I've realized that not only have I never played any of the RPGs on the Genesis, I essentially know nothing about them. I was a SNES kid, and I am well versed in the RPGs on that system, but I'm completely ignorant of the games being played in that same era by those crazy jokers who did what nintendon't.
What's out there, what's worth playing, and why?

Shining Force games
Phantasy Star games
Landstalker (if it counts)
Shining in the Darkness
Faery Tale Adventure
Eye of the Beholder
SUPER HYDLIDE (lol)
And that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Eye of the Beholder is on Sega CD, and I would avoid Landstalker due to it being horrible. Also, I've heard that Beyond Oasis is good, but I've never heard it.

I assume Eye of the Beholder is just a port of the GoldBox game?
Where would you recommend starting?

I would avoid CamWin's opinion due to it being horrible. Almost everyone I've talked to fucking loves Landstalker, you're high as balls. But I guess I shouldn't expect much from someone who's first RPG was Pokemon
Also, one of the Might and Magic games is on Genesis, can't remember which. If you like those games, I'm sure it's a good port.

I used to love Phantasy Star 2, back when I was a kid that game blew me away, and I was more of an SNES guy.

I'm not sure if there was a Heroes of Might and Magic game on Genesis, but the precursor to Shining Force, Shining in the Darkness was very similar to HoMaM.

King's Bounty is essentially a proto-HoM&M.

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (side-scrolling and actiony, like the non-overworld portions of Zelda II. Though I've only played the SNES version).
Shadowrun (maybe)
Definately Phantasy Star IV. Back in High School I distinctly remember trading a friend my 5th edition City of Brass in exchange for borrowing his Genesis and PS IV until I'd beaten the game. No regrets.
Crusader of Centy
Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun

Calm thy tits. If you want to get technical, my first RPG was Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on NES, though I don't see anything wrong with Pokemon being my first turn-based RPG considering I got it when I was seven. Also, I primarily don't like Landstalker because it has some of the worst controls ever and the isometric perspective makes platforming insanely difficult. The Might and Magic port is okay, though it's probably the hardest Wizardry-esque game I've ever played.

I've wanted to buy a Genesis again lately. Mostly because I want to play some Mutant League Hockey on a big screen, though, heh. My buddy put the idea in my head when he said they're selling them at Half Price Books.

Mutant League, I'm so glad you brought that up! I used to favor Mutant League Football, althought both are great games. I used to love calling the nasty c audible and killing the fuck out of that fat ref, especially after the he had been paid to call bullshit penalties over and over.

Hehe, yeah, both good games. I just loved skating up and down the ice with a chainsaw. I found it hilariously satisfying.

I believe the only Genesis RPG I've played is Phantasy Star II. I never did beat it. I found it kind of hard to get into. I never got that far into it. I think I got to the point where Nei was killed by some Nei look-alike or something. Anyway I think I just played it too late in life. I grew up playing mostly NES and SNES games. So I think there was just no nostalgia factor to really draw me in. I think the game itself is okay, but it seems like a repetitive grind-fest at times.

Did Gain Ground have any RPG elements? It's been so long since I've played it, but I remember liking that gane as a kid.

The ten stages of playing Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis:
1 - "Hey, you know what game was awesome? Shadowrun. I should play that."
2 - "I'm playing Shadowrun. This is awesome! I can't wait until I can do net runs and fuck up some corps."
3 - "Wow, this game is hard as hell. Time to do some grinding."
4 - "More grinding. Fuck, this is boring."
5 - "These mages and vampires are starting to piss me off."
6 - "Okay, I'm at a decent level. I can run some nets and survive the mean streets of Seattle. This game is getting fun again. Time to advance plot and head to Indian lands."
7 - "Holy shit, hellhounds!"
8 - "GOD DAMN SHIT MOTHERFUCKING HELLHOUNDS!"
9 - "Okay, this shit is making no sense now. What happened to the plot? And why are all the runs the same?"
10 - "Yeah, I'm never playing this again"
(6 months later, return to step 1)
Shadowrun is an okay game, and does an excellent job of showing off the game and the setting (something a lot of RPGs do not do well at all), but it's balls hard, way too grindy and repetitive, and you never can really get the experience of putting a team together because aside from one optional guy who joins for free (and you're likely to share his skillset and be better, so why take him?), every potential partner takes off when you die, and raises their prices to rehire them to boot. I find it fun as hell, though - if you can stand the grinding for cash and stats. And the fucking hellhounds.

Lunar was pretty good if I remember right. I didn't play it much though, and it might've been for the Sega CD.
Anyone remember Sword of Vermilion?

This thread has gotten me to check out Shadowrun, a game that I had only seen ads for in game magazines back in the day, but never looked into it.
From what I've seen in Youtube, reviews and general word of mouth, it seems pretty cool. Never knew it was an RPG until now. I might give it a try sometime.
EDIT: Tried Sword of Vermilion once. No sir, didn't like it.

That's too bad, I was hoping someone may have fond memories if it so I would have a reason to revisit it. I don't remember much about it other than it having three different views depending on where you were at.
