I think that statement is poorly worded. I'm not even sure what it really is trying to convey, but I read it as the underground areas being similar to SMB3.

The other thing I can think of is one of the Dark World levels has that quicksand pit that you can fall through.

Yeah, the one that immediately springs to mind is the quicksand area in World 8-2. Isn't there another area hidden under quicksand somewhere in World 2?
I definitely can't think of any fake bottomless pit you can jump down and find a secret room.

There is one in 8-2 but it super hard to get to. You have to go through the whole game without dying, getting any power ups or coins, and beat every stage in under an hour. Then, when you get to the pit with all the music blocks in 8-2, you fall down the pit and there's a secret room. In the room, there's a secret mushroom house and toad gives you a Yoshi suit. Then if you beat bowser with the Yoshi suit, you start a new game with all Yoshi suits in your inventory.

Doing this without a controller locked to your NES gives you the Dark Yoshi Suit. There have been rumors that there is also a Gold Yoshi Suit if you beat the game without a NES console. Also, unlock the Bowser Suit by not playing the game.

Then if you collect 100 rings and beat the last level without spin-dashing you get the Aeris suit.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you have to catch a Mew in Pokemon Blue first without using a Game Shark.
