I only say top five because I personally havn't played some of the awesome games from back in the N64 hay day like Banjo Kazooie or Perfect Dark. I am comfortable picking a top five based on the games I was able to (and am able to) play, others may have played so many games they can put a top 10 together. Here is my current top 5, may change it as I acquire more games I used to play.

1. Super Smash Bros. - this is number one simply because I have played it the most since so many friends in University wanted to play it, so I got a lot more involved in it lol. Also enjoyed every minute of playing it with 3 other people. I also first saw this game when all we owned was an NES, I wanted SNES, but was in total awe of the N64, and thought this was amazing when I saw my neighbor play it.
2. Super Mario 64 - this is the one that I remember playing at a neighbours house and being in awe every second as previously I had played a ton os SMB1, some SMB2, a solid amount of SMB1 and a bit of Super Mario World. I loved them all, and seeing Mario in 3D as an 8-10 year old was mind blowing.
3. Conker's Bad Fur Day - truthfully, I only played the Live And Reloaded verson on Xbox until acquiring it recently. If I played it back in the day it would probably be number one, but without the nostalgia, or exploring it as much as Mario 64, it can only be at 3. I love it as, for an older game, it plays quite well and feels less dated than many N64 games I've played. It beats the next game on the list simply because I find myself continuously drawn to playing it still, whereas the next one is great but I was able to walk away from it after a couple plays without feeling drawn to it (disclaimer, could be because I traded a bunch of games for it, and didn't pay too much for in box Zelda).
4. Legend of Zelda Occarina of Time. This would be number one on most lists, but I only ever got to play it myself as a kid for 15-30 minutes at place where you could pay a buck or so to play a game in store for 15 min. I saw my friend play the final boss battle with Ganon, and was surprised at the ability of the N64 compared to the games I'd played before. Seemed like a more hard core, sword and shield mario. I've played it since buying it a couple of years ago and you can still feel the quality; it just hasn't gripped me as tight as abraisive and surprising (for a nintendo game) humour of Conker, otherwise it would be ahead.
5. Mario Kart 64 - I grew up with NES and was very familiar with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and that mean old Bowser. They through in a couple pals like Donkey Kong (played the SNES version on Arcade in my grandmas town, as well as original on NES bootleg cart), and good ol' Yoshi who I only got to see when playing Super Mario World at my aunt and uncles. Was never a huge fan of racing games, but getting to use some of my favorite characters, while adding in cool power ups and weapons (triple red shells ftw!!) made it an awesome game that I still play with friends today. Also, one of the only games girls I know actually seem to want to play.
HM: Star Fox 64 - hadn't really played the original when I first rented this as a kid, and man was I blown away. It took me a bit to make to past the first 3-4 levels, but I didn't care, I could have played the first mission for hours. It was the first time I really felt how powerful the newer systems could be, as I didn't think that was possible after personally playing stuff like Top Gun on NES (and seeing the original Star Fox at a friends) not long before.
HM: GoldenEye - Loved this game as a kid, played it probably more than any other when I finally had an N64 back in the day. The only reason it is not in my top 5 is because I bought it again a couple years ago and took it back, it can still be fun with friends, but having been spoiled with dual stick FPS's, I just found it to hard to want to play it for the money. I want to get it again, but these old FPS's just feel outdated and there are many other games that were good back then, that also hold up better for me today.

The reason I don't go up to 10 is I don't want to add arguably lesser games that I played extensively, simply because I was a late adopter of the N64 (Game Cube launched about 2 weeks to a month after I finally got one lol) and thus played a lot of games because my friends had them. I LOVED Road Rash 64 (pet rock is best last-place prize ever) and Turok 2 and 3, as they are arguably not great, but I had nostalgia for them.

I love seeing these lists because everyone's is different for different reasons, What are yours?

1, GoldenEye - I think I've spent more hours playing GoldenEye than any other single game. Great single player in its day, great multiplayer in its day. Still reasonably fun, if not hideous to look at.

2. Wrestlemania 2000 - The first of two THQ/AKI games we got with a CAW (Create-A-Wrestler) feature, and the only one without a horrible game-ruining glitch. Another game I spent about a million hours playing.

3. Majora's Mask - Simply one of the best designed games in the history of gaming. I can't even fathom all the planning that went into this game.

4. Star Fox 64 - Probably the most quotable video game of all-time.

5. Ocarina of Time - An overrated 3D rip-off of LTTP. But as it turns out, an overrated 3D rip-off of LTTP is stil pretty great.

6. Mario Kart 64 - The game that made me care about the Mario Kart series.

7. Bomberman 64 - Great single player, great multiplayer. I love the hell out of this game.

8. Mischief Makers - A damn great game and that's all there is to it.

9. Castlevania - A very polarizing game, but it was fun for what it was.

10. Mario 64 - My least favorite 3D Mario game of all-time, but arguably the most influential 3D platformer of all-time.

I had forgotten a bout some of the games that have been mentioned that I I had played as a kid. I may have to edit my list and make it a top 10.

Everyone's mentioned all the great ones already, especially the myriad of great THQ wrestling games. But somehow, I got a shitload of enjoyment out of Mario Golf. Don't know what it is, as I get nothing from the sport in real life.

