From IGN:
UK, March 28, 2007 - Finally the dreams of SEGA and Nintendo fans come true as news hits that Mario and Sonic are set to star side by side in a new game for Wii and DS, based on the 2008 Olympics.
SEGA made the historic announcement this morning and confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (as it's known) is due for release this Christmas. The game's currently in development by SEGA Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project. The title will be published by SEGA of America later this year.
Players compete in events around venues based on official locations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Featuring a supporting cast of recognizable faces from the world of both Sonic and Mario, players can choose from a range of characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, and Tails. More characters will be announced at a future date.

SEGA has been talking with Nintendo about Sonic in Brawl. I'm going to take this as a sign that the talks go well.
Although Mario is screwed in a footrace, and Sonic is fucked in the long jump.

The chances of Sonic being in Brawl are not great. Maybe he'll make it into the next game.

For awhile, spambots were hitting and the forums and reviving dead topics with their normal OMG VIAGRA & PORN!!! bullshit. When I deleted the spam posts, I locked the threads because I figured maybe there were keywords that made them pick those threads.

I agree. However, the E.G.G.M.A.N. song from Sonic Adventure 2 is awesome.

I never got why they switched over to Eggman. (I'm guessing to be more kid-friendly), but I like Robotnik better. On a side note, when I was in the 2nd grade I called him Dr. Robo-tink.

From what I understand, his name technically still is Robotnik but Sonic just calls him Eggman. If I recall correctly, in the Sonic Adventure 2 plot, Eggman's grandfather built the giant space cannon that Eggman uses and the grandfather is actually referred as Dr. Something Or Other Robotnik.

There we go.
And Eggman's full name is Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
I had some shitty Sonic comic at one point that supposedly showed Dr. Robotnik's origin. Originally he was a kindly scientist named Dr. Kintobor and then one day when Sonic was visiting him, he accidentally dropped and a hard_boiled_egg on Kintobor's computer, electrocuting the good doctor and mutating him into the evil Dr. Robotnik. Yeah... I hope to God that's not official canon.

I think I had that comic. That was the one that showed that Sonic was brown until he broke the sound barrier and turned blue.

The thing with Sonic is there are different continuities.
Sonic X continuity
SatAM continuity
The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon continuity
Fleetway comics continuity (with psychotic evil Super Sonic)
Archie comics continuity
Sonic Adventure continuity
and lastly the original games continuity

I don't think it is. I'm pretty sure it's the same one (Dr. Ivo Robotnik) from the other Sonic games.

That reminds me of Archie Sonic #50 which also had an origin story. Gay as hell. The less we know about Julian, the better.

Since this thread started about Nintendo and SEGA doing sports:
"In Europe, Nintendo will release a sequel to the 2005 Gamecube classic Super Mario Strikers. Mario Strikers: Charged Football is a five on five, all out, soccer face-off complete with Nintendo’s stable of unique characters, power ups and special items. More than that, it will be the first Wii game to allow players to take the competitive action online.
Teams will be made up of five players, two of which can be controlled by humans and each team will have a leader with access to super abilities (for example, Princess Peach can freeze the competition for while by whipping out a camera and taking a snapshot and Mario can grow to mammoth proportions). The matches will be competitive and will include plenty of dirty fouls. However, each time a player is fouled they will be given special items (like red turtle shells) to serve up some pay back to the opposing team.
The game will have several modes including "Road to Striker Cup," a single player mode where footballers compete in seventeen stadiums for three cups, "Domination" mode where players can take on their friends in a quick round of football fun and there will be ranked and unranked online matches.
Mario Strikers: Charged Football is expected to retail in Europe for 50 Euros or £35."
