http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/01/alcohol.harm/index.html?hpt=P1&iref=NS1
Full Story here.

The actual study here. Breaks it down and shows the grading a little more.
(Thanks GP for a working link)

tl;dr
Quote:
On a scale of 1 to 100, Alcohol ranked 72. Beating Heroin (55) and Crack Cocaine (54).
Ecstacy scored a 9.

Heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine were the most harmful drugs to individuals, the study says, while alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the most harmful to others.

The Lancet article was co-authored by David Nutt, a professor and Britain's former chief drug adviser, who caused controversy last year after he published an article saying ecstasy was not as dangerous as riding a horse.

Found this pretty interesting. Seems to be a lot of bashing on Alcohol compared to other drugs lately. With that said, who knows, California might get Legalized for pot and spread across the country.

Sweet, booze is number 1. Suck it, heroin.

Seems like alcohol is so high on the list because it's legal. They factor in how harmful a drug is to the person using and others, and alcohol use is far more widespread than heroin. Plus, people on H don't generally go driving like fucking maniacs after shooting up. They stay home if they can help it.

Alcohol also has a particularly insidious addictive quality. It's subtle, long-term, and hereditary.

Plus, it ruins your judgment. Using heroin might take away your judgment, but leaves you probably in no state to successfully get out of your driveway.. When you're drunk, driving drunk not only doesn't come off as a bad idea, it seems like a good idea.

Fuck you guys, stop talking shit about my beloved booze! Mad

In all seriousness, yeah booze can be really bad if you abuse it, but so can all the other things people abuse for recreational / self medicating purposes. It's all about moderation, drink a couple of beers, not a 24 case, smoke a little weed at the occasional Dave Matthews concert, not two eighths every day, just smoke a pinch of PCP to give yourself the edge to win at tonight's underground fight event, don't go on a five day shurm bender and end up cannibalizing your roommate before wondering the streets naked screaming and covered in blood! Oh, Big Lurch... what a rascal.

Seriously, there's some stilted science in that article, but really, we need to face facts here: because of the alternating stigmatization and glorification of alcohol and the relentless pushing of cigarettes despite their soaring prices, America's legal vices are potentially some of the worst for it's citizens. Personally, I think that the prop in California is going to tank, for now, but give it a few years. After that, well, as goes California, so goes the rest of the country, right?

Yeah... prohibition ain't happening again. Not in this country. It spawned crime everywhere. In fact, the reduction of crime after prohibition is one of the reasons I think so many are eager to see marijuana become legal.

Of note, Boardwalk Empire is based on the prohibition time period and is a slow, but excellent show.

That's not true, heroin doesn't make you all that incapable. In fact, I once knew a guy who could handle a shotgun like an ace after a heroin binge.

Perhaps. But the stuff makes you effing crazy. I'm not saying nobody drives high on H, but while you're under it's influence you're probably not thinking about going for a spin.

Pretty much. Not too many mothers or fathers in suburbia pounding down angel dust 'til their hearts explode. That's why I don't like the Libertarian idea of "legalize everything, but tax it (the one thing Libertarians want taxed, go figure)." Illegalizing the stuff isn't going to get rid of it, but it keeps supplies under control, and keeps people from openly wandering around on powerful drugs.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Like others have mentioned, alcohol is probably ranked so high because it's extremely widespread, and alcoholism can be hereditary. At least it can be safe to consume in moderation, but some people can't even do that.

I agree with the idea that if coke or H were legal, they'd be much worse.
I mean, in Canada one of the worst things we have is a big coke ring in B.C right now. (Why? I dunno, because you'd think their weed would be good enough...)
According to the specials and articles on it, it was found out because people would get all coked up and start driving around. They felt indestructable, which they, their car, the other car and the other person, obviously weren't.

Also: if they legalized everything, could you imagine if there was another ecstacy craze? People would be dancing and hugging and the sale of strobelights would sky-rocket!

I tried X once right around the time it was becoming popular, all I did was tweak the fuck out and dance to stupid ass music for something like ELEVENTYBAJILLION hours. Then I spent a few days feeling like absolute crap for a week (however that works), but a little tiny part of the back of my mind wanted me to do it again. Fuck Ecstasy, and anyone who does it / sells it.

Isn't Ecstasy the one where you have to drink a lot of water or else you die?