And of course, as a sports game guy, I still have my Madden 2002 & NHL 99. There's also the enjoyable Spider-Man game based on the comics & TV show, Excitebike 64 bringing back a classic from the NES, and the Mortal Kombat Trilogy I bought after my PSX version died and I sold that system and all the games I had for that system. I remember a lot of good times electrocuting my friends with Rain.

Otherwise my choices are the familiar Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros, Star Fox 64, and all the THQ wrestling games.

1. Starfox 64 - I think i played this 2 years long, everyday.
2. Smash Bros - Though i prefer Melee, this one was just great in its own right.
3. Ocarina of Time - I loved this game so much back than.
4. Diddy Kong Racing - I was obsessed with this game. I unlocked everything, even the Clock Racer.
5. Goldeneye - Me and my friends played the shit out of this game, either in Singleplayer and Multiplayer.
6. Snowboard Kids - Nobody mentioned this? This game was the killer. Snowboarding as a Ninja on an iceboard down an iceberg . Thats some unmatcherd creativity right there. Had also a great Multiplayer mode.
7. Mischief Makers - Great, unique and underrated game.
8. Mario 64 - Pretty good Mario game, though i prefer 2D Jump and Runs.
9. Banjo and Kazooie - I also played it alot. Nice game. Too bad the franchise went downhill.
10. Mystical Ninja starring Goemon - This one was also damn good. It had Giant Robot battles and really nice fantasy world to explore. Also multiple characters to choose from.

2. Super Smash Bros. (Fighting)
3. Perfect Dark (First Person Shooter)
4. Wave Race 64 (Racing)
5. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Action Adventure)

That's a good mix of the best games from multiple genres.

You know, the N64 is an amazing system. People say it only had a few good games, but it had a lot more than people thought. This list proves it: http://retro-sanctuary.com/Top-100-N64-Games.html

In no particular order....

1.) Goldeneye. What more can be said? It just kicked ass. The go to party game for the elementary school set at the time.

2.) WWF No Mercy. WM2000 could just as easily be here, but I liked the hardcore aspects of No Mercy better. My brother and I played the shit outta this, we were wrestling freaks back then.

3.) Blast Corps. Fun and challenging, an underrated gem. Fun story, I owned this game before I ever owned an n64. In 97 I lurked the video games chat room on AOL asking at least twenty times a day if anyone had an n64 for sale, as they were hard to come by at the time. I had saved my money though and I wanted one bad. Imagine my delight when I finally found someone who said he did, and it was only fifty bucks! I quickly convinced my parents to get a money order for me and sent it out. Maybe a week later I got a response, it was on its way! Had a UPS tracking number and everything! My family was set to go on vacation, but it was set to be waiting for me upon our return! I eagerly anticipated my new arrival, and....
While we were on vacation, every worker at UPS went on strike.

Imagine my innocent childhood grief. Imagine my despair weeks later, after the strike was resolved, and my package arrived, and it seemed a little small. Surely an n64 couldn't fit in that tiny box! And I was correct, it couldn't. I hadn't purchased an n64 for fifty bucks from some anonymous internet denizen. I had purchased Blast Corps.

I did eventually get an n64 for Christmas, but that taught me an early lesson of caveat emptor.

4.) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. A classic, my first real experience with Zelda. I had Zelda 2 on the NES, but apart from thinking the gold cartridge was really cool, I never got anywhere with it.

5.) Mario Kart 64. Unbelievably good times associated with this game that only really matter to me. Let's just say I could play this game with Paradise by the Dashboard Lights as the soundtrack. A different time in my life, gone forever, but remembered just the same through this very fun game. Still worth playing even today.

I can't really think of very many more than I remember fondly. I'm sure there are more, but they don't really hold as much significance.

Nice list. Never knew there was a 2nd Goemon game. Also reminded me of F-Zero X, wich sure made my list.

I didn't think such a list was possible, but there was one omission that disappointed me: Earthworm Jim 3D.

I remember playing Mystical Ninja back when you could rent it at Blockbuster. I thought it was boring as fuck and shut it off after about a half hour and returned it to Blockbuster the next day.

What am I missing here? Or rather, what WAS I missing?

It's a huge game, compared to most N64 games. There are several huge citys to explore with tons of NPC's to talk to. I always had the feel that there is a lot going on while i was playing it. It's just an interesting mix of Free-Roaming RPG and 3D Jump and Run. There are stores, your party gets bigger from city to city, giant bosses, multiple weapons to choose from. I don't wanna say it's the best game ever but it's unique in its own right. It think its also important to get the whacky atmosphere of the game. Maybe, try it again one day and eventually you will know what i mean.

Here is a video for everyone who has never played it.

Great thread. I loved my N64 back in the day, and still play the occasional LoZ:OOT via the Wii. Don't know if I can do a top 10, but here are, at least, top 5 for N64.

1 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2 - Shadows of the Empire
3 - Mario Kart
4 - Crusin World/USA
5 - Doom64
6 - Army Men - Sarges Heroes
7 - Rogue Squadron
8 - SoutPark Rally

...yeah not quite 10, but close enough.

......I'm not even supposed to be here today!
