okay first off... I was never really "goth" growing up, I was more of a skid/nerd I loved Heavy Metal, Dungeons and Dragons, Organized Sports and Video Games... I guess I was youtr pretty average guy with an interest in gaming... but over the last few years my interests completely changed... I dunno I guess Ive always had a thing for "the ark side" but really Goth's are completely anti stereotypical from what everyone makes them out to be. Okay just because someone loves Horror movies, Zombies, Industrial and Dark Clothing it doesnt mean they are mad at the world or angry people that hate everyone. Infact I would say its the exact opposite, goths love culture, life, people... maybe our own culture, our own lifestyle and the people involved with it but damnnit we embrace it and enjoy it! I have yet to see any of my friends write melodramatic poetry and so far no goths I personally know have made any suicide attempts but according to statistics a good chunck of the human population attempts it or thinks about attempting it. For the most part though these "scary" goth kids arent scary at all, theyre friendly, out going and fun Smile We pretty much just listen to and dance to awesome music, dress how we like, and really just love being around our friends. What so wrong with that?? this bothers me because I was so polite to the store clerk at the seven god damn eleven on my way home from "the temple" our newest industrial club and before I leave the guy is like "I hope you attend church" like seriously? wtf is it to him what I do with my time, its not like im out hurting anyone, I had a wonderful night listening to music and everything was euphoric and happy (no I didnt do any drugs tonight... not even pot) then this chump sits here and is like "I hope you go to church" like why? I think the church has done way more harm to the human condition then a bunch of goths... fuck him and fuck his church! I'll take Industrial, hot girls in latex dresses and beer over his "church" any day

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

You're assuming he said that because you were dressed in black and had eyeliner on. As far as you know, he may say that to every customer that comes in, trying to push his religion to the fore as born again Christians are wont to do.

My experience growing up around goth kids was that they were angry, semi-dysfunctional, kept to themselves or their own group, and always took every opportunity to give someone else a hard time, especially if that person was dressed nicely. They dressed the way they did to invite bullying, piss people off, and justify their anger at the world. Maybe today's neo-goths are a gentler, more trendy breed, but in the mid 90s they were not good people, at least the ones I knew in high school.

In my experience in living in multiple bigger cities and in the mountains, all goth kids are almost exactly like they are shown in South Park. Never smiling, constantly scowling and making fun of people who dress nice. It's not so much a scene as it is....well wait, have you ever a seen a goth person over 21? Probably not, I rest my case.

Goth people scare me. Like seriously, I start sweating and get chills down my spine when I'm near them. They give off a bad vibe when they've congregated together. I don't have a problem with them though, since they haven't done an thing bad to me yet, except make me nervous. But that's completely forgivable.

I honestly think it's about a fifty fifty mix of both. I was definitely into the whole black clothes, spikes and shit like that phase, but I didn't like flouncy clothes or Romanticist wear. I was more combat boots, chains and yes, the ubiquitous black trenchcoat when I was in high school. I spent a lot more time with the burners/wasteoids though. I was sort of a crowd hopper, which was nice. Got to see how a lot of people lived but didn't need to know most of their sordid secrets/crappy problems. I like khakis now! And corduroys. Much more comfortable than leather.

The Visigoths and the Ostrogoths would probably facepalm at the evolution of their namesake. You should get back to basics, grow a big, bushy beard, start smashing legionnaires in the face with warhammers and sack Rome.

yeah I was pretty drunk when I wrote that

Oh yes... a truly dreadful, angry, miserable bunch of people indeed Razz

maybe the stereotype only applies to kids under the age of 18., its actually funny, I pretty much hate the "stereotypical" angry goth too. But they arent goth, just retards.

I do know that my friends just like the music, clothes and our friends... we dont really care what other people wear but if someone heckles us we stick up for ourselves. I also find it funny that at our two industrial bars theres no dress code but at some of the other bars theyd never let a metalhead, punk or goth in, not a chance.

Hey, if you choose to wear black trench coasts and metal shit all over your face AND you are an adult you really have no business nor do you deserve to get into any bar.

what are we al in high school??

