I just saw this movie last night as well, coincidentally enough. I loved it! I would have liked more closure in the ending, but eh. The video game references were amazing, and I was absolutely blown away by how they managed to make a movie *look* like a comic, without making it look bad. The jump cuts were quick but never annoying or sick-inducing, and the shots were dressed and framed beautifully. Very well written to. Overall, easy 4.5/5 from me. Loved it, would see again in a heartbeat.

I remember the sequence of shots you're referencing, where like he's at home, then a party.. then a restaurant etc... back to back to back.
I think that was done to illustrate him spacing out at those events, because his mind was on ramona. That's how he was experiencing those events. Like he'd just suddenly appear at a party, beucase he didn't really remember going there, since he was thinking about her. (or when he just thumbing one note on his guitar during their practice)
I did like the films many references it's nice to see that as a gamer. I was thinking about posting here the different games they did.
Here's a starting list:
1.) Clash At Demonhead (NES game, I liked it, but strange and difficult)
2.) Mario (with the sound of the new life he got when he died to Gideon.. reminded me of that).
3,)Double Dragon (The music battle when the twins created those two dragons, reminded me of that instantly)
4.) Mortal Combat (The Finish Him)
5.) Sonic (With the coins that kept popping out, also reminded me of arcade games in general all the coins you put into them)
6.) Pac man (obvious.. he talks about him plenty of times)
7.) DDR (with the whole Ninja Ninja Revolution game)
Those are what I caught and I know there has to be many others but those are the ones off hand that i remember catching... I only saw the movie once. If anyone caught others be sweet to hear it.
I personally liked the ending, I liked how at the end verse Nega Scott (aka evil scott) it wasn't a fight they had but a talk. That was much better than just giving us another fight, which is what everyone expected.
I don't mind the open ended ending of Scott and Ramona just walking off together to start a life.
The other thing I appreciate was the refreshing style it was very unorthodox, and just that alone, regardless the content of the film, it was nice to have that change of pace and tempo.... really rejuvenating.

What's with the age cut off... , and I'm glad you liked it. 30 you can't see this... 19 forget it. I honestly think the age range is huge if you don't get the gaming references as a kid you'd like the fight scenes and the crazy Asian chick. I think a 15 yo, would enjoy it. I bet you guys caught a lot of gaming references so I'm curious what you can add to that list.

There's a LOT you missed, and I'm guessing it has to do with your age. For starters, I'm sure you looked up Clash at Demonhead to seem smart cause 1. It's pretty obscure, and 2. You made no reference to the fact their fucking band was called "Sex Bob-omb" as a video game reference.

Hey, I'm 22 years old, and like i said I own and have played Clash at Demonhead many years ago as kid. Bob-omb that'd be mario.. the little bad guys... I played Mr. Bomberman as well, but i don't think there was anything called Bob-ombs in that game.
If i looked up that, i'd have looked up more. I haven't looked up any of the game references...
I know the pee bar is something, but i can't put my finger on what game it would come from.

That was supposed to be River City Ransom. Plus, Sonic was rings, and they didn't come from destroyed enemies.
Honestly, the way you talk, when you clearly know nothing...your words do not obfuscate your ignorance, no matter how hard you try.
And the pee bar is nothing but a pee bar. Though the Sims had one.

That's sad to miss that... Since it's one of my all time favorite multi-player nintendo games.

I looked it up and i was right, that was the name of the little bomb guys in Mario. So i don't understand your comment.
Also my references were done off my childhood memories, that's why they're not perfect. I am disappointed in not catching that river city ransom one. That's too bad.
My friend guessed Sims, as well for the Pee bar, but i wasn't sure.

JonSnow, you had better be careful about angering Syd with your misuse of the Quote tag.
Quotes have a single line break after them, not two. Or Syd murders people.

In the spirit of this list, I'll post up another one, and i'll keep editing this one, to compile the list. If you can refrain from just looking them all up, be more fun to post one's we caught.
The format is as follows. Name of the game, references in movie to the game, and a list of names that showed the clues, the order of the names listed correspond to the order of the reference noticed. So # 2 (since it goes Snow, Jeebus) shows Snow heard a 1 up sound that sounded like mario, and Jeebus pointed out the band name reference. If there is x(some integer) next to a name, then they provided that many clues in a row for that reference, see #9.
1.) Clash At Demonhead (NES game, I liked it, but strange and difficult) Snow
2.) Mario (with the sound of the new life he got when he died to Gideon.. reminded me of that, as Jeebus said Sex-Bob-omb referenced the little bomb enemies). Snow, Jeebus
3,)Double Dragon (The music battle when the twins created those two dragons, reminded me of that instantly) Snow
4.) Mortal Combat (The Finish Him) Snow
5.) River City Ransom (With the coins that kept popping out, also reminded me of arcade games in general all the coins you put into them.) UsaSatsui
6.) Pac man (obvious.. he talks about him plenty of times) Snow
7.) DDR (with the whole Ninja Ninja Revolution game) Snow
8.) Sims (The pee bar) UsaSatsui
9.) Zelda (Had Zelda music, and Gideon had a triforce necklace, ramona had a triforce chip, and Neil was playing Link to the past, Faerie Fountain music during dream sequence)Snow, ThunderHorsex3 Jeebus
10.) Crash 'n the boys street challenge (crash and the boys in the movie) Thunderhorse

