Yeah, Bergman is definitely on my list. Just...he's brilliant. He just is.
Danny Boyle would probably be second on my list. I have yet to see one movie from him that's not completely brilliant. (Sunshine, 28 Days Later, Trainspotting, etc...) and I was so thrilled when he won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionare. He's done much better films than that, but eh...at least he finally got the recognition he deserves.
As much as I love him though, Steven Spielberg would have to be my favorite of all time. I mean, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Schlinder's List....I mean come ON. His resume is insane, and reads like a top ten list of my favorite films.

Carpenter, Cronenberg, Gilliam, Lynch are my top four, because they have style.
Most othe directors seems to just take a good script, a good cast, and a bunch of money, throw them together and hope for the best. To be fair though, it takes a decent amount of talent to recognize a good script. Or to write one.

While part of me agrees with you Syd, a larger part firmly believes that, in spite of its brilliant script, Raiders of the lost Ark, while it would have been good without Spielberg on its own merits, would not be nearly the icon it is today if not for him. Same goes for Schindler's List. ...Or 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Slumdog Millionare without Boyle, for that matter.

While I love Spielberg's movies (Indiana Jones, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, and of course, the Jurassic Park films) first place for my favorite director has to go to a certain Mr. Quentin Tarantino. He has brilliant visions. His scripts are orgasmically good, and he's a pretty good actor as well. Robert Zemeckis is awesome as well.

I really cannot stand 28 Days Later, and as a soldier it should offend you. The first two acts are brilliant, absolutely brilliant. But once they meet the British Army it's all down hill: "We haven't had sex in 28 days, we need to rape the womenfolk to 'repopulate' England. Yeah... repopulate."
These are supposed to be trained soldiers. The best of the best, and they're turned into idiots. It's shameful. It's not a realistic scenario, and anyone who thinks it is is far too cynical for my liking.

Nah. That's far, far less a commentary on soldiers and the military than it is a commentary on human nature. The way I read it, the soldiers just happened to be the ones with the training and equipment to survive but, had anyone else survived, it would have degenerated the same way. Lord of the Flies, man.
Besides, military training has never stopped ANY army (including our own soldiers) from raping and murdering in a stressful, wartime situation. Very, very sad and shameful, but also a fact.
Now, the dark, depressing real life stuff said, I do agree with your assessment of the movie, kind of. The last act is definitely the weakest. It could have been handled much better. But I still love the movie (and Cillian Murphy.)

Apparently you have never met British Royal Marines. I thought it was a pretty accurate description...
All kidding aside, my favorites would be Kubrick, Boyle The Cohens, and Gilliam.

The only Tarantino films I wasn't in love with were Jackie Brown (though it was still decent) and Inglorious Basterds. I know that's controversial, but I found the whole thing to be...off somehow and it left me less than satisfied at the end which was disappointing because I love Tarantino.
I like the Coen brothers too, but they can be a bit hit or miss for me.

Whoa, good idea. He should have gone all out and had Anne Franke unload a machine gun into Hitler's face, or maybe be the one to set the theater on fire. Definitely blew an opportunity there.

Me too! It was such a let down, I was pissed. However, Burn After Reading was absolutely glorious and a masterpiece if you ask me and Hudsucker Proxy is one of my most favorite films.
