It has been the subject of debate for years and no reasonable lab testing has been conclusive until now:

High-fructose corn syrup is bad for you. Period. Not might be, not could be, it is.

http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S26/91/22K07/

Please stop eating it so that you don't get fat and cost tax payers more money to fix when you are obese and have health issues.

Drinking a Mountain Dew as I read this. I am rather lean overall, but I guarentee if I were to cut out everything high fructose corn syrup, I would drop at least 15 more lbs.

Ever since I took up water over six months ago and cut down on sodas, I lost like twenty pounds.

True for most processed foods.

It is chemically similar to sugar, so until now it has been debated, but never proven harmful.

Is there any correlation between the jump in US obesity vs the beginning of wide spread use of high fructose corn syrup?

The US produces a whooooooole lot of corn domestically. It has to import sugar cane. Do the math.

Personally, I say meh. There will be a study in 6 months saying it's fine. That's the way these things go. I would like to see real sugar come back in fashion, though. HF Corn Syrup just sucks in comparison.

My research is quick internet research, but the first charts I could find support your theory.

1960-1980 the numbers for average weight are pretty stable for both men and women, but look what happens over the next 20 years.
http://www.treadmilldeskinc.com/obesechart051506.pdf

The timing seems to be in line with the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into processed foods and sodas.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-fructose_corn_syrup#Production

Of course, food has become cheaper since the late 80s/early 90's because corn has been used to feed grass eating animals with the introduction of lysine. Cheaper food could be the cause of the bulge. Either way, feel free to blame _____. Yeah, I am afraid to write down the blank because the people who make _____ like to sue people who talk poorly about _____. Like I said, I have no factual proof to back up my claim, so this is just speculation that _____ might be the devil.

Funny thing... when you stop eating stuff with it, other stuff starts tasting better after about a week.

Not likely, the stuff is made of pure poison. Human beings were not designed to intake so much corn, this is the reason so many fat kids are getting trapped in their desks each year.

1) The agriculture lobby is incredibly powerful. For example, when we passed a bill granting subsidies for ethanol producers, it all went to the dirty and inefficient corn ethanol, instead of the cleaner, more efficient sugar cane ethanol.

2) Americans don't give a shit. Nowadays, you can buy a 12-pack of snack cakes or soda for less than a pepper, and because a lot of us are raised in a way that desserts and sugary foods were rationed for the sake of our health, and they're now cheaper than ever (thanks to corn syrup), we're all as fat as our wallets.

It's fairly plain to see that American obesity can be directly linked to HFCS. It's the reason why fatty foods are cheap, which creates the dilemma of getting more than what you pay in the short term, but creating problems later on (obesity leading to disease and disability, etc.). I'd like to see something that can edge out HFCS that's healthier and provides more of an incentive to grow, but as long as I can buy a pack of Oreos for the same price as a pineapple, I'm not holding my breath.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Kay, there's a solution to this. Are you ready? Beans. It's like my dad says time and time again, "You could live off beans." There great for you, full of nutrients and all that, not processed, but best of all, CHEAP. You can get like a POUND of beans for a QUARTER. Nothing is worth a quarter anymore! So I guess what I'm trying to say is: Don't eat anything that isn't beans ever.

Peanuts, too. They're cheap to farm and produce, and very high in the nutrients they have. The problem is that they're cheap. It's easier to make money off of corn, because they don't have to exported out/imported in. Plus, considering that running into an American who only drinks soda because they "hate the taste of water" is incredibly common, I don't see a huge amount of Americans willing to cook and eat a vegetable (however simple it may be) and just go to McDonald's and just gorge themselves for a few bucks.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Hold on, has anybody ACTUALLY met somebody like this? Not liking foods that are good for you is one thing, not liking WATER, the most absolutely necessary substance to human life on Earth, combined with disregard to any substitute besides soda (Milk? Juice?) makes me want to drop kick a fucking baby.

This.

And is it really a surprise to people that high-fructose (high-sugar) syrup is bad for you? Just consume it in moderation with everything else and you'll be fine. No need to ban soda.

No one on the planet has a fucking clue about what is and isn't good for you anyway as it changes every year. Wine is good for your heart! Actually, no, it isn't! It's chocolate that's good! Wait, no, chocolate is still bad unless you snort it, then it's good!

Just don't be a glutton, understand genetics and that some people are just fatter than others, stop listening to "diet gurus" or "Princeton studies", and live your life eating balanced meals so your heart doesn't give out. Pretty simple shit.

All things are good in moderation, that is true. The problem though is the government allows these major companies to dump this crap into EVERYTHING. There will never, NEVER be a study that will show HFCS being good or even not harmful to you. There is a good movie on this whole thing based off of the book fast food nation. Watch this movie only if you have enough money to start shopping at local farmers markets and buying organic foods.

Well to be fair water is already in other liquids so they aren't not getting water.

Sure, just add corn syrup for taste.
