Nintendo has chosen not to renew its licensing agreement with Future Publishing (the company that currently produces Nintendo Power) and has no intentions to take over the publication itself, according to insider sources speaking to Ars Technica. A now-deleted tweet from NP staff suggested this was accurate.
Reportedly "difficult to work with," Nintendo is said to have taken no interest in working with Future on expanded online initiatives to strengthen the Nintendo Power brand. Editors and staff members were told that the magazine would be shut down sometime last week and have since begun transitioning to other Future publications, according to Ars Technica's source. |
I really hope they find another publisher or go back to making it themselves. This was the only magazine I ever subscribed to, still have all my old issues.
Truly a sad day.

It is a miracle that they lasted as long as they did, what with online FAQ's and what not.

I had a snarky reply set up for that, but then I realized it could be true and then I'd feel like a total douche.

This makes me sad. I was a childhood subscriber. The day the next Nintendo Power came in the mail was always one of the best days of the month.

No, really, I was under the impression Nintendo Power stopped publishing ages ago, like pre-Gamecube.

I thought so too. Thought the rise of all the internet based gaming resources had killed it off long ago. I know I quit subscribing to gaming magazines when we finally got cable internet around here and all that information was right at my fingertips, guess I assumed everyone else did as well.

Nope. They did outsource the magazine in 2007 though and any staff who were unwilling to relocate (which was either all or most of them) were laid off.
FUN FACT: Sony and Microsoft still have magazines. They are produced by the same company that has been doing Nintendo Power since 2007.

So what I'm getting is that this is less the official death, and more like loping off the zombie's head to it can finally be at peace?

I've been getting Nintendo Power on a normal basis on my own for at least a decade. Before that I got it through my parents.

The same could be said of any tech magazine. We can get this information much faster online than we can from a magazine.
Nintendo Power's biggest strength in its heyday was its ability to preview upcoming first party titles before anyone else. Once Nintendo starting using other venues for that information, the magazine's last vestiges of relevancy were gone.
There's no reason the PlayStation and XBox magazines should stick around much longer, either.

It is a fun read, though. If this is the end, I'll miss it.

When GamePro shut down sometime last year, I knew Nintendo Power wasn't far off...
Paper and ink print may have its limitations compared to the internet's capabilities, but there's nothing quite like having a magazine right there, whether it's in front of you, on the table, in your backpack, in your mailbox or on your lap while using the bathroom.

Well, there was also that, back in the day, video gaming was Nintendo. Yeah, sure, okay, arcades were thriving, and there was always that silly kid that had a Master System that I'm sure actually existed cause we made fun of them. But you played Nintendo, so Nintendo Power was a viable magazine. Even during the bloody 16 Bit Wars, Nintendo Power still covered a good majority of the gaming market.
Once Nintendo fell into the back of the pack, and now there's 3 different consoles plus a bunch of handhelds and PC games and stuff, plus the maturing of the audience, a Nintendo-centric magazine just doesn't have the audience anymore.

I have every issue of Nintendo Power and it will be sad to see it go. It was one of the first things I regularly read, and it even helped me learn new words when I was really young. I was four years old when it first came out.

I have many fond memories of running to my room and reading about the upcoming games and consoles. Sometimes I wish I was still a subscriber, if for nothing else the free extras.

I think the last issue I got was back in '93 or something. I had no idea it was still going. However I was checking the mail for each new issue constantly when I was younger.

It definitely went beyond the Gamecube era. When I posted all those top 20 lists from Nintendo consoles that came from that months issue.

I had it for a little while. I don't have the issues anymore, but I do have the promo vids they sent out for Banjo Kazooie and Star Fox 64. They were pretty bad.

I believe I have the Star Fox 64 one somewhere - and I remember that they made one for Diddy Kong Racing as well.

I haven't read it in probably 20 years, but this saddens me. A piece of my childhoodod will die with NP.

My uncle did software security work for Nintendo at one point, and they gave him this promo/press VHS for the N64. I wonder if it's valuable at all.
