Hey, we know where our solar system is our galaxy, and where our galaxy is in the observable universe, are there any theories as to where/what the universe is though?

Like this picture... what's outside the observable universe? Where is it? What IS wherever it is? etc...

I realize that anything beyond what we can observe is pure speculation, but that's what I like about the whole question, the scale is mind boggling and it's fun to think about it.

So yeah, what do you think is outside the boundary of the last image?

I like the idea that all realities exist in infinite prallel universes beyond our own universe. There are many different theories and I'm no expert on the subject. I mostly just like to daydream about the cool stuff I'm doing in a parallel universe.

In another universe, I am Batman.
In another universe, I'm boning Scarlett Johansson.
In another universe, I'm the captain of the Enterprise.
In another universe, when I get into an unpleasant situation I just say "Fuck this!" and lightning strikes next to me and my faithful pegasus appears from the smoke and I jump on it's back and fly away.

I try not to think about the horrible things happening to me in other universes.

However, I think I disproved the theory of infinite parallel universes on my way to work this morning. If all possible outcomes occur in at least one of many infinite parallel universes, then there has to be another universe where an alternate me creates a device that lets him travel between universes and he uses it to contact me in this universe. However, that hasn't happened so I must conclude that all possible realities do NOT occur in other universes. It's kind of depressing. And that probably means that our known universe is just a small part of a greater universe that stretches on endlessly.

Anyway, those are my rambling thoughts on the subject. This website is pretty cool: http://htwins.net/scale2/

A crazy theory I have is that our universe is being pulled into a black hole. Obviously, this would be way, way larger than a supermassive black hole. I'll call it an ultramassive black hole. Because of the enormous size of our universe, the process will take billions or trillions of years. As this process happens, the speed of it will increase gradually. This explains the evidence that the universe is accelerating. The dark energy or dark matter, whatever you would prefer to call it is just the black hole causing this acceleration towards the singularity. People have guessed that there might be white holes, but none have ever been observed. I think a white hole is what happens once all of the universe gets pulled into the black hole. There is a big bang type event, which is the reversal of the black hole into a white hole. Everything gets ejected in an enormous explosion and the whole process repeats itself. Stars and galaxies are formed, stars die, some collapse and create black holes, these eventually join together and another ultramassive black hole forms, ad infinitum.

I have no way of proving this and never intend to, but it is something interesting to ponder every several months or years.

Trippy.

I always kind of liked that ending shot of MiB where our universe was inside a marble that a bunch of creatures were playing with, and they had a sack full of similar marbles.

If the universe is bigger than we can observe then who really knows what's going on outside of what we can see/understand... I know it's a moot point really because at the end of the day what does it really matter all the way over/down here (however you want to look at it), but it's something I always wonder about.

If you consider that the atoms that make up the Earth are moving at some speed less than c, then the location of the big bang has to be somewhere within our visible universe. So then there must be some limit to our observable universe that is less than 1.3 billion light years in a straight line from the big bang through us. That is, if straight lines even exist in universal space.

Quick someone grab a really long tape measure!

I wish I could travel to the "edge" and peek beyond, whatever it may or may not be.

Like this, but in space.

The word of a Mayahana buddhist come to my mind wich say that the perception creates the universe and not the other way around. I liked that thought...

Perception does create the universe, in a way.

We all have slightly different realities based on how we perceive that which surrounds us and the choices we make throughout our lives. In that way, we all have our own universe that we create from the time we are born and we are constantly interacting with other people whose universes are colliding with ours and changing our perceptions of our own universe.

I was going to post something stupid about life being like Super Mario World, and how if you really apply yourself and have a dash of luck you'll breeze past all the simple parts of life and eventually find yourself on the star road, but I couldn't think of a way to make it funny. Confused

My favorite is the one where a giant dinosaur goddess takes a giant shit and that shit is our universe. All the parallel universes are the other shits that the dinosaur goddess took. I came up with that one myself.

If you breeze past all the simple parts you still end up at the bowser, which could blow up on you and cause a midlife crisis. (pretty lame, I know)
