I'm pretty sure just about everyone here (who lives in the US anyways) has owned at least something that was from Radio Shack. I mean I grew up with Radio Shack R/C cars, walkie-talkies and the like.
Interestingly, reading around, Sprint is going to buy about half a stores, and turn them into Sprint stores with Sprint selling the phones, and Radio Shack selling the accessories. It has also been rumored that Amazon is going to buy up a bunch of Radio Shack location, and start B&M Amazon stores.

I can't say I'm that upset about it. I've just never felt like I could get something there that I couldn't get anywhere else. Their going-out-of-business sales have been insane, though; the same camera battery charger I got there for $10 was $35 at Best Buy.

When was the last time you bought ANYTHING from Radio Shack? I personally can't remember buying a single thing there, ever. I was given gifts from there, surely, but only those crappy, no name R/C cars that break almost immediately

I went into a radio shack once to see if they had an SD card reader. Turns out they didn't sell electronics that people want these days, just stuff like R/C cars and clock radios.

And cell phones taking up precious space...
While I will miss Radio Shack only for its presence in "Short Circuit 2", it's downfall I think was inevitable. The cables I've needed and would've gotten there are more available and cheaper elsewhere. I would still stop in at the Radio Shack at the mall because being by electronics just makes me happy - but I never did buy anything there.

Now I don't know where I'm going to get discrete electronic components and soldering tools in a hurry anymore. I don't like waiting for shipping.

I have a tool-box (literally a cardboard box) in my closet that's about half stuff from Radioshack. The soldering iron I learned to solder on, a shitton of wire, tools, etc. That said, I'm glad virtually every Radioshack went out of business a few months ago. The employees at every Radioshack I've been to in 3 states were dicks. Enjoy asking your dates for gas money, jerkoffs.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm only gonna miss the name. Pretty much everything they sell I can get at a place called Micro Center, a larger, better electronics store which I'm just now finding out was founded by 2 former Radio Shack employees. Now that's interesting.
There's also plenty of local electronic stores in my area that have excellent service, including one where you can get your computer fixed on the same day for a very good price. I'm glad New Jersey's a high-tech state.

Back when I lived in a suburb, this was absolutely the truth, and I'm sure this bankruptcy will sting for hobbyists in small towns across the country.

Same here. It was the only place in town where I could buy a RCA plug or 1/4 Jack plug to solder on speaker wire to make my own audio cable and adapters. Now, I'll have to order that stuff online and wait. I much prefer, taking a 10 minute drive, getting what I need, and finishing my projects on the same day.

Clever. This is clever.
I don't think I've purchased anything from Radio Shack for at least a decade. We have (had?) one in my area but the markup was ridiculous.

Micro Center is also one of the few stores in the US that carries Bawls, which makes it thirty times superior to Radio Shack.

We have Frys here on the West Coast, and it is almost the same thing as Micro Center from what I can tell. A massive warehouse sized building of all things electric & electronic. However, since they are so massive, they only really put in one per state. So sadly my two closest ones are 61 miles south (Down in Oregon) or 121 miles north (Here in Washington.)

I reckon I'll miss it about as much as I miss Blockbuster. Probably less, actually, since I actually gave Blockbuster a modicum of business.

Back when I lived in California I used to go to the Fry's in San Jose a lot. The building was really cool as well, it was like a big Mayan pyramid.
Also, for some reason my local Radio Shack is still going strong and does not seem to be going out of business. Maybe it's independently owned? Not sure, but it isn't too bad. No annoying employees bothering you about cell phones. It's right next to the coffee shop so I usually browse for components for my projects when I go out for a coffee. It is also the most modern looking Radio Shack I have ever seen.

Fuck yeah, man! The one off Hamilton in Santa Clara was the one I went to all the time, I think it's the same one you're talking about. They all have different themes, I think. Fry's is the shit. Where else can you buy porno, a taser, and a video card all in one purchase?
It's a shame we have nothing like that out here. The closest we have is TigerDirect, which is off the shittiest and most congested road in history and doesn't have nearly as much charisma as Fry's. In fact, it's pretty much a warehouse.

Up until now I had thought TigerDirect was just a catalog. Didn't know they had brick-and-mortar locations.

Used to live in Santa Clara? I lived there about two blocks down the street from the Winchester Mystery House and used to work at Valley Fair at the EB (with Mudcrush whom was mentioned in the too many games thread.) before then while going to Cupertino High/De Anza the FuncoLand/Eletronics Ect. attached to the Barnes and Noble off Stevens Creek blvd., the Rasputin Records store in Cameron Park and small chain store called Digital Stuff that happened to be a front for a Chinese drug dealing/human trafficking/porn ring that ended up being seized and shut down by the FBI (quite awkward walking in to open the store that day I can tell you for sure). Also would hang out almost nightly between 15th and 21st streets in San Jose with my Filipino pals. Was fun times...
Take the Halloween flashlight tour of the Winchester Mystery House if you are ever in that area.
That whole episode was great. I really like this show and its proven itself to be quite an entity for change on the topics it has reported on.
Another segment from that same episode:

This segment also contributes to the arguments made in my legalization of pot thread...

I used to live in Monterey. Would travel up that way for better shopping in San Jose area. About a 45 minute to an hour drive north from Monterey.

Radio Shack, and other types of hardware stores, are some of the few major types of corporations that just do not put mom&pop joints out of business. I can go to a local hardware store, and find literally any tool or piece of mechanical/electrical equipment for a reasonable price. If I go to Radio Shack, they will have literally every part or tool except the one I actually need, and won't be able to order it in for me. If I do find it, it's after finding it buried away and for 5 times the price of local shops.
I feel like they never really decided on what they were going to be. Do we sell toys? tools? equipment? electronics? software? gimmicky hardware?
Yes, we do, and with massively limited shelf space.

I lived in East San Jose right next to Evergreen Valley College, where I went for my first 60-something units. But I spent most of my time in Santa Clara, Campbell, Cupertino (my uncle lives there, a former Sun Microsystems employee) and downtown. I actually still have a bag from that Rasputin's on my wall, probably my only piece of memorabilia from CA. I also went to that Barnes and Noble quite a lot, as well as Steven's Creek Surplus. By far the most thorough surplus store I've ever visited, despite the complete lack of actual surplus equipment. Small world, I tell ya. Although it is the 10th largest city in the US we're talking about and not Schenechtady, NY.
That's funny that the Chinese human trafficking operation was going down right there, though. I read an article about that in one of my classes.
