I don't listen to much power metal (I'm more of a thrash fan), but I do enjoy Helloween, Dragonforce, Manowar, and Children of Bodom (Though Bodom isn't really power metal lyrically or vocally). I've also been meaning to check out Iced Earth for some time, but haven't gotten around to it for some reason.
So yeah, I'm new, by the way.

I think Maiden played a large role in the development of power metal, but aren't power metal themselves. Kinda like how Led Zeppelin were instrumental in creating metal, but weren't metal (more blues-rock). Maiden rules, but I didn't list them because I don't really consider them power metal.

Wouldn't know about them. I've got a friend who listens to them, and their Wikipedia entry classifies them as power metal, but I haven't heard any of their material and thus am not qualified to say.

Children of Bodom would be really good if they ditched their shitty vocalist and hired someone who would actually sing. How is their frontman differnt from any other person who grunts incoherently and calls it singing?

I do agree with you about the screaming. But the thing is, Alexi Laiho (vocals/lead guitar) writes a generous portion of the music and lyrics, and is also the founding member of Children of Bodom, so if he got jettisoned, CoB would lose, in essence, their most important member. It'd be comparable to Dave Mustaine leaving Megadeth.
Admittedly though, Laiho's vocals aren't as bad as some of the metalcore "singers" out there.

yeah, thrash!!! woooooooooooo

anyway, back to power metal. my favorites are: Dio, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Iron Maiden (i consider them somewhat power metal, what else would they be?), Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, Running Wild, Scorpions, Tribuzy, and Tyran' Pace.

I'm not too big on power metal though, i mostly listen to heavier stuff.

I'm not sure what constitutes "power metal" but I was listening to kamlot this morning.

I listen to blind guardian, iced earth, power symphony, demons and wizards, symphony X, manowar, dragonforce, maiden, priest, rhapsody. malmsteen's rising force. that's what I can remember off the top of my head.

EDIT:

oh yeah and dio if it counts.

Galneryus. A Japanese band. Anyone who likes power metal should really check them out. (The vocals can be a bit engrish at times though)

Nononononono.
Not even close.
By technical definition, The Offspring are "pop-punk".
Heavy metal: Black Sabbath, Pantera, Exhorder, Slayer, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Sadus, Iron Maiden, Dio, Hirax, etc.
Pop-Punk: Green Day, blink 182, etc.

If you want some good metal, my advice is to start with Black Sabbath, then continue from there.
