Thoughts? The PS3 seems to be this generation's Dreamcast.

I dunno if that's a fair comparison, at least not at this point. The Dreamcast had a lot of great titles like Skies of Arcadia, Space Channel 5, Shenmue, the first ports of MvC and MvC2, and the only home version ofSoul Calibur. PS3 has yet to deliver any titles that people will look back on fondly when/if the system officially fails. Also, the Dreamcast actually WASN'T failing when Sega decided to exit the console wars. When Sega announced it was halting support for the Dreamcast, it came as a major shock to Dreamcast owners and third party developers, as the company was going to end its fiscal year in the black for the first time since the Genesis days. Meanwhile, Sony's gaming division is not doing so great right now. The PS3 hardware is being sold a loss and it isn't selling well, leaving them in a bad spot. Sony is more than making up for the losses in its other divisions, but still.

It's a race between the 360 and the Wii, with the PS3 being the 400lb kid wheezing in a dust cloud. The only way the PS3 will win out in the end is if they somehow stop selling at a loss (requiring either cheaper hardware or an even higher price), and get some really awesome killer app games.

GTA IV isn't going to save the PS3, not when it's already confirmed for the 360. And with Rockstar's Manhunt 2 getting a Wii release, it's not unreasonable to think we might see it on the Wii somewhere down the line.
As for Final Fantasy XIII, meh. I know, I know, people still love the series. But when I saw commercials for games like X-2 and XII, they looked stupid. I'd take I, V, IV, VI, or VII over that crap any day of the week.

As far as I'm concerned, the 360 is winning. They got a year's head-start, and they've got the largest number of good games. Also, it's 200 bucks cheaper than the PS3, and, comparing the graphics, that's a major plus.
The Wii needs more systems to stock on before it can do any better than it's doing right now.
As for the PS3, I've lose almost all hope for it. Unless they release an Einhander sequel out of nowhere, I'm not going to buy it anytime soon.

Whether or not the 360 is currently winning is debatable. They do have the most systems in households right now, but that is largely due to the headstart. Since it's debut, the Wii has vastly outsold its competitors and shortages still abound in many areas. I know quite a few people who are still Wii-less due to these shortages and Nintendo recently announced they would be ramping up production to meet the needs of consumers.
But in terms of which system currently has the best game library, the 360 wins, hands down.

I never was a unanimous fan boy for any particular system, but nintendo has always been my system of choice until PS2. I love the Wii, and I like Gears of War for Xbox 360, other than that I really haven't seen anything I have to have for Xbox. I'm interested to see if/when Sony starts bringing out its internal games, i.e. Gran Turismo, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, WipeOut, God Of War, Kill Zone, Jumping Flash 3 (Crosses fingers).
All of which are very successful franchises. It should be very interesting to see what will become of the $600 box of Cancer Fighting goodness. Also I'm currently addicted to Trauma Center Second Opinion and if anyone needs any shards of glass removed from your lungs, I'm your man, I got an S rank on that one.
Is the PS3 next Dreamcast? Ggood god no. But they just might be if they can get some good games out. Which they will in due time.

You mean Jumping Flash 4. That was already released in 1999 only in Japan as Robbit Mon Dieu.

It also come down to people like me. I have no interest in a Wii, just like I didn't have any interest in the Gamecube. I would love to get my hands on a PS3, but I cannot afford the $800 to invest. (The Console, plus a game or two, and a second controller.)
There are many people who would love a PS3, they are just out of reach for most of us.
If Sony doesn't find a solution to this problem, then the PS3 will more likely become the next Neo Geo, then the next Dreamcast.
The toy that everyone wanted, but only the rich could afford...

More like the next 3DO, the toy that no one could afford, but luckily it sucked ass anyway.

Damn it PirateMan, I came in here ready to defend the PS3 a bit.
I was gonna go on about how its still too early to judge the PS3. The big games have yet to come out, and that maybe like many things with a lot of mass, it would take time to get going but could not be stopped when it did.
Not that I'm really excited about it, but that its not been out long enough to try and predict the future.
But here I see the defender of the PS3 is rude. My enthusiasm is gone.
I'll stick with the Wii, which holds promise of new games that can't be played on other systems and the strong temptation of bringing back arcade goodness to the living room.
If not the Wii, I'll go with the Xbox 360, with its live arcade and its beautiful exclusive content that is not halo also promising new thrills and cheap nostalgia like the Wii but with better graphics and a less novel control scheme.

Before 360 was out everyone said it would end up like Dreamcast, but now that doesn't seem to be the case. There are a ton of simialarities. Or however you spell that.

Singularities. The PS3 disrupts temporal physics, don't buy it.

I think a better comparison to the PS3 currently would be the Sega Saturn. Both launched at ridiculously high prices, causing consumers to choose the cheaper (and similarly capable) alternative, i.e. Xbox 360 or PlayStation, respectively. Both could potentially deliver amazing visuals not possible on rival platforms because of non-standard tech, i.e., cell processor and quadrilateral geometry, respectively, but are way too hard to program and develop for because of this, so the graphics end up not meeting expectations or even exceeding those of their rival consoles.

Yeah. Most PS3 games out there have graphics that are either comparable or worse than the 360. Especially that Gundam PS3 game. Those graphics are horrible! (And this is like Bomberman bashing a Twinbee game, so it has to be true!)

I'm just hoping that Lair is pretty good. Or Two Worlds when it comes out for PS3. Something, at least, so I can suggest a game for the PS3 that isn't a sports game or a FPS.
I can't suggest stuff that I rarely play myself, as I can never answer the questions that follow the suggestions.
"Are the graphics good?" I don't care.
"How are the controls?" Similar to the last game.
"Does the 50-yard line explode with awesomeness when you cross it?" Sure. Just buy the game and leave.
Madden NFL '94 is the last madden game I've truly played.

In terms of "arrived before its time, market and developers weren't quite ready for it", yeah.
The difference being, Dreamcast actually had good games.

I don't really like the PS3, but I want one really, really, bad for two reasons: Devil May Cry 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4. No way I'm missing out on those two.

Yeah, me too. Thank god DMC4 is going to the system I have. I hope MGS4 will do the same but I bet the PS3 one will be better technically.