I am pretty sure I am legally allowed to wear black and any style of clothing I want. I have just as much right as a "chach, prep, indie guy, jock, gamer, alien etc. etc. etc." to go drink alcohol at a bar.

by your logic, when we all reach the age of 18 we are no longer allowed any type of rights to fashion or trends... so why dont we pass a law that all adults must shave there heads and wear grey jump suits.

now whats not okay is say.... what happened to Sophie Lancaster... if you dont already know, look it up

in a nut shell... she got killed, she died defending her boyfriend and got her head kicked in, all becuase they dressed "different"

Speaking for myself, I was completely in jest with my post, bass. I just love the SP Goth kids and can't resist a chance to quote them.

I use to go after goth chicks because I thought they would be easier considering most were anti social and looking for attention. It was actually harder to get in their pants than prep or normal girls.

Its also funny when u date a goth chick and her parents are full blown rednecks. Very Happy

Memories. I knew a few of them that could actually pull off the black attire pretty well. I never really fit into a crowd but I dated one or two. They were actually pretty sweet girls. I didn't really care for their taste in music and I couldn't help but roll my eyes at their "deep" poetry. That being said I've known a lot of goths in high school. I never hung out with them for extended periods of time but most of them were actually pretty nice and intelligent. Of course their were a few who took the scene a little too far and acted like total dicks but you could say the same about most groups in high school.

One of my favorite eps! Mostly because, while I don't mind goths (or any such group as long as they aren't assholes) the faux-goth Hot Topic crowd really bugs.

old words and meanings often get adopted all the time to represent something else

take the term AVATAR for example. to most people it means something completely different today then it did thousands of years ago

Icon is the same

even Punk meant something different before it was adopted by well... punk rockers

the term Heavy Metal was coined by steppenwolf from the song line "Heavy metal thunder"

however having a giant axe and a beard would be pretty bad ass

Again, you're making an assumption (as all 'outcasts' like to do to justify their outcastiness) that the bars aren't letting them in based on their clothing alone. You're also assuming there are bars that actually do that (there aren't; except for maybe some redneck bars in the deep south).

If there is a bar that turns away goths and punks, it's probably for a reason such as the last group of goths and punks that came in trashed the place, or started a fight, or did something to cause the owner to be wary of that particular group. Since you don't know what happened in the past, you can't assume it's just all prejudice.

It's cool if you want to wear clothing and makeup and sport aggressive piercings that cause people to raise their eyebrow at you as you pass, but don't bitch because people react the way you want them to. You know exactly how people will react to you. You know it'll be more difficult getting a job and that some people will prejudge you. You know full well that metal spikes, black trenchcoats, mohawks, cheek piercings, rattling chains, and black eyeliner will cause most people to look at you as you pass.
It's not about "the music" or the "fashion" or making some kind of statement. It's about the reactions of society that most goths/punks delight in stoking.

You all may be awesome, intelligent, great people but you're still trying to illicite a reaction, so stop complaining because you achieve what you're aiming for.

Well I couldn't find a warhammer or even a lousy battleaxe in the supply closet, so instead I tore my mouse from my desktop and vaulted the cubicle, swing my mouse flail mightily and bellowing What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their womenfolk!

I think I scared a temp in to quitting, anyone wanna work graveyard shift with me?

I think you miss the point, I dont dress how I do for a "reaction" nor do my friends, we dress like we do because its our itnerest, its what we like to do. As ive stated again and again... Goths love the fashion, music and the friends in our subculture. Its not that we are all "mad at the world" or hate anyone that doesnt dress like we do, honestly none of us really care, unless someone starts something with us or harrasses our friends.

What bothers me is the ignorance people display as a biproduct of that fact, your absolutely correct, people are going to prejudge someone based on what they wear, but to me thats almost no different then prejudging someone based on the color of their skin, their sexual preference, their culture or anything else that might identify someone as an individual or unique.

Everyone anywhere should be allowed to wear what they want and be comfortable, what gives someone the right to threaten me because they dont like my clothes?

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

Only hippies talk like that. This Is A Joke

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

Look, people that wear all black trench coats and shit have a reputation in this country. It's unfortunate, but if you are gonna wear black trench coats, and whatever other shit that goth people wear than you should also understand the consequences.

Would you go to a job interview and expect to get hired dressed like that? Fuck no. So don't be pissed when people act like that towards you if that's actually how you dress in your normal life.
