I hear a lot about the greatness of FFIV, however not so much about V. I know that FFV wasn't released in this country when it was supposed to be, but I found it to be superior to FFIV in almost every way. I found the freedom of the job system to be fulfilling in every way I wanted a FF game to be. Also, I found it to be a lot more challenging. In FFIV you had virtually the same experience every time you went through it. I liked FFIV, however I just think FFV was better. I'm just curious to see who agrees. FFIV or FFV?

FFIV has a better story. And a main character whose name isn't retarded. Bartz rhymes with farts.
FF5 is a great game though, and criminally underrated. But shame on you for leaving FF6 out of this discussion. There have been several FF4 vs. FF6 debates on these forums, so it seems a little unfair to single out FF4 as the lone target of your "FF5 is awesome" crusade.

Not trying to start a crusade, just curious as to what people think about FFV and why it's barely mentioned. I do agree that IV had a better story, but that's about the only thing better about it. Since the characters were always the same (with the same abilities), it was virtually the same experience every time you went through it. What made V so great wasn't the story so much but the customization. And of course I completely forgot his name was Bartz, since I always rename my characters. So I don't think his name is the issue. (There's a feature in the game that allows you to name him whatever).
I didn't mention 6 because I don't think there's a soul alive who would say that 5 is better than 6. So I figured I didn't have to mention it. FFVI was arguably the best of all FF games so did I really need to start a debate about that? Who on earth would argue that 4 was better than 6?

Seven was cool, I liked it. However my personal favs were still 5 and 6. Probably just cause I'm an older guy. Those older graphics were just my generation. That old school feel is what I grew up with so I will probably always feel that way.

I never played Final Fantasy when I was a kid, so I prefer the more modern ones that I played when I was a teenager/20s with FF9 being my favorite. Sadly, IV and V are just too old school for me to enjoy now, despite how many times I try to love them.
I still haven't really given VI a proper play though yet and need to do so. Maybe if it gets ported to the DS...

I'm looking forward to playing IX, haven't yet. I'm still somewhere in the middle of VIII, which I'm having a hard time liking as much as the previous three.
I think IV was ported to the DS wasn't it? Don't know about 5 or 6.

The reason it's rarely talked about is that most people in our generation never got to play FF5, because it wasn't out in North America, and most of the kids today don't care about anything before FF7, because they're young and stupid.
When/if they give that the same lame DS treatment they gave FF3 and FF4, all the kids will suddenly like it.

Most kids have actually played 5 or 6 on urging from older fans on the series and..still don't like them.
infact, every time I try to play six I get too bored to progress about a third of the way into the game.

I still have not played V due to the obvious reasons, but in my opinion the series started to go downhill after VI when it became more and more pompous. VI however, is a true masterpiece

Probably why I've taken a liking to 5 now. I didn't get a chance to play it when I was a teenager cause it wasn't released here when it was supposed to be. I played the shit out of 4 and 6 when they were released on the SNES. Just haven't gotten my fill of five yet.
I don't own a DS nor will I likely ever get one. And I certainly won't get one to play some bullshit graphically enhanced remake of a classic game that doesn't need it. These damn kids these days don't seem to understand that graphics aren't what make a game good.

IV is the best out of the pre-VII FF's to me (yes, even better than the vastly overrated VI), so you'll get no agreement from me.
However, V is fun in it's own right.

Everyone's got their personal favorites. To say that FFVI is overrated is still just an opinion. I personally thought Destiny of an Emperor was the best game on the old NES. Better than Final Fantasy and yes even better than the vastly overrated Super Mario 3. It is still however only my opinion and how many out there are going to agree with it?

IX is awesome, imho. I'm undecided if I actually believe it to be the overall BEST in the series...(I think that would have to go to FF VI), but its absolutely my personal favorite. (It may be heresy to say so, but I actually think FF X has the best and most fascinating pure story of any of them. VI undoubtedly had better *characters* though.)
As for IV vs. V...well, I like IV. I've only played through V once, but have played through IV many times. I suppose that says something about my preference. I'd also argue it has the second-best cast of characters after VI.

Thats craziness.Your crazy.
I prefer V over IV, but I'm a sucker for job systems, especially ones with interesting jobs that don't punish you for taking levels in them (as the stat growth stuff does in tactics) but instead rewards you (with the stats and inherants being added to the base at the end).
V also has the advantage of not being so damn heavy like the others. But mainly it wins for having the last good set of rpg mechanics until X as I've been told.

Hell yes. The job system is fuckin awesome. You don't need a plethera of characters when you have a plethera of jobs. Samurai, mime, chemist, sorceror, geomancer, and all the cool abilities. Sshot, Fdraw, 2-swords, blue. That was all fuckin sweet. In FFVI of course there were so many characters you didn't need the job system. In FFIV of course there were a number of characters, but the story always determined who was in your party and you had no control over it. Also there weren't nearly as many cool abilities as in 5 or 6.

Top 5 FF for me:
1. Mystic Quest
2. Tactics on the PSX
3. Final Fantasy X2
4. Final Fantasy XI
5. Final Fantasy Virtual Bart Edition
Seriously 7 was great because is bailed out Square and kept those games coming. But I love IV because it was the first to grab my attention as a child and I can still play through it today.

VII didn't REALLY bail out Square. They remained on tenuous financial footing until Enix stepped in and bought them.

I thought 8 started off strongly, but later becomes a clusterfuck of a piss-poor story and characters who don't evolve at all (with the exception of Squall himself).
9 is very good, though.....go for it.

It's an SNES game, SoldierHawk. It's #93 on the SNES list and it beat Kiwi Kraze during the polls.
Regarding FF5, I used to call that one my favorite. Bartz remains my favorite male FF character.

Right, I'm an ass...I was thinking of the game known in the states as Final Fantasy Adventure. For whatever reason, it's called Mystic Quest (without the FF hook) across the Pond, and since it was a group of British friends who got me into the game, I always think of it as Mystic Quest even though it's not the NorAm title. I don't believe I've ever played FF Mystic Quest for the SNES.

I actually played Mystic Quest a long time ago. Never went through it all the way though. I thought it was pretty cheesy actually. It never compared to games in the actual SERIES. Wasn't that game meant to appeal to a younger crowd at the time, or just a dumber one?
