Maybe you knew or maybe you didn't, but I found this surprising. Mostly on account of never reading the books or watching the movies:

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed that one of her characters, Hogwarts school headmaster Albus Dumbledore, is gay.
She made her revelation to a packed house in New York's Carnegie Hall on Friday, as part of her US book tour.
She took audience questions and was asked if Dumbledore found "true love".
"Dumbledore is gay," she said, adding he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.
The audience gasped, then applauded. "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy," she said.
"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she added, saying Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and his love for Grindelwald was his "great tragedy". |

Heard about this a couple days ago. Some fuckwit decided it'd be clever to reference that one "not gay" Senator's activities in the bathroom with Dumbledore in an editorial cartoon.

Hey, if Larry Craig and Dumbledore can find happiness together, more power to them.
Just as long as Craig finally admits to loving the cock.

Why reveal this now? Is Rowling trying to milk more money from the series?

Probably, because I can't see the relevance of the fact. I mean, Legolas and Luke Skywalker are gay and who cares?

Skywalker wasn't gay. Now, did he like the incest? That's another story.

Yeah, I bet he did. Sorry, that was terrible.

I have read the books, mostly because i wanted to find out what the fuss was about. The series is good but it has been overblown way too much and this revelation of Dumbledore's Sexuality is an example. But hearing this after reading the last book, it makes no sense really. It's not implied in the stories in anyway. I think Rowling was just jerking the fans around.
Oh Christ, the yaoi fan girls are going to have a field day with this X(

Rowling's not resting on her laurels with the Potter books; she's currently working on at least 2 more kid's books.
