So, Nintendo's operating loss for this past fiscal year was just under half a billion dollars. This has me worried. I will weep bitter, angry tears if they wind up going the way of Sega.

That said, maybe this will have some good effects, and they'll do a better job of releasing games that people want? I know they don't have the man power to push through much more software than they already do, and I certainly don't want Zelda or Mario to come out so frequently that become as stale and pointless as the yearly CoDs and Maddens that look just like last year's model.

Nintendo's fine. Don't worry.

They're also still dominating both the handheld and console scene in the only market that really matters to them: Japan.

Half a billion dollars is still a crazy amount of money.

The fact that they're aware of their problems (probably better than anyone) and are actively taking steps to turn it around is the best reassurance you could hope for.

Well when you make decisions like releasing GBA and DS games on the Wii U Virtual Console instead of on the 3DS, it's no surprise you're bleeding money out the ass.

What's this about DS titles? Between the two, I've only seen GBA.

I think he meant SNES instead of DS for the WiiU.

Nintendo actually has enough money in the bank to bleed $250 million a year and still last until 2052.

Although, on the off chance Nintendo ever goes out of business, I will probably stop playing video games for life.

Nintendo has over $10 billion in cash, more than $6 billion in other assets, and $0 in debt.

They'll be just fine.

This figure is disputed, but I still find it hard to imagine that even if Nintendo is destined to go bye-bye, it'll be any time soon.

What sucks is that Nintendo is either actually retarded and willfully choosing not to give us unified accounts like every other thing in the entire world, or they don't even fucking know what it is. I don't have to re-buy MP3's when I get a new iPod or phone, I don't even have to re-buy say, Ultima 1, a game from before I was even fucking born if I buy it online and get a new computer. This is 20 fucking 14, and it's a ridiculously embarrassing time to be a Nintendo fanboy. They need to get their shit together in a big fucking way, and this is coming from probably the second biggest Nintendo on this site.

Also, didn't Nintendo have $18 billion in cash in 2012? We can throw numbers around all day but seeing them down that far in such a short amount of time isn't exactly "NO BIG DEAL GUYS." nor is it "END OF THE WORLD GUYS". It sucks though, that's for sure.

Is an operating loss a big deal? Yes.

But their fiscal year ends in March 2014. And in February 2014, they spend $1.1 billion dollars buying back stock from the family of former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamuichi: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-04/nintendo-completes-buyback-as-founding-family-to-sell-shares.html

So without that unexpected expense, Nintendo actually made over $600 million dollars in profit last year.

Nintendo is certainly facing challenges right now, and "just fine" probably isn't an apt way to describe the state of things, but it honestly isn't doomsday over there either.

Yeah, it's a big deal, but not exactly a crusher.

It's like Average Person losing $50 when they have $1,000 in the bank. It sucks, but it's an easily absorbed loss.

I wonder how long it'll be before the people who are so eager to call Nintendo's death will instead get angry that they aren't dead yet.

Nintendo will be putting DS games on the Wii U Virtual Console just like they're currently doing with GBA.

I wish they'd do a 30 cent promotion on GBA/DS games like they did on NES/SNES stuff. I am very, very NOT sold on playing low res games on my gigantic HD TV.

How exactly will DS titles on the Wii U work? Several of them required closing the system to progress at some point or another.

I didn't have any problems playing NES games on my HD TV. How is this different?

I don't know how to articulate it properly, but trust me, it is. There were even DS games that looked worse on the XL than the original DS due to screen size.

I know what you mean. The more details, the more opportunity for it to look jagged/smooshed together or something. The GBA games have a "screen smoothing" option which honestly really helps. I'm all about original graphics but this doesn't change them at all, just literally smooths it out a bit.

I'm guessing it's because the DS supports more colors on screen, which doesn't scale up as nicely. I don't know about you, but I'd love to play Space Invaders Extreme in HD because the PSP and Xbox 360 versions were so mediocre compared to the DS original. I'm also not bothered as much about aliasing and in fact turn off all smoothing options wherever possible.

[Edit]Mario Kart 8 actually has television commercials. This game and the Wii U now have a real chance at success.

For those concerned about Nintendo's coffers: Their annual investor meeting took place today and they reported $11 billion (1.1 trillion yen) in total net assets, which is only slightly down from the last few years (no doubt due in part to the share buyback Syd Lexia mentioned). Someone phone the coroner.
