVER do articles on recent things.

EDIT: Wow, I was stupid back then.

This is why I'm happy not to live in New York anymore.

Then again, if the New York legislative brach is doing this, the Flordian legislature probably already made something twice as bad.

Born and raised. And, I have no plans on ever leaving. I love it here. Though, I may defect to Canada, not becuase I don't like Oregon, but because I am really begining to hate the USA, and all the BS going on at home (Stupid Laws) and abroad (Iraq, Policing the world when no one asked us too, and pissing off every other country.)

I'm alergic to THC. Serious.

I tried pot once as a teenager and my throat swelled shut and I had to be rushed to the hospital. I told my mom I got stung in the neck by a bee. (My only other serious alergy.) I told the doctor the truth though. Gotta love Doctor/Patient confidentiality. Wink

That's actually pretty lucky, depending on how you look at it. I'm allergic to smoke. I can be around secondhand smoke, but I can't smoke at all.

Briefly back on topic...We have it set-up in the computer system wether or not that childs parents have given permission to purchasae M rated games.

Back off topic I have extreme reactions to Static Electricty. Mostly when I go to get out of the car and touch the door and shock the shit out of myself. Thats not the extreme reaction, it's when my skin turns purple and I lose feeling that it starts to get out of hand.

If I even see a small amount of blood (in real life), I throw up. I guess that counts as an allergy...?

I think I'm the only American who wants to move to Canada for reasons other than disliking America.