Don't forget the various Zelda references. You can hear Young Niel playing LttP most times he's on screen. And the beginning sound effect from LttP was the beginning sound effect of the movie. Also, Gideon's symbol is a Triforce (You can see it on Ramona's chip and likely other places).
Crash and the Boys was named after "Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge" for the NES.

Since you brought up Zelda, when he's having a dream sequence by those lockers the song playing is the faerie fountain music from Zelda. Also, the idea of compiling a list is stupid. If someone didn't get something and wants to specifically ask, go for it. Otherwise, if you don't get the majority of the references then you shouldn't be seeing this movie.

There is plenty of enjoyment value outside the game references in this film. I know Usa, I'm compiling this to see what we caught. This is a gaming forum I imagine we'll get pretty close to all of them, and maybe even have a clue or 2 that isn't on a particular sites list, which would be sweet.

There's such a thing as overanalysing a movie.
Yes, Scott Pilgrim vs The World has video game references that you can get, specially if you grew during the Nintendo/Sega years. Enjoying said references and occasionally quoting them is normal and in all good fun. Sitting down and writing down EVERY SINGLE ONE in the movie section of a pop culture forum is not. Last time I checked, this thread is about the movie, not the tropes concealed in the movie.
Like Usagi said, there's a site that specializes in noting the tropes. If you really have to gush over about that, go there.
Compiling a list the way you're doing is sucking the fun out of the movie, specially for those who hasn't seen it yet. In fact, have you read the rules for the movie section?

Pointing out all the gaming references in the movie is in a way spoiling the movie. While it doesn't ruin the plot, it does ruin the enjoyment of discovering the shout outs yourself. Like Jeebus said, if you don't get any of them, you shouldn't be seeing this movie in the first place.

Yep. And of course the music that plays during the very first shot of the film--the pan down to his house--is music from the LtP title screen (when the Triforces come together.) I knew from that moment this movie would be awesome, and I was right. Also, I'm an idiot: I totally spaced on the Clash at Demonhead reference.
And yeah...making a list is stupid. TV Tropes (or wikipedia, for that matter) ftw!

I've got another one. I think the movie title Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a reference to the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video game that was released this month.

Some time ago I have become incapable of doing the former. Now when I watch something I analyze it as hard as possible as I watch it and deconstruct its aesthetic and written structure for use in my own work. I feel it's a fair tradeoff if it means I can make my school projects stand out.

Nothing wrong with that either to be honest.
One thing is to analyze a work in order to improve your own or understand how it worked for them. Another is pointing out things for the sake of sounding pretentious.

I thought this was pretty good, but not as good as Press Start.
Also, what about the YOU ARE DEAD screen? A lot of people will probably say it's a Resident Evil reference, but for some reason it reminds me more of House of the Dead.

Definitely House of the Dead. I was coerced into playing that game with my brother so often that that screen will never leave my memory.

My main thoughts on SPvTW:
Although the film was made on a much bigger budget than Press Start, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World isn't as coherent or clever an homage to video games as its indie predecessor. It's entertaining as hell while it lasts, but Edgar Wright's direction and script lack the unifying vision that someone exceedingly clever like Terry Gilliam would have brought to the project.
Although the titular Scott Pilgrim is 22 years old, the film-making effort reminds me of a lot of high school. See, in high school, when you were given an essay question that you didn't quite know how to answer, you'd just keep writing and writing until the allotted time was up, then hope that some of the stuff you wrote done would be worth credit. This seems to be an increasing trend in Hollywood, too. Richard Kelly films are the worst offender in this regard, but Scott Pilgrim falls into this pattern. It is heavy on concept and cinematography, but disappointingly light on ideas, coherency, and execution.
At the end of the day, Scott Pilgrim is just another "shut your brain off and enjoy the fights" movie. It's an angstier, nerdier version of Expendables, with even less plot. But that's not really such a bad thing, is it?
