Yeah, I've done a few midnight releases of movies. I forget what though. |
For me it was the LotR trilogy, and the SW Prequel trilogy. Oh, and a couple of Harry Potter movies I think.

For me, it was mostly stuff IMAX stuff, just because we could.
Thursday night was MTG draft night, so we'd be at draft until like 9 or so. Then we'd hit up Chili's, and then IMAX. I'm pretty sure we saw 300 and maybe Superman Returns, and I can't remember what else.

Figured I'd share my Skyrim midnight release experience:
I went to the midnight release after finding out the store in the mall we had our preorder at wasn't going to be opening for it and instead would be handing out their copies at the store down the road. My brother and I get there to find out the dude who is supposed to have the list of preorders from the mall is not there yet (mind you we didn't get there until 11:30 pm) so there is a line of people waiting for him to show up. We decided to wait since it wasn't yet midnight and figured maybe it would get sorted out in a few minutes. Meanwhile we look around and see a group of people dressed up in costumes swinging wooden weapons and using big shields wrapped in aluminum foil. We laughed at it, and even more so when the cops rolled up and seemed unable to figure out why anyone would do such a thing.
Around 11:55 pm they started lining up all the people who ordered at the mall in one line and the people who had ordered at this store and had finished their transaction in another. Realizing they weren't planning on letting anyone from the mall get their copies anytime soon, we decide that since Wal-Mart is right next to this Gamestop we'd actually get a copy there, even with their crappy electronics service, faster than continuing to wait on Gamestop.
So at 12:15 or so we walked out of Wal-Mart with our copy to find the line of people who had ordered at the store was already gone and had their copies while the mall line hadn't moved an inch yet.
All in all it was yet another unpleasant experience with Gamestop. It isn't the first time they've fucked up a preorder on me, I've had them guarantee release day arrival on two online preorders only to get them three to four days late before, but I gave them another chance since it wasn't an online order. I can honestly say I'd rather spend 10 minutes explaining to the Wal-Mart midnight electronics guy what the difference between a PS3 copy and a PC copy is and how it is able to be sold since it is now midnight, than deal with another Gamestop preorder.

My experience was this: Got there at 10:45, there was about ten people in front of me (that had pre-ordered at least), was stuck behind two guys that were having a philosophical stoner debate on time travel and if their plants would grow or some stupid shit. In front of them were the over dramatic drama kids, the ones that thought they would make it in drama school and not end up as interpretative dance people. They were also the most annoying fucks in the world.
So I stood there and waited, listened to the insane rabble of how "I'm a wood elf and I'll kill you with my MIND" from the drama kids, stoner guys talked about how they wanted to build a TARDIS in their garage, behind me was a kid crying to his girlfriend about how he loved her but this was more important then hanging out with her in the morning. Me, I was playing Final Fantasy II for the entire hour and fifteen minutes.
I go into the store to pay it off at 11:30 because the guys came around and asked if anyone hadn't yet. As a result, half the people there found out I got the Collectors Edition, so they all gathered around me as I paid it off. The guys working there asked if I wanted to take a look at the box and statue and everything. For the last half hour we took it out of the box, looked at all the contents and then put it back in. By then it was 11:59, so they gave me the box and I ran the hell out of there.

I was hoping the Gamestop here would do a midnight release of Skyward Sword, but looks like they won't.
You know, biggest Nintendo game ever. Not like people won't be lined up for it.

Last time I checked a midnight release for the 20th would be 12 AM Sunday.
So HA! Not a school night.

There's no 12 AM. There's 0 AM, and 12PM.

A Sunday morning release? That's fairly abnormal. You win again Hacker.
