I just bought a copy of Yoshi's Island from a used game store today but im system doesnt play it. Ive done the obvious, rubbed the connector pins with rubbing alcohol and q tips several times, but still it wont work. I turn the system on, it gives me a nintendo sign and i hear the "ding" but its unreadable and theirs a bunch of random colors that appear.

Then sometimes i do get to the opening theme and i can hear the audio fine but i see this

Any Suggestions? The cart doesnt look damaged but the screws look worn down but maybe its just that someone changed the save battery. Im sad Sad

I'd take that game back and throw it across the counter.

Typically they should offer some sort of a return policy, so get your money or store credit. Or you can see if it works on one of their machines, assuming they have one to test it on.

put the cart halfway in. also try it at a slight angle. I know this sounds weird, but it works for the regular NES, and sometimes it helps with the genesis games.

also look to see if the pins are corroded. they can be as clean as they want, but if they're damaged, you ain't playin' dat game.

Invest in one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Game-Bit-3-8-MM-Tool-NES-SNES-N64-Cartridge-GameBit-/270695795299?pt=Video_Games_Accessories&hash=item3f06ba0a63
Then, open the cart and take an eraser to the pins, once done do the usual cleaning with a q-tip and half distilled water and half alcohol. I do this with every game I purchase and then I place them in a cover and inside my UGC. Never had a problem, but I guess you could return it if you are into taking the easy way out.

If you get a pink pet eraser, you don't really need to open the cartridge up, as it's angled nicely to fit in there. That's not gonna help if the pins are nasty and corroded from sitting in a box in someone's basement for a few years before being traded in for some spare cash to buy a cheeseburger by some stoner who grew out of kid games and into Call of Duty.

You'll rarely need to open up a cart but it does make cleaning it that much easier. Or if you feel like screwing with a friend. Side Story: While working at the store my buddy called and asked for me to hold him a copy of Super Mario Kart. I switched out the board for some Barbie game and I waited for a phone call. 10 minutes later I got a call..."FUCK...YOU."

Yeah, works good. We have to do the same trick at my job for the ribbon cables on some of our oven control boards, they get coated in grease and malfunction(I work maintenance for public housing, as you might imagine our tenants cook with a lot of fucking grease.)

Was that the only Yoshi's Island cart they had? See if you can find another one.
