I Want To Buy The Rights To A Movie...How Do I Do It?

The topic says it all. There are some movies I want to own. By "own" I mean I get to re-release these movies to theaters, get to make a commentary track on the future DVD releases, and get to preserve the movies for future generations.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are the titles in question old enough to be in the public domain?

Even on some of these terrible low budget movies, you'll likely be spending tens of thousands of dollars on, so it's really up to you whether or not it's worth it.

Yeah I have no professional knowledge to base this off of but I bet it's gonna cost a pretty penny.

You can always do that with Night of the Living Dead for free since it wasn't copyrighted!

Unsurprisingly, Hacker doesn't know what he's talking about. The rights holders are most likely the studios that made the films. He is half-right, though: you'd have to contact them.

What movies are you talking about?

BURN THE WITCH!

On average, how hard is it usually obtain rights to a film that say are of low quality? (say less then a b-rated movie for quality standards)

Wild Things from 1998, I know it will probably never happen but I'd love to own it.

Impossible. You're talking about a $20 million film owned by a major studio, the rights to which are still being exploited. Unless you have millions burning a hole in your pocket, it's not going to happen.

I'm not trying to sound rude, but that movie already out on DVD and Blu-Ray by Columbia Tri-Star and is not exactly a low budget movie. Even if that wasn't the case I really don't think a studio as large as Mandalay Bay is going to license the distribution rights to a single individual.

I know that and as I said in the post above I said it would probably never happen. I know this is impossible but I just wanted to see what the process would be.

I'd love to see it get re-released though. Apparently they are remaking it but if Bill Murray is not in the remake it won't be good.

They did release it in 2004, they will likely put out another one.

I think the 2004 release was the straight to DVD sequel. They put out an unrated version of the original that year to promote the sequel.

Kurosawa movies are up for grabs

in fact pretty much anything that's a Criterion release is. I think don't quote me on that.

That'd be pretty bad ass to have the rights to Seven Samurai and Ran.

There's absolutely no way you'd ever be able to buy Wild Things unless you're a multi-millionaire. I guarentee you would be paying at least 10 million dollars for it, and that's if you're very very lucky.
