So recently, GameFAQs had this big contest to determine which game franchise was the best of all-time. It came down to LoZ and FF, and Legend of Zelda won. I don't know if LoZ is really the best franchise ever, but I would agree it's probably better than Final Fantasy. There have been mediocre LoZ games, particularly Link's Awakening, but there have been some pretty terrible FF games. And that crappy Spirits Within movie automatically DQs Final Fantasy from being the best anything.

Not that tough a choice for me. The only LoZ game I like is the SNES one. As for FF, I even moderately liked Mystic Quest, and that's saying something.

What about X-2, with the ribbons, dancing, J-pop, and other assorted gayness?

The only Zelda game I've liked is the SNES one. I fucking hate the NES Zelda and I've never played any of the others, so yeah. Same goes for Final Fantasy basically, I only ever played Final Fantasy III for SNES. If I had to pick between those two? Well...I think Legend of Zelda wins out by a narrow margin if nothing else because of its beautiful simplicity, functionality, and quality of gameplay.
Final Fantasy III is a great game, it's a huge epic with tons of great characters and plot etc. etc., but the combat is a total fucking bore and it's extremely tedious to play more than once. The lack of a "new game+" feature is . Chrono Trigger addressed this and would become probably the most played SNES game of all time by me because of it.
Zelda's fun to pick up and play, and it's a great game to play once every couple years, or once a year, because you just forget enough to make it interesting searching for all the little items again, but you sort of remember how to solve the puzzles so you're able to beat the game in a timely manner since you're not lost. I like doing that with Super Metroid too, and coincidentally I just got done with a leisurely 7 hour playthrough of that.
So yeah, basically, Legend of Zelda got my vote, because it was just more fun.

Zelda I - LOVE IT!!!
Zelda II - Not a big fan.
Zelda Gameboy - I like it. Portable Zelda. Spiffy ^_^
Zelda SNES - I rarely have played it due to my lack of having a SNES growing up. I don't have the patience with emulators to play it long enough... especially when I deleted them in 24 hours
Zelda 64 - F'ing awesome.
Zelda Majora's Mask - Highly addicting.
Zelda Wind Waker - Rarely played due to its ownership to my sister.
Zelda cartoon show - Fun in a nostalgia kind of way.
Zelda on Captain N - Kickass. Okay, so I just like the older Zelda/Link interpretations. That's true even in Zelda 64.
Final Fantasy I - I love to hate it. It is friggin' hard (NES version). But, I love the sprites thanks to 8-bit Theatre. I RP as the characters just walking around and fighting amongst each other. Bless web comics.
Final Fantasy II - I own it, but I haven't played it enough.
FF IV - Own... Never played it.
FF V - I own it, but I haven't played it enough.
FF VI- Kinda fun, but hasn't lived up to the hype it had back in the 90s when it was known as FFIII.
Final Fantasy VII - Never beaten it, but I enjoy it.
Final Fantasy VIII - I've beaten it twice. I am in love with this game. LOVE LOVE LOVE the time travel ironies. I should mention I'm a believer that Rinoa is really *spoiler*.
Final Fantasy IX - I can't get around to playing it again. It was just too sad... hehehe.
FF The Spirits Within - I like the movie. Especially James Woods.
FF Advent Children - Oh God was this movie confusing... and kinda dull... but it was beautiful. Easily better than Spirits. But I gotta side with Pixar, they have the humor and heart I want from CG flicks.
THE WINNER!? I gotta side with Zelda. Just because I can actually finish more than two games.

Hey, excUUUUUUUUuuuse ME, princess!
Okay, I got that outta my system. Um, and I really can't add anything useful, as I've never really played much of the FF games. I adore RPGs in concept, story, graphics, music, and all that good stuff. I just don't have the patience to play them.

Call me a Square fanboy, but IMO, the FF line stopped once the company became Squeanix.

Well, since the only FF game I ever made it all the way through was the first one on NES, and I've tried just about all the others, I'll go with Zelda. I'm mega-excited about Twilight Princess, and I've enjoyed pretty much all the games in the series immensely. But, still, I wouldn't put it as the Best Series Ever. I think that has gotta go to Mario if only for Mario 3, the greatest video game ever. What do you guys think? What series is the best ever? One of these two?

