so, how exactly did Obi Wan get more powerful than Darth Vader could ever imagine when he was struck down?
Quote:
Darth Vader: Your powers are weak, old man.
Obi-Wan: You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

all he did was become this blue ghost. and he doesnt do anything w/that power. he just stalks luke. if he was super powerful, he couldve just pulled a Poltergeist & haunted the emperor or Darth Vader.

The actor read the script wrong. It was supposed to be "You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more pasty blue than you could possibly imagine. Razz

Actually..

Okay. I'm not a nerd, but I think what he meant is that his death drove Luke to become powerful enough to defeat Vader, or something like that.

He just meant becoming one with the Force again. Since the Force is all powerful and permeates everything, technically he would be, but it's not really HIM that's powerful per se. Though Obi Wan was especially attuned to the will of the Force so, take it as you will I suppose.

I'm having the worst time trying to figure out if the proper capitalization is the Force or The Force BTW.

I understood it to be that his death would permanently bind him to the force where he could forever guide others. This was somewhat explained at the end of Episode III when Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he will teach him some new stuff.

Why doesn't Vader's lightsaber cut through his robe? Better yet, why does his robe stay behind? Were the rest of his clothes also left behind? Did Obi Wan enter the Force afterlife naked or something? And in the other movies, we see Obi wearing the robe again. Also, I wonder what Vader did with his lightsaber?

I won't sleep until I have the answers.

No good answer on why the robe wasn't slashed. As for it remaining, Jedi who become ghosts tend to do that, pretty sure in ROTJ when Yoda dies, you can see his robes briefly beneath the blanket before they collapse. And Force ghosts usually appear as they saw themselves around the time of their deaths, clothing included. Anakin Skywalker was obviously an exception to this, but I think that was meant to represent how he would have appeared had he stayed on the Light Side up to that point. Also, no idea what Vader did with the lightsaber, something nefarious no doubt. The saber Luke lost on Bespin was found and given to an insane evil clone of him made from the hand he lost there though.

"Yo, Obi."
"Oh shit, it's master!"
"Yo. I got some advice for ya..."
"Yeah? What is it?"
"Kill that Anakin fucker."

When he was flesh and blood he can only be in one place and time, when he's a blue ghost he could probably flit all over the place teaching supporting the good side of the force, possibly by imparting wisdom / secrets to good guys. If Darth had let him live he would have been far less efficient in his work, or something like that..

What BZ and GP said I guess.

If they could go where they pleased, and Qui Gon was able to become a blue ghost, then why didn't he just use his "more powerful than you could possibly imagine" powers to find who the Sith was, then just report that shit to Obi Wan.

I suppose you could say that he didn't learn until at the end of ROTS, which is pretty unconvenient timing on Qui Gon's behalf.

Qui Gon was supposedly the first of the "modern" era Jedi to discover how to project as a force ghost and apparently it took him some time to manage it. And even being dead and semi omnipotent wouldn't have showed him who the Sith lord was or shown him the future of Anakin's fate, doesn't really work like that. Sidious' influence was dampening every Jedi's connection to the Force within an undefined but certainly wide range as well, it wasn't just a case of looking at it from another angle and seeing an obvious answer.

And evil Luke is in the Heir to the Empire trilogy, though I don't think he shows up until at least the second book.

My opinion is that Obi-Wan was just trash talking, like most people do when they are in a fight. Then Vader just owned him. Or it could have been an inside joke between them, since they were old friends.

True, it could have been what he always said to him when they were playing Soul Calibur or something.

"If you strike me down Anakin, especially by ring out you cheap fuck, I will get really pissed and more powerful than you can possibly imagine next round!"

I don't see why not? If Obi Wan was able to follow Luke around, surely Qui Gon could have done the same to Palpatine or any major players who could be considered a Sith, unless you try to shoehorn the idea that Palpatine was so fucking powerful that he was secretly controlling everyone's thoughts and actions. The timing of Qui Gon's transformation is way too convenient to the plot, and only serves as a plot device for the later films, this should've been established in the 2nd movie, so that it would've made sense when Anakin shows up at the end of Jedi.

But to be honest, I really don't give a fuck. It's simple things like this that the audience is never told about, and are just left to assume the best, for convenience. The prequels were terrible, I could be here all day explaining shit, and someone would come along and talk about how things were "explained" off screen or in the EU. No one wins.

Maybe he's just a great, big liar:

Luke: Obi-Wan? Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father.
Obi-Wan: Your father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Luke: "A certain point of view"?
Obi-Wan: Luke, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.
