If we move news out of the General Forum, there's nothing left, really. There's senseless polls, which people also post in the two private forums, and then there's people talking about their personal problems, which they'd be smart to post in the private forums.

I want to take a more technical approach to this discussion. I have created a table of all of the general forum posts from about 5 minutes ago. I categorized them into a few general categories:
News = General News
Tech = IT related discussion/Help/Tech News
Game = Any type of thread that has repeat access, making it more of a game to reply than a conversation
Forum Conversation = Chit chat
Birthday = Could be a game, but kept it separate
Joke = Threads that are posted only for amusement, not really there for conversation or heavy thought.

News needs to be filtered and catagorized into one long thread to prevent any individual from learning about something that he/she never intended to. Consider the following graph:
Clearly this is an issue that cannot be resolved simply by creating another subforum and needs to be addressed on a broad scale. My suggestion is to form a committee elected by the forum that meets on a bi-annual or semi-bi-annual basis to help research the cause of the problem and suggest the appropriate plan of action.

General Discussion seems like a perfect place for news stories already. I don't particularly think a news subforum is necessary; people just need to more judicious on what makes a news story worth sharing on this site. Also, rather than just linking a story and leaving, the poster should add something to the conversation. If you feel a story is worth linking, you must have some sort of opinion on it. Share that as well as the story. The majority of the time people did do all of this, but sometimes you'd see several stories from one person in one day that just posted links.
I think it's an issue that can be solved with a little bit of communication to the forumers, rather than a big change to the site's organization. One dedicated news thread is obviously not the answer, either.

Yeah. If news stories were, I don't know, 67% of General Discussion, there'd be an argument for a split. But that's not the way it is. Having more forums dilutes the potency of the forums. We currently have three major forums (Toys, Sports, Reading) with less topics and less overall posts than Feedback. Further subdividing when the current traffic doesn't necessitate it just makes the forums seem less active and less interesting to prospective new members.
Streamlining is key. Having 50 boards on a site of this size would be noobish.
