A woman who went to China's Changsha Central Hospital complaining of "itching" in the left side of her head was told by doctors that the source of irritation was a spider that had been living inside her ear canal for five days.
Doctors reportedly used a saline solution to flush out the spider, in order to avoid having the spider burrow deeper inside the canal or biting her.
The flushing technique was successful and the woman reportedly wept with gratitude after being told the spider was removed. Doctors say they believe the spider entered the woman's home while it was undergoing renovations and crawled into her ear while she was sleeping.
A report by CNN states that spiders and others bugs are appearing in greater numbers this summer due to warm weather and drought conditions across the U.S.
"All insects are cold-blooded, so in extreme heat they develop quicker, which results in more generations popping up now compared to previous summers," Jim Fredericks, an entomologist and wildlife ecology expert with the National Pest Management Association, told the network. |

This story would have been better if the spider had laid eggs inside her ear canal and hundreds of baby spiders crawled out while she was sleeping, so she could wake to her face covered in spiders.
Also, this thread reminds me of one of my favorite photos:
Enjoy!

The fact that that is a jumping spider, an extremely active, predatory, non-web building spider makes me doubt the authenticity of this. The only reason a jumping spider would stay in someone's ear canal for five days is if it were stuck, dead, or if the woman was constantly (like 24/7) poking things in there to harass it so it couldn't leave. Spiders don't "burrow" into the flesh of any animal, nor would they be able to gain sustenance from feeding on human flesh. Also that last pic is a pretty well known scare 'shop.
Also, this happened in China, so why is there a blurb about U.S. insects at the end? Also also, if you want to give your already shaky story credibility, you probably shouldn't use the phrase "Spiders and other bugs" in your story because A. Spiders are not bugs, they're not even insects. They're arachnids, totally different thing completely. B. 'Bug" is a term which refers to a very specific (if large) sub-family of insect, it is not a catch-all term for anything with six or more legs, despite popular public use. And you could argue that the author was just simplifying for the obviously not smart enough to know the difference audience, but then that makes you seem ignorant as a writer and destroys your credibility...on a story about a spider actively invading and living in someone's ear, an incredible old urban myth. I'm surprised they didn't claim the spider laid eggs in there too.
You guys want to be scared by crawly things that invade your body, look up Bot Flies.

You know, I hate to say it, but so have I.
I saw an edited picture of that big one with all the babies where it was a command and conquer game where you controlled all the little ones and the big one was a boss you were trying to defeat. It was actually pretty funny.
I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere.

This reminds me of an episode of Trauma: Life in the ER, where a girl had a roach stuck in her ear. I thought it was kinda funny.
That spider in that pic looks damn scary though...sure wouldn't want THAT being stuck in MY ear...

Bot flies are fucked up. I saw a video on them once that showed one that was in someone's arm or leg and it was moving under the skin... man was that disturbing. Plus, there is a human bot fly, which is a variation just for doing that to humans... ugh.

Yeah seriously, those flies alone are the reason I am really hesitant to ever go to South America. I already fear maggots to the point of shrieking like a girl if I even see one near me, I am NOT having them live in my flesh.

Flies that can burrow their way into your skin and lay eggs.
From wikipedia:
The human botfly occasionally uses humans as the host to its larvae. The larva, because of its spines, can pose an extremely painful sub-epidermal condition. Removal processes include placing raw meat on to the area, which in theory will coax the larva out. Another option is to use the tree sap of the matatorsalo, found in Costa Rica, which is reputed to kill the larva, yet leave its body in the skin.Additionally, one can attempt to seal the breathing hole of the larva with nail polish or vaseline and then, after a day, squeeze out the suffocated, dead larva. Use of adhesive tape can work, but carries additional risk of infection because portions of the larva's breathing tube can be broken off by the tape and make the remainder of the body difficult to remove.
Now check your PM.

Wasn't there a story of a dude with some kind of bug living in his belly button years back? I want to say it was a spider too, and that he fed it, but I can't remember.
