You said that. It was not immature, but it was stereotypical. I know of many high schools who play pokemon, as well as 35 year olds.
Just because it is marketed to 12-15 year olds doesn't mean nobody else can play it. Do only 12-15 year olds play the Wii? How about the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker?
I also saw many high school girls wear Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer backpacks and pajamas. |
Ok, the comment I made was about Pokemon, I understand where you are coming from with the examples you are citing but those are entirely different subjects. The Wii was made and marketed towards a large demographic of people. Nintendo designed it to get as large as audience as possible and it is working. People that have never bought a video game system in their life have a Wii, I work with one girl who says she bought one to lose weight. Teenage girls who wear Sesame Street and Dora backpacks bought them because 5 years ago, they loved the shows. I am willing to bet 5 more years from now they won't own anything that has to do with those shows. The legend of Zelda is popular a IP that I am sure a large number of use here grew up playing and loved. It has and is becoming more acceptable to play video games the older you get.
I am sure Pokemon has similar nostalgic value to some, but that does not put it in the same boat as Zelda. Granted, if you tell one of your casual acquaintances or friend that you are going to go home and play Zelda and your 35 that person might look at you like your a nerd or geek. Tell that same person that you are going to go play Pokemon and I know that you are going to get a whole different response. Tell them that you are going to the mall to play Pokemon cards with a 12 year old, you are going to lose a whole lot of credibility in a subjective environment. People remember the Pokemon craze, moms buying 40 dollar game boy games every other month with little actual difference than the color of the cartridge. The TV show is mass produced to the point that most Animes look like shake spear/Rembrandt in comparison to the plot and animation of the Pokemon TV show. The cards a hamster wheel of a cash cow due to the turnover of the content. It is designed to sell by a certain formula with little or no semblance of quality. The people that are most likely the kind to buy it are moms tired of little Johnny constantly nagging for more more more. Then a month later they bring the game mom bought back to gamestop to trade for another Pokemon game or some Pokemon cards.
It is in no way stereotypical to say that Pokemon is designed for a younger audience. Sorry if I offended you. If you like Pokemon, fine. Maybe I just missed the boat but I think it is "for kids". I am willing to put money on there being far more "new" 35 year old Zelda fans than there are "new" 35 year old Pokemon fans. In fact, I know there are. I worked in video game retail all through my collage career. In the midst of the Pokemon craze and beyond. If you still feel that I am stereotyping I guess we should just agree to disagree.
Also, username. No I don't think it is weird for older people to go see Wall-E. Movies like that are not just designed for kids. Half of the jokes in that movie and movies similar to that have jokes that most 12 year olds won't get until they buy it on DVD a few years from now.
