Can we all agree on Titanic? Did this movie really deserve all it's recognition plus the 11 oscars that went with it? Seriously?

I saw that. I'm surprised no one mentioned Titanic until the very last post.

To each their own. I think he's great as a sidekick, but his silly costumes aren't enough to carry a movie for 90 minutes.

I have a lot of movies I feel are overrated:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (anything that might romanticize being drugged up is wasted on me)
Boondock Saints (same goes for romanticizing meaningless violence)
Kill Bill (people I meet seem to think it is sacred and perfect, I don't think it is bad, just not great.)
Toy Story
The Social Network (same goes for romanticizing some jerkoff)
No Country For Old Men
Lost in Translation

Movies in general aren't my medium of choice.

Avatar definitely.

Cloverfield as well, though it was one of my major rants on here if you ever read it.

Matter of opinion... I thought Titanic was very moving. Maybe undeserving of eleven oscars, but it was still pretty good in my opinion.

I think I remember being unable to enjoy Kindergarten Cop while my parents said it was the greatest thing ever.

First of all, I believe it's very unfair for some people to call old movies overrated just because they judge them to modern standards. Whether you agree or not, these movies that critics call masterpieces helped pave advancements in cinematography and storytelling, which inspired modern movies and such. So, if you're gonna call an old movie overrated, do everyone a favor and least compare it to peers of the same era to make your point and don't just go saying a movie from the 40's is overrated just because you were born in the 90's.

I'm sorry I had to start this post with a rant, but the topic reminded me of that one video from that MOTHEFUCKIN' HIPSTER ATHEIST that came up with the biggest bullshit ever concieved to call movies overrated because liking classic movies is so mainstream apparently...

Sorry, sorry, I did it again. With that said, back to topic:

- Avatar: I'm tired of bitching about this movie, so let's try to be more objective this time. Great visual effects, but a huge missed opportunity to deconstruct the pilgrims vs indians storylines. James Cameron has a fucking reputation, so he could been alllwed to take risks.
- Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Fun movie and again nice visuals, but I can't see this movie as something to define a generation, other than the massive anti-hipster overtones. Plus had to cut a ton of stuff from the graphics novels in order to fit.
- Bayformers: Giants Robots fighting each other. How the fuck you fuck that up!? Thrice?!
- The Saw series: Had a good thng going for it, yet they had to fuck it up by making 8 (7, I know, but I'm sure they'll find a way to squeeze just one more...) of them and focusing in the gore.

I could add a few more, but I haven't actually seen them, so it'd be unfair of me to call them overrated without context.

I don't know if I mentioned it here before, but if that movie was supposed to define a generation, then I'm very embarrassed to be a part of it.

I really didn't see what the big fucking deal was when it comes to the Dark Crystal, maybe it's because I never saw it as a kid so there's no nostalgia factor.

Username, I thought Toy Story was overrated because the only groundbreaking thing about the movie was its complete use of CGI animation, which is actually pretty great I assume back in 1995. However people always seemed to treat it like all the aspects of it were groundbreaking. It's not particularly unique to me once you take the animation out of consideration. It isn't awful, It isn't something I prefer to watch. I just don't get why it has somehow cemented itself as a classic or masterpiece.

That is why. Smile It is only opinion though.

I almost fully agree with brellow, with the exceptions of Toy Story and Fear and Loathing (in fact, I always got the opposite feeling by seeing how sad drugs can make a person).

Seven: Here's a movie with an interesting concept albeit a bit theatrical, but the story tries to take itself seriously, which is fine. This is entirely undone by the mind-bogglingly convoluted and stupid ending. We can play "what if" all day, but I literally found myself laughing at how badly the story had turned toward the end. Of course, maybe it's just how I am, but I felt that leaving John Doe alive would've been a much better ending because it allowed for him to not win. But this is Hollywood, and they like their cliches.

District 9: I've already gone over why I don't like this movie many times, so I won't do it again. Everything about this movie is so simple and when I cannot get lost in something like this, I consider it flawed. I'm usually pretty good about giving movies the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes am pleasantly surprised (Cloverfield), but this movie did nothing for me, and astounded me it got a Best Picture nod.

Oliver!: Certainly not a bad film, but defintely not worth winning Best Picture over 2001: A Space Odyssey. Nothing to really note here, outside of the fact there were about 6 other movies much better that came out that year.

The Deer Hunter: One of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen. Again, I've mentioned how slow and uninteresting Cimino makes this movie, and I'm usually all for slow movies, but this just sucked.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off: What a ridiculous piece of shit. Actually, this movie might have been tolerable if it wasn't for Mathew Broderick and his shitty wooden acting. This guy has been scamming people for years.

Rocky IV: My least favorite Rocky.

Shutter Island: This was a major disappointment. I was expecting so much more out of this movie, but again with the cliche of it being him the entire time. Seen this scenario played out way too many times, and done better.

Basically every comic book movie that isn't Batman: I'm not a huge comic book guy, but I'm above a casual fan. Most of the comic book movies made before 10 years ago didn't work because the technology which limited what the limitless superhero could do. With today's technology, it's overdone, it's overkill. When you put too much emphasis on wowing the audience with what you can do, you lose focus of the story. There are a very few notable exceptions, but whenever I see a trailer for any superhero movie now, they all look the same.

Here's my problem with Titanic. First of all I have to say I didn't hate the movie completely, but when I watch a historical movie I want to see a depiction of of actual relevant history that has some sort of purpose. What I don't want to see is a completely pointless sappy subplot aimed at puberty suffering teenage starring Leonardo Dicaprio just to boost ticket sales. I think it's sad that you can't interest the general American public in history without splicing it with a completely boring pointless American Pie-ish subplot.

Also Shakespeare in Love was ridiculously overrated.

whats so historical about the titanic? it was a big boat and it sank. thats it. they cover the major points: not enough life boats, the boats didnt go back to go for other survivors, the captain was coerced into going faster than he wanted to. they added that love story so we can care about the boat sinking cuz we would have some backstory on two of the characters.

im not saying that it should have won 11 oscars, but there is nothing historical about the titanic except what i said.

now pearl harbor is another story. pearl harbor has huge historical significance and michael bay chose that to be the seconardy plot to some crappy love story between ben affleck & some bitch.

and SiL is overrated. saving private ryan should have definitely won best picture that year. not SiL
