Why haven't we changed the registration system at all?
Adding catchpa, changing the anti bot question, or stuff like that.
It wouldn't be hard to write a script to automatically make accounts based on how the registration system works ATM.

We have talked about options. Nothing has ever come of the discussion.

The main discussion was upgrading the board software in general, which hasn't been updated once since being installed, but it's a pain. Honestly, 1-3 bots per day isn't so bad.
You should have seen the early days where we got like 50 per day. And they were spamming porn.
At this point, I am more interested in fixing the wiki, as the wiki is way worse shape, and we had to disclude membership to the point that no one uses it.

I think I'd miss the bots if they were gone.

Alright, what's fucked up with the wiki?
I'm not a GP on the tech scale, but I'd like to help

It's painfully out of date. It has never been updated.

Does one need special access to update the wiki, or is a full community thing?
And the bots, is it too difficult to put in a different question/ randomize it?

I don't think changing the question is particularly hard, randomization might be.
Sometimes the best way to fix something is to start over
I know the issue was upgrading = broken wiki
But why not just restart the wiki? We can copy the code for key pages, and leave it to a certain people. actually, I'll run some software to mirror the wiki pages and we can go from there and you can host a download for the mirror and when people want pages back they can make it themselves
Why not just did what you did with the blog software, keep it on the site but build a new one.
can't help but feel this is easily fixable with a minor amount of pain

I can't fix something unless I know it is broken. What specifically needs fixing with the wiki?
As for the forums being updated... That is Syd's call.

I think spam bots for those too...
Isn't there some IP filtering we can do?

The Wiki needs to be updated to the latest version of WikiMedia or WikiCommons, or whatever it is. If there are template sets we can import, we could probably use some of those too.

Then let's get on it.
Worst case scenario you end up having to scrap the old wiki like the old blog software

Perhaps there are people who don't want to see that stuff disappear. Who still uses the wiki?

See, it wouldn't disappear. the old blog is still there. You can go all the way back to the very first news post.
I was saying that as a "worse case scenario" in case things get so fucked up during the move recovering it is nigh impossible

Me for one. I just updated the games owned list on my page, not that that's crucial information.

I went on to update my own page for the first time ever a month or two ago and I couldn't figure out how to even do it. So I gave up. Since I had never worked on a wiki before I figured I was just retarded, but now I see what happened. I'm looking forward to being motivated enough to try again.

Ok... so we need to fix some permissions issue. Not that big of a deal. I'll look into it.

When Syd popped into the IRC and I asked him he just said it was painfully out of date, and that'd he'd need your help to upgrade it GP.

Editing should be back on for all registered users.
Account creation is still turned off. If you want an account, get in touch with Syd or myself.

How is the wiki software? Would we benefit by updating to a newer version?
