Dear America
please adopt the metric system it really is a simpler, far more fantastic way of measuring well... all things weight, volume, length .
that way I wont need to know that there are 28g in 1oz and 29mL in one fl oz
and I hate how when I read some american recipes they dont always specify between fluid ounces and ounces by weight which could be a critical mistake when making a roux! if we could all just sit down, use the same form of measuring stuff... the world would be great, its time for you guys to join us, join the dark side of the force
|
Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

I use the metric system. I love it. It feels so modern. In fact, the metric system is standard where I live. (Australia)

most phones and ipods have an app for converting to other systems of measurement. they're free.

I'd be fine if they switched it because you have to learn it in school anymore. I'm comfortable enough with it that if we switched today I'd only have to relearn a couple things. To be honest I probably know metric better than Imperial because I couldn't tell you how many feet are in a mile but I could tell you how many meters were in a kilometer. It is kinda sad to be honest, it is just that I never have any need to know that and since it probably isn't some round number I'd never remember it for very long anyway.

Yeah, the Metric System sucks. The only things it's good for are physics and chemistry.

The imperial system just seems barbaric. Measuring lengths with your foot? Measuring weight with rocks?
(If it's not clear, I have no idea how the imperial system works )
Once you go metric, you never go back...tric

The Fahrenheit scale is more useful for measuring everyday temperatures because of the way that the degrees are calculated. Centigrade is more useful for large-scale changes in temperature for the same reasons.

FunFact: Imperial measurement is actually an anti-immigration measure. People who want to come here get tired of learning 12 inches in a foot and 5,280 feet in a mile, and just say "Fuck it".
I mean, really, if we went to metric, we'd have a nonstop flood of people.

I wish we would set a goal to convert to the metric system over the next 10 years.
Of course it would take more than a century to make the full conversion, but we could make the majority of adjustements within 10 years.
Start with packaging measurements, then street signs, weights at the Dr. Office and focus in education. Over time, new building codes and measures could all be metric, and American automotive builders.
It would be expensive, but in the long run, it seems easier to all speak the same language with regard to units of measure.

To me, centigrade feels a lot more geared towards measurements of weather based temperature. Generally, it feels in sync with how we perceive certain temperatures to be. (zero cetigrade or less is freezing, 10-20 centigrade is cold, 20-30 is warm, 30-40 is hot, 40 and over is madness)
For the same purpose, Fahrenheit feels like it starts and ends at a random number.

Fahrenheit is usually a scale that works well for weather because it is usually a 100 point scale across our livable conditions.
Anything below 0 or above 100 is not livable.
Of course there is a fuzzy margin on the floor and ceiling there, but that is the basics of (F).

if the world should generalize a measure system they should probably invent a new one wich is like really really easy to get into.

hey, after that we should all agree to speak english world wide. it's totally a better language than everything else.
after that, lets start adapting everyone's cultures around the world to all be the same. conformity is a lot easier than individuality.

This.
Fuck the Metric System.
You know who else wanted everyone to be the same? Hitler.
I bet he used the Metric system too.

If someone tried to MAKE me use the metric system, I'd beat them to within an inch of their life...I don't have one ounce of patience for that crap.

Wanna know why Metric sucks? Gas prices. Sure, there tends to be less driving on in most metric countries (better public transportation and whatnot) but damn, you guys pay a shit ton for gas by the liter whereas we pay less by the gallon (1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liter). Want proof? (These Prices are as of the 3rd and are in Gallons)
Belgium: $7.49
France: $7.24
Germany: $7.42
Italy: $7.26
Netherlands: $7.98
UK: $7.33
US: $3.31
Sorry for those inquisitive minds out there, but I could not find Canada or Australia.

You know, I bet your hate for metric comes from the fact that you have always used another system and hate change. Besides, using the same system would be a whole lot simpler. Also, Usa, we use Metric and we aren't flooded with undesirable people.

Holy shit on the gas prices. Made me look up some more.
Check this out for a huge list. The top one is $9.24 a Gallon.
