There was a time when Sierra absolutely dominated the PC gaming market. Their imaginative adventure games challenged a generation of young PC gamers to think outside the box to solve bizarrely entertaining puzzles. But like most successful ventures, the company was eventually sold and the vision of its original founders, Ken & Roberta Williams, was lost. The final spike was driven through the heart of the old Sierra philosophy when King's Quest VIII: The Mask of Eternity was released. If you don't remember this game it's because a) it was so bad you've repressed it or b) you never even played it because it was badly marketed. The game was seemingly designed to fail and once it did, Sierra announced that they would never make another King's Quest game again.
But now there is a new a hope. A team of independent programmers was so upset with how the franchise ended that they have devoted massive amounts of their own time to making an unofficial King's Quest IX. The project is nearing completion and when it finally is done, it's going to be 100% free.
To learn more about this project, visit the home page below. You might not be able to visit it until October 1st though, because they've exceeded their montly bandwith.