The magic of subjectivity.
I'm going to just state that I can't choose a series. Both have games I like, games I love, and games I hate. Sometimes, I feel like playing one or the other... and that difference isn't great or even noticable enough to warrant some absolute biased decision.
I will say though that FFVI is one of my favorite games.

Hell yeah. I really like the first 7 games, after that, it starts to get kinda meh. Also, Final Fantasy III wasn't that great. The real Final Fantasy III, that is. Not the original U.S. version of Final Fantasy VI.

Didn't Final Fantasy 2 (The real 2) have a system where the more damage you took, the more your HP raised, and so on?

Zelda 1 - Good game, classic
Zelda 2 - I liked it, but it was HARD. I never got very far until I played in on emulators years later. (Thanks to being able to save any time.) I still never beat it, though.
Zelda 3 - Probably my favorite SNES game ever, and my favorite Zelda ever. Kick ass.
FF 7 - Awesome. Although I must admit I wish Aeries hadn't died.
FF 8 - Really a mixed bag. I liked most aspects of the story, but hated the experience and "draw" system. Squall was a great character, though. He was very well done, though probably at the expense of most of the other characters in the game.
FF 9 - A really underrated Final Fantasy game, IMO. I was glad to see a return to the "class" system.
In the end, I'd have to go with FF.

Yes. You also got better at spells and weaponry by using them more.

I like both of the series, but I gotta go with LoZ on this one. Zelda is straightforward. Even with minimal text you can beat the original.
FF went on with confusing dialogue, boring combat, and characters that all looked the same up 'till 4. (I've never played the real 3 though, only the one claiming to be 3. not sure where it fits in)

The SNES games that most Americans know as Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III are actually FF4 and FF6. I don't know why they skipped FF5... it was really good.

Let me tell you a little story.
One Christmas, I had asked my parents for Final Fantasy 1 and 2: Dawn of Souls. Normally I specify for what system the game is, but since this was such a unique title, I didn't. I woke up on Christmas morning to find Final Fantasy X-2 in all of its gay, convoluted glory. I didn't even open the thing. I said that it wasn't what I wanted, and my parents said that was what I wrote down. We got into a heated argument that sometimes still starts up today. In the end, I got FF:DoS and beat the game. It was awesome. The End.
To stay on topic, I didn't even vote on that last poll. I saw the page, and realized that if I tried to choose, my brain would turn to mush under the strain, and I would become as intelligent as a houseplant.
In short, that poll would have caused me to transform into George Bush. Thank you, and good night.

I wasn't around when this thread started, however I've only played 3 Zelda games. The 2 NES releases and Link to the Past. So maybe I'm not a real authority on Zelda. I've played Final Fantasy I through IX. So I guess that means I'm slightly in favor of the FF series. However, like the Zelda series, the FF series also has great games and 'just ok' games. I played the hell out of Zelda 1 and LttP, but only played 2 once. I guess I didn't like 2 as much.
I've always wanted to step ahead a generation with the Zelda games, however I just never got an N64. What Zelda games (newer than Link to the Past) would anyone recommend?

This thread has been entombed for 4 years and you dare awake it from its slumber? At this point the spirits that guard it might be very strong, proceed with caution.
As for Zelda vs FF, this is an easy call for best story. The Zelda series is tied together by common themes and tidbits of stories, the FF series is unlinked completely. While individually some FF games may be better than the Zelda games, as a whole the Zelda series is a solid franchise that consistently delivers without changing so much that you wonder where the hell you are.
For those who did not play the most recent Zelda title for the Wii, Twilight Princess takes about 3-4 hours to get into, but then becomes very good.
For those who did play it, think back to the original, you can draw a direct comparison between the original game and the most recent one. Final Fantasy however is so unlike its origins that it really isn't even the same series by anything other than title.

My vote for best series ever is a tie between the Metal Gear saga, and Romance Of The Three Kingdoms.

Holy shit, that's some powerful necro-powers.
Anyways, LoZ is easily the better series, as much as I love my Final Fantasy. RPGs are popular but remain a niche genre. The Legend of Zelda, well, is a genre. You can copy a FF game, there's nothing like a Zelda game.

This is a tough choice. I'll go with Zelda, because several different RPGs can completely outdo most of the series, while its difficult to think of a Zelda type game outdoing Zelda, although I'm sure there's a couple I just can't think of right now.
Best series will take me some time to figure out, though I'm leaning to either Castlevania or Guilty Gear.
