TL; DR; a charioteer earned enough to feed the entire Roman army for one year, totaling out to $15 billion American in today's money.

...and this dude didn't jump ship to Sicily to form up a super-team with the other top chariot racers of his day.

Impressive that he and anyone else doing this lived long enough to earn that much.

You have to wonder how that's even possible. Apparently he did have sponsorships from large businesses, but still......you'd think they'd still only pay the racers so much. That means his winnings probably came mostly from winning races. But even then, how could the racing governing body raise that much money to pay out? Unless the stadiums held like 1,000,000 people and charged $15,000 per ticket.

I'm not denying the truthfulness of the article......just marveling at how someone could acquire that kind of wealth as an athlete. Even in today's world of Nike Ads and Sports Drink sponsorships, no athlete comes anywhere close to that.

Government sponsorship, probably. Governments will dictatorships back then and had most of the money. You know why you don't see more pyramids, castles, and colisseums these days? Easy. Because resources are privately owned instead of state-owned, and slavery is frowned upon.
