So I saw Tron Legacy last night. I enjoyed it, except for the ending, which saw Kevin Flynn, Clu, and Tron all die. In other words, all the main characters from the original.
I'm sick of movies trying to the pass the torch to the younger generation. The younger generation sucks. Have you seen the young people today? They're barely literate. That's why Twitter's so popular, today's youth RARELY have thoughts that exceed 140 characters. And I'm using "rarely" mostly as a courtesy. There is no recorded instance of anyone born after 1994 ever having a single thought that exceeds 140 characters, but it's theoretically possible.
I don't know. The movie's overarching story is about Sam Flynn, Kevin Flynn's son, learning to be more responsible or something. But that type of story simply isn't compelling, ever. What's compelling is old heroes, now fallible and grayed, reclaiming glory. I want this movie to end with Flynn retaking Encom and hanging out with Bruce Boxleitner. Instead, we get his douchebag son riding off into the sunrise on his stupid motorcycle. Fucking lame.

That it is. The movie is a lot of fun for most of its duration, but killing off the three most important characters in the Troniverse in the last 15 minutes just so Flynn's son could learn some half-assed lesson about being more ambitious was a really poor decision.

All of this is eclipsed by the fact that it took us this fucking long to start the Tron Legacy Thread.... what the JESUS CUM GUYS!?!
I mean, Syd himself had to get off his ass and make it... good god.
Anyways, I definitely want to see tron legacy, I could have stayed and watched it as the second movie at my theater on friday but I refuse to see it before I see the original tron, My friend dana has it, so I will be going over to her house before I see the new one... Being a giant Daft Punk fan is killing me for not seeing this movie.

Oh man, I nearly raged. I may not be very old, but I like to think I, if not other people my age, am a little smarter than this. And by a little, I mean a fuck-ton.
And yes, Snesguy, I agree. Thank god for being born in '94.

I'm ancient; if I was dog, I'd be long past dead. It's my job to be cranky and generalize about the young and the things they do and like. Kinda like Cranky Kong. In fact, exactly like Cranky Kong.
Back in my day, we didn't have to worry about people stealing our bananas, because we couldn't afford bananas. We were so poor, the only thing we could do for fun was kidnap human women and hold them hostage at construction sites.

Who's surprised to hear that I'm the guy who didn't really like the movie?
First of all, the original Tron is NOT a good movie. It was incredibly impressive and ahead of its time visually, but the movie itself is both pretty bad and shows a ridiculous lack of understanding of how computers work.
Tron Legacy is practically the same fucking movie. I went into the theater expecting bright lights and techno. Nothing more. I was not expecting some cinematic masterpiece, just expected to be entertained. Instead, I kept falling asleep.
If you love the original it means you'll probably love this too, but it also means you have fucking awful taste in movies.

What I don't get is how Disney left everyone in the dark about not re-releasing the first one again before this one. I don't remember hardly anything about Tron, and thus it will keep me from seeing this picture in the theaters.

I'm amazed I'll have to be the first to say it....
Quorra was damned sexy. Worth the price of admission to see her in IMAX 3D.

The original Tron is amazing.
Tron was released on DVD in 2002 for its 20th anniversary. Disney's business model is that they re-release stuff on home video infrequently in order to ensure that it sells when they do. Tron will probably be available in a combo back with Tron Legacy when Legacy comes out on DVD.

I don't think Tron is a terrible movie at all. It's not a masterpiece and not one I can watch over and over again but it's definitely not a bad movie.

The more I think about this movie, the more it bothers me. The original Tron, while not a good movie, was excusable because people knew nothing of computers. This movie was a long, boring piece of shit that had no reason to exist. Making a sequel to a movie that takes place in a universe that's so ludicrously impossible isn't a good idea, and filling it with 2 hours of indiscernible philosophy and plot devices that make no sense whatsoever is a terrible idea.
Tron Legacy sucked. There, I said it. Awesome music. Shitty movie.

I loved Tron: Legacy, but I still agree with you. There are things that would have been even better had they done them differently.
Imagine if the movie was about Alan instead of Sam. Same deal, he goes looking for Flynn after getting the page. And then programs start mistaking Alan for their hero Tron, who was thought to be murdered by Clu. So he finds Alan and now a couple of older, awesome but regular dudes have to be heroes and save the Grid.
I'm just spitballing here but tell me there isn't an awesome story in that.

That would have been pretty damn cool, DarkMaze.
And don't get me wrong, I had a great time watching it. Visually, it was fantastic. It was a hell of a ride, and I didn't even see it in 3D yet. Heck, the fact that they even made a sequel to Tron and brought back both Jeff Daniels and Bruce Boxleitner at all, is pretty fantastic.
The whole "boy goes looking for long lost father" story only has two endings, and both of them are pretty trite. The movie took the less trite route, but it also took the less emotionally satisfying route. I mean, the movie wasn't even really about Sam. The movie is only about Sam for as long as it takes them to introduce Clu and Kevin, then the movie becomes squarely about them. Sam does pretty much nothing of consequence after being rescued by Quorra, other than force Kevin into the role of reluctant hero. He's just sort of there for the ride. And since the movie makes you more interested in Kevin, it becomes less interesting when he dies. I think the filmmakers realized this, because the movie wraps up pretty quickly, almost abruptly, after Kevin dies so Sam and Quorra can escape. There could have been a much bigger pay off the end with a living Kevin. A board room scene, in particular, would have been a lot of fun.
From a business standpoint, the ending doesn't seem to have been a great idea either. Obviously Disney hoped for this to be a great financial success, and when a film is a great financial success, you follow it up with additional media, whether it be another movie or simply another video game. Well, you've killed off the titular character and the two other most important characters, and seemingly wiped out the entire digital world Flynn created, thus eliminating any chance of survival.
Actually, wait, hold on. They could still do a sequel! I've got it...

LOL.
I really wanted Kevin to live as well. I'm a little tired of the trope where the mentor/father-who's-more-awesome-than-the-hero (much as I liked Sam in this flick) must die so the hero can learn responsibility or something.
Can't a guy learn responsibility without dead parents?
