Compliments of the University of Sydney

To make graphene paper, raw graphite is milled and purified using a chemical bath, which reshapes its structure, allowing it to be pressed into thin sheets. These graphene sheets boast excellent thermal, electrical and mechanical properties – including excellent hardness and flexibility.

Graphene offers many advantages over steel – it’s two times as hard, six times lighter and ten times higher in tensile strength. This translates into a next-gen material that could immensely benefit the automotive and aviation industries. Lighter planes and cars use less fuel and create less pollution. Companies such as Boeing have already begun using carbon-based materials, so graphene paper would be the next logical step.

Raw graphite is a relatively plentiful material in Australia, where the research is being conducted. The researchers welcome the industry boost that increased demand for raw graphite for graphene paper would provide.

So they finally started to make this shit?

I remember hearing about this about a year to two years ago. They are saying that it might replace silicon and has the potential to revolutionize the materials we use in regular construction.

nice. i wonder how cost effective it is in the short run. obviously, the long run cost effect will nullify any expense in the short run, but im still curious to see what the numbers are.

What suddenly popped in my head is the idea of making paper airplanes out of that stuff; we could then shoot them into the eyes of terrorists the world over.

Sure why not? Or just call it whatever they call thin sheets of plastic, or sheets of metal. "Paper" implies it's going to be used for writing things on.

I found it misleading too. I was wondering why we needed paper that could be used to defend yourself from a minor explosion.

What about paper towels, paper cups, paper napkins and paper plates? Those are not for writing on, but you can write on them. I think the confusing thing is that paper is, as far as I am concerned, a product made from plants or trees.

this is the question we're all really thinking, i hope so.

also the 'future' is always here, the future is simply human perception. in essence the concept of future is simply an illusion created from the eyes of the observer,
